During the digitisation process text can also be extracted using Optical Character Recognition or Intelligent Character Recognition. Indexing can also be performed. Indexing is the data entry capture of unique identifying information. Preparation is an essential element to any successful document scanning project. The removal of staples, paper clips and bands is meticulously performed before scanning can proceed. On average preparation of documents can take up to two thirds of the time taken to complete a project.
