Course content will cover the following aspects of the management of sport and event facilities: organization and management principles, policy and procedure development, ethical decision making, planning as the key to success, human resource management, management of the marketplace, financial management, risk management, programming, volunteer management, and special event planning. Site visits to various types of facilities will give students practical applications and experiential learning opportunities based on course subject matter. Course Objectives: After completing this course, students should: Gain an understanding of the management, planning, designing, and financing of facilities and facility design and construction standards. Better understand the process, necessary personnel, and administrative tasks associated with the management and maintenance of facilities. Appreciate the importance of maintaining a safe, clean, secure, and functional sport, fitness, and event facility. Be able to discuss and examine current and practical trends in facility planning, design, maintenance, and management. Course Textbook and Materials: Sawyer, T.H. (Ed.). (2009). Facility planning and design for health, physical activity, recreation, and sport (12 th ed). Champaign, IL: Sagamore. 2 COURSE INFORMATION AND POLICIES What is Expected of You: You will be responsible for all material covered in class. This is a graduate level course and you are expected to show up for class. If you will be missing a class due to a university accepted excuse, please meet with me prior to that class period. You will be permitted one excused absence from class; after which, you will be docked points for missed classes. Exams and Assignments will be derived from all notes, lectures, case studies, site visits, guest speakers and class discussions. Assignments will not be accepted late. All assignments must comply with the APA 6 th edition and proper documentation of all referenced work is required. All assignments will be submitted through Turn-it-in plagiarism software. This software checks to see if the work is original, so make sure if you cut and paste content from the web or publications that you reference this material accordingly. All correspondence (including s to the instructor) must be presented in a professional manner (e.g., proper spelling and grammar). Cellular phones, pagers, laptops, and other electronic devices must be turned off and placed in your bag or under your desk until the time that class is dismissed. Laptops may only be used if you have a university accepted excuse (i.e., letter from the Disability Resource Center). If personal circumstances arise that may interfere with your ability to meet a deadline, please let me know as soon as possible. Only University accepted excuses will be accepted and documentation must be provided. 3 PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS Game Day Write-Up Students will be asked to attend a facility (i.e., professional, intercollegiate, interscholastic, or recreational) during a sporting event and complete a write-up on the management aspects of that event and facility. Your write up should include, but not be limited to, the following: Security management Risk management, venue liability and negligence ADA compliance Crowd control (e.g., traffic flow, public announcements, restricted areas, and signage) Medical emergencies and evacuation plans Alcohol management. Please be sure to include areas in which you feel the venue could improve its operations. Your grade will be dependent upon the accuracy and completeness of information, use (and proper reference/citation) of outside resources, and grammar. Write-ups should be 5-7 pages in length. Sport Facility Trends Presentation Students will be split into groups and select a type of sport and/or event facility on which to give a 20 minute presentation, with accompanying PowerPoint slides. Presentations should focus on unique aspects of different facilities, trends with regards to these types of facilities, and the various risk and liability concerns within the facilities. Below is a list of suggested facilities. Aquatic Facilities (Indoor and Outdoor) Baseball and Football Stadiums Basketball and Hockey Arenas Campus Recreational Centers Outdoor Recreational Parks Skateparks and Winter Sports Areas Group Facility Project and Paper Students will develop a proposal to acquire support and funding for a new facility or facility renovation. Your proposals should include: Rationales for a new facility Daily operations of the facility (e.g., clientele/customers, hours of operation, etc.) Executive summary Project goals and objectives Specific program spaces needed (i.e., courts, fields, multiple purpose, aquatic, etc.) Design sketches (i.e., site and floor plans) Ancillary areas (i.e., rest rooms, lobbies, offices, locker rooms, concessions, storage, etc.) Area specifications Parking and accessibility considerations Budget (as specific as possible) and additional funding strategy Project timeline. Presentations should be 20 minutes, and will include questions. Groups will turn in a typed proposal expanding on their presentations. Group members will grade each other s contributions. 3 P a g e

4 Sport Facility Inspection Students will be broken up into groups of two-four people and visit a sport facility to conduct a facility and needs assessment. Students will present their findings via PowerPoint (with pictures and/or video) and turn in the Facility Inspection Sheet and Indoor Activity Area Planning Checklist. Both documents can be found on Sakai under the Course Materials tab. Final Questions Students will be given a set of questions from which they are to select a given number to answer. Grading of the final questions will give consideration to 1) the completeness and accuracy of their research; 2) communication, grammar and writing style; 3) creativity and use of the Internet and other outside resources; and 4) APA Style references and citations of outside resources.
