3 NUPS About the University Campuses 4 5 NUPS NUPS claims to be a unique institution in the European Higher Educational Area. The training portfolio of our University reflects on contemporary challenges of social, economic and security issues affecting the public sector. We offer programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and at doctoral level to students and also to senior and executive civil servants, military officers and law enforcement professionals, enabling them to reflect and adapt to these new challenges. Beyond educational activities NUPS also serves as a major think-tank organisation of public sphere. Enhancing knowledge transfer both at national and international level, NUPS has a wide network of partners from governmental institutions through civil society organisations to foreign higher educational institutions and international organisations. As internationalisation is the top priority of the University, there is a particular emphasis on the development of degree programmes in the field of international public service in English as well as in Hungarian language. For the first time in the winter semester of 2014/15, the University launched its new training programme, the Academy of Diplomacy Budapest Certificate Programme. Additionally, NUPS will also offer a new MA programme in International Public Service Relations. These programmes aim to provide an unrivalled educational experience for all of its foreign and Hungarian students. 4 NUPS Ludovika Ludovika 6 7 NUPS The main building of the Ludovika Campus is an architecture representing both past and future. In its current form, the building was inaugurated on the 31st of March 2014, however, it has a history of more than two centuries. The institution s role in public service dates back to 1808 when the Royal Hungarian Ludovika Academy was established. Although the academy enjoyed enormous support from the public, its construction suffered delays and the institution could only open its doors in 1872 serving as the centre for Hungarian military officer training until After World War II the facility s future was uncertain leading to serious damages in the structure of the academy building. Re-introducing the centre of public service training to the area, the Hungarian government initiated the Ludovika Project scheduled for during which time: the 150 years old Ludovika building has been renovated to its original condition; 21st century infrastructure and equipment have been installed; the surrounding green areas have been expanded and are to be supplemented with additional facilities including new sports fields, a swimming pool, a shooting range and a riding course.

7 NUPS Tandem Programme Tandem Programme NUPS There is a mentor system at NUPS that expands to all of the University s faculties. The Tandem programme is co-ordinated by the Students Union and the programmes are organised by the mentors themselves. Each incoming student receives a mentor (buddy) who will provide assistance in all kinds of matters from everyday issues to student affairs. Your buddy will contact you before your arrival and will give you information related to your stay in Hungary and will help you in finding an apartment if necessary. During your studies at NUPS the mentors will organise leisure activities for you: the programmes usually include excursions to Lake Balaton and to popular tourist sites not far from the capital. You can also ask your buddy for advice on other activities and are welcome to participate at the social events of the Students Union as well. The International Relations Office organises a welcome ceremony for incoming students each semester where international students of each faculty can get to know each other. The welcome ceremonies usually take place in mid-september and mid-february and are ideal events for meeting members of the University s administrative staff supporting international mobility. There is a wide scope of programmes and activities carried out by Erasmus buddies. Before arrival: after your nomination your buddy will contact you and answer all the questions you will possibly have; you will be added to our Erasmus Facebook group to meet other incoming students you will spend your semester with and to find your future flatmates. 8 FACULTY OF MILITARY SCIENCES AND OFFICER TRAINING Being part of NUPS, the Faculty of Military Sciences and Officer Training began its operation on the 1st of January 2012, however, it was preserving the nearly 200 years old tradition of Hungarian military officer training as the Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University. Even today the faculty s main tasks are the education and training of professional military officers along with research and development in the various fields of military science. It enjoys a wide spectrum of international relations ranging from different higher educational institutions focusing on military education and training to institutions related to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The faculty centre is located on the Hungária Campus not far from downtown Budapest. 10 FACULTY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT About Basic information FACULTY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT Law enforcement officer training at the institution dates back to 1970 when the Police College was established. Being the legal successor of the college, NUPS continues to be the sole higher educational institution in this field through the Faculty of Law Enforcement. The faculty s high-level, top quality study programmes are aimed to train future professionals, commissioned officers, public servants and public officials for posts at organizations and institutions of law enforcement. These trainings are supported by language and ICT labs and separate classrooms for special subjects. 12 FACULTY OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION About catalogue FACULTY OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION The Faculty of Public Administration has been educating professional civil servants for all levels of public administration since All students acquire general knowledge and skills related to public service but they also learn the basics of political and legal studies including the methods of legislation and law application at national and international level as well. Graduates of the faculty have had a notable career trajectory with several alumni becoming key decision-makers in the public sphere or having achieved a successful career in the private sector. For people interested in academia, the faculty offers a PhD programme which is the first one in Hungary focusing explicitly on public administration sciences. 13 FACULTY OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION Basic information Basic information FACULTY OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION Accommodation Exchange students need to arrange accommodation themselves. Erasmus buddies and the colleagues of the Faculty s international office will help incoming students in finding a flat to rent. Internet access There is free WIFI in the building of the Faculty that you can use with your Neptun account. The International Office and the IT colleagues will help you with it. There is an open computer laboratory where you can use computers freely with Internet access and you can use the computers of the library as well after a one-time registration. Sports There are numerous opportunities to do sport on the campus. There is a gym and a swimming pool that can be used for a HUF 2,500 fee that allows students to use all facilities for the whole semester. The fee has to be transfered to the given bank account and you will receive a card providing access to each facility. The coordinators of the Faculty or the Erasmus buddies will help you with the arrangements. Library International students can use the library free of charge after registering themselves. The library is equipped with computers with Internet access, students can print, copy or scan documents. Printing and photocopying are fee-based services for all students. English language documents and newspapers can also be found in the collection of the libary. 14 INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES About catalogue INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES The Institute of International Studies is the central educational and research organisation within the University with a focus on international relations and public service. It was established with the aim of concentrating NUPS human resources and capacities in the area of European and international law and security. The Institute hosts the University s first English language certificate programme welcoming students from all over the world. The onesemester long Academy of Diplomacy, Budapest programme offers a set of main subjects focusing on public service, human rights and security and can be supplemented by a course related to European or security studies. 15 USEFUL INFORMATION General information General information USEFUL INFORMATION Student ID card You can apply for an international student ID prior to your arrival to Hungary. There is a wide range of benefits, discounts and services that are available for ISIC cardholders. Learn more at: You can apply for a temporary student ID or certificate during your stay in Hungary. The faculties have different practices for issuing these documents. Please ask your faculty Erasmus cooridnator for more information. Online Learning Management System (Neptun) The courses and evaluation of students are managed in this online system. Each student has access to the system that makes it possible to select courses, apply for exams or check the schedule of the selected courses. Usually the faculty Erasmus coordinators add courses for incoming students after arrival. Examination There are several ways of evaluating the courses taken by the student. Lectures usually end with a written or oral exam. Some lecturers require home essays or research work that can replace exams. Your final grades will be registered in the Neptun system, based on which you will get your transcript of your records. Visa, registration Students from EU and EEA member states have to register themselves at the regional offices of the Office of Immigration and Nationality in case their stay will be longer than 90 days. Students from non-eu countries have to apply for student visa before their arrival. For further information please visit the website of Consular Services: Health Insurance It is highly advised to get insurance before arrival. EU citizens can apply for a European Health Insurance Card that covers a wide range of medical services in Hungary. Some of the faculties have their own doctors and special physicians to whom you can be directed to by your faculty coordinators if necessary. Touristic information websites Transcript of records You will get a transcript of records in the end of your studies. You will need this document to get your courses recognised at your home institution. You will also get a document certifying period of your stay in Hungary that can be required by your sending institution as well.
