2 Navigate Your Own Educational Experience Pastiche apps are high-end, truly interactive apps where learners decide how they want to view, navigate and interact with your learning materials. Pastiche presents your training content to learners in a number of different views: Read Me A powerful ereader that allows learners to highlight, bookmark and annotate content for later access. Within Read Me, you can also provide access to additional web resources and supplements in PDF, Word, Excel or PowerPoint formats. These are displayed within the Pastiche app through a set of specific readers to improve the learners experience. Show Me A player for audio, video and interactive media where learners watch, interact with and explore your training content. Quiz Me An advanced assessment engine where learners can test their knowledge. It provides support with feedback, hints and advice. Currently, the following question types are supported: fill in the blanks, multiple choice, multiple select, matrix, matching, drag and drop, bin drop and image map. You can now configure Pastiche to report the results back to your SCORM 1.2 compliant LMS. 3 A Flexible Model The Pastiche app is flexible and adapts to the way you organize your content. Therefore, you can build apps that provide any combination of Read Me, Show Me and Quiz Me. For example, you could have a course that only contains reading materials and assessments, in which case only Read Me and Quiz Me Help Me would be displayed. Additionally, the Pastiche app provides users with access to the list of bookmarks, highlights and notes added to the course. Tapping on one of those items brings the learner to the corresponding page. If a glossary was authored for the course, it is easily accessible for users to easily browse and display the definitions of the different terms. Future-Proofed The Pastiche app is based on a hybrid model in the sense that it provides a thin native layer that can be ported to different platforms. The content, which controls how the app behaves, is in HTML5. This allows us to very rapidly port the thin layer to different tablet platforms while still keeping the same format for the course content, as HTML5 is a key standard supported by all major tablet platforms. 4 knowledge in your LMS. This allows you to keep the tracking data and reports in a single place. Configure any content in Pastiche to report completion status and scores to a SCORMcompliant LMS. You are able to mix both tracked and untracked content in your Pastiche implementation. When content has the LMS tracking option enabled, Pastiche lets learners experience the content while they are offline. At the same time, it tracks user progress and answers to questions, all of which is persisted in the tablet. When the user finishes the course and has an Internet connection available, the learner can then submit the completion status and score to the LMS. Because Pastiche works offline, learners are free to make progress in situations where it has traditionally been difficult to get access to tracked courses like in a plane, in underground transportation, in remote areas with weak or non-available Internet connectivity, etc. Offline Performance Support Pastiche provides a very powerful search engine embedded into the app. When content is downloaded from the Pastiche Store, a full-text search index is built including all textual content from topics, procedures and media. Users have the ability to search for individual topics, procedures and media within one course or across the whole collection that they have downloaded. The results are returned as the user starts typing in the search bar and they are displayed by relevancy and grouped by course to simplify the navigation. This search feature provides a very powerful virtual suitcase for on the field workers allowing them to carry on their tablets all reference materials that they usually carry with them physically. Hosted Service Real Time Preview Controlled Content Distribution As part of the Pastiche solution, you get access to your own hosted instance of the Pastiche Store to help you distribute your courses among your learners. The Pastiche Store provides a web administration interface where you can upload courses and make them available to users of your custom-branded ipad app. In a sense, the system is very similar to the App Store: You upload your courses using a browser, and users can download them directly through the app. However, what differentiates the Pastiche Store is its ability to define who can get access to your content. There are three different access control levels to help you protect your intellectual property: Course level Define whether a course is publicly available to everybody or privately available to users that have specific permissions to download it. User level For each user, you can define which courses he or she has access to. Group level Add users into groups and then make specific courses available to each group. Your learners seamlessly access the Pastiche Storefront through the ipad or Android app. Before accessing, they have to provide their and password in order to be authenticated. The Pastiche Store will then display the courses from your catalog that the user has access to, depending on the how the three access control levels have been defined for each course. To download a course to their tablets, they just need to touch a button. The Pastiche Store also allows you to instantaneously distribute course updates to your learners. Whenever you update a course through the web administration interface, any learner that has the course installed is notified that a new version is available. 7 Built-In Security Protect Your Intellectual Property All communication, including the transfer of course packages between the Store and the tablet, is encrypted through a secured SSL channel that prevents sniffing attacks on open networks. Moreover, all course content stored on the tablet, including videos and other media files, is encrypted to ensure that all the assets packaged in the course are secure. To encrypt the data, Pastiche uses highly secure standard encryption algorithms in combination with an encryption key that is unique to each device and course. Therefore, assuming a hacker could break into the tablet and steal the course content, the content would be unreadable without the key and would not play on any other device. To further increase security, Pastiche uses a special proprietary algorithm to dynamically retrieve the key every time it needs to decrypt a piece of content, making it virtually impossible for a hacker to obtain the encryption key. Monetize Valuable Learning Content Pastiche provides two monetization models to generate new revenue opportunities. B2B The first monetization model is a B2B model based on licensing content. This is a transaction that happens outside the Pastiche platform and is intended for B2B transactions that is, selling your courses to other organizations. With this model, your client organization buys a license from you to access one or more courses. Through the Pastiche Store administration interface, you will generate a new license key, associate a set of courses to it, and define a user limit. Your client organization then distributes the license key and gives a limited number of users access to the licensed courses. When the user limit is reached, you can offer your client organization the option of buying another license or an extension of the existing license to provide the content to more users. License extensions are also managed through the Pastiche Store administration interface. On top of the user limit, you can also set start and expiry dates for the license. B2C The second model is a B2C model based on individual ecommerce transactions through the app. In this model, the transaction happens within the Pastiche platform and it is intended for end-user transactions that is, a learner buying one course from your catalog. When you upload your course to the Pastiche Store, you can define a selling price. When the learners are browsing your course catalog through the in-app Store, they can see the price of the different courses available. If a selling price is defined for a course, the learners will be asked to purchase it before the download happens. Apple s policy forces any in-app payment to go through Apple s payment gateway, and Apple charges a 30 percent commission out of the selling price for the service. The B2B and the B2C models are compatible and can be used at the same time.
