Active , Blackboard, and web accounts COURSE DESCRIPTION: Business and Technical Writing is a course in rhetoric, emphasizing communication in workplace and organizational settings. Students will write in a variety of genres, including s, memos, cover letters, resumes, proposals, and instruction manuals. Additionally, the course will emphasize visual rhetoric, as students will create tables and figures that best display technical data. Note: this is a hybrid course. We will meet once a week for two hours, and then students will be expected to work independently and online the rest of the week. ONLINE LEARNING This is a hybrid course, which means we will meet face-to-face for half of our class meetings and you will work independently online for the other half. Obviously, it is critical you have a reliable internet connection and a good grasp of how to navigate Blackboard. Hybrid writing courses possess numerous strengths, including a certain level of flexibility to work at your own pace each week, as well as the fact that more of your work will be conducted in writing. Hybrid courses also require considerable self-discipline on the student s part. As with a traditional class, plan on spending hours each week on this course; the fruits of that time will show most clearly in the writing you submit for the course. That is, I hope you will take advantage of the flexibility that online learning offers, while also staying on top of your work. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Apply rhetorical principles in order to successfully communicate within workplace and organizational contexts. Recognize and use common genres found within business and workplace contexts. Write to specific professional audiences using appropriate genres. Control written style (including tone, diction, syntax) to best communicate to professional audiences.

2 Select, synthesize, and display data in graphical forms appropriate for a particular situation. Develop a written argument that motivates an audience to take action. WORK Writing Projects and Writing Process Excluding rough drafts for peer feedback, each student will submit to the instructor roughly pages of revised, edited prose. We will follow a process approach to writing, so for each writing project, you will complete a rough draft and receive feedback in a peer review activity. After the peer review, you will revise and edit your projects before submitting them to me. For each peer review, you are expected to have a complete draft. Failure to meet the draft deadlines or to participate in peer review will lower that project s final grade by 20%. Similarly, late papers will be penalized 10% for each day the paper is late. All workshop and final drafts must be word processed in Microsoft Word, double-spaced, and use a standard 12 point font. For each writing project, you will complete a self-evaluation that discusses the project itself, including the revisions you made, the rationale for those revisions, and the strengths and weaknesses of the writing project. The self-evaluation will account for 5% of the project s grade. If you are struggling with a writing project, please contact me before the assignment is due. Writing Projects #1 and #2: Introduction and Revision Students will me a professional introduction of themselves, and then revise it for concision, following the principals explained in the textbook and in class. More details about this assignment will be provided in class. Writing Project #3: Job Cover Letter and Resume Students will identify a job to which they can realistically apply, and then they will write application materials a cover letter and a current resume - for that job. More details about this assignment will be provided in class. Writing Project #4: Internal Proposal Students will identify a problem they face in their professional lives (as a student, employee, or member of an institution, etc.), select an appropriate audience, and write an internal proposal in memo format that offers a solution (or a series of alternative solutions) to the problem. More details about this assignment will be provided in class. Writing Project #5: Instructions Manual Students will select a moderately challenging task and then write step-by-step instructions, which will use text and visuals, to explain how to complete the task. We will conduct usability tests for each set of instructions in class. More details about this assignment will be provided in class. Blackboard Discussion Forums Students will complete multiple Blackboard Discussion Forum posts as a way to apply the materials covered in class. Forum posts will usually be completed outside the classroom, taking advantage of the hybrid aspects of the course. Late Forum Posts will receive up to half credit, but only if they are submitted within one week of the due date. Style Exercises Students will complete a number of textbook exercises addressing matters of style in technical communication. Students will bring these exercises to class, submit a hard copy at the beginning of the period, and then we will work through the exercises together. Late Style Exercises will receive up to half credit, but only if they are submitted within one week of the due date. Participation and Attendance Attendance is mandatory in all class sessions. Active participation in class and online discussions is also required and will be a determiner in a student s final grade. An absence, for any reason, will result in forfeiting points for in-class student participation and exercises. These may not be made up in another class session. If an emergency arises, it is the student s responsibility to contact her instructor. SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS Style Exercises: Please bring hard copies of your completed style exercises to class. You will turn them in at the beginning of class. 2

3 Drafts of Writing Projects: Unless otherwise noted, please bring hard copies to class. We will use them for peer review sessions. Final Revised Writing Projects: Please refer to each individual assignment for submission guidelines. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING Grading: The course will use a +/- grading system, and your final grade will be calculated as follows: Assignment Points Introduction and Revision 50 Job Cover Letter and Resume 60 Proposal 70 Instructions Manual 60 Blackboard Discussion Forums 80 Style Exercises 30 Participation and Attendance 50 Total Points 400 points Percentage Grade A A B B B C C C D D D F A grade of incomplete will not be granted under any circumstances. Policies PREREQUISITES: Students are responsible for completing course prerequisites before registering for a class. Students may be removed from a course for which they have not fulfilled the prerequisite course work. For ENGL 2021, successful completion of WRIT 1122 and WRIT 1133 or their equivalent is required. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The Women s College fully endorses the University of Denver s Honor Code and the procedures put forth by the Office of Citizenship and Community Standards. Academic dishonesty including plagiarism, cheating, and falsification of data and research is in violation of the code and will result in a failing grade for the assignment or for the course. As student members of a community committed to academic integrity and honesty, it is your responsibility to become familiar with the DU Honor Code and its procedures ( I follow the Council of Writing Program Administrators definition of plagiarism, which states, In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else s language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source. 4 In order to create and maintain an optimal learning environment in the classroom, students should use technology appropriately as directed by the instructor for the purposes of the course. Work done on laptops, cell phones, and other devices that is not relevant to the class can hinder the process of communication and shared discussion of ideas that require full engagement by all participants. CELL PHONE POLICY: Please silence and put away your cell phone at the beginning of class. The first time your phone rings, beeps, hums, rattles, vibrates, texts, or whatever during class, you will bring a snack (cookies, brownies, etc.) for your classmates to the next class period. The second time your phone rings, you will treat the class to pizza during the next class. The third time: we will meet off campus at a nice restaurant and you ll pick up the tab. BLACKBOARD.DU.EDU The class will use Blackboard, an online course management system, in a number of ways. The Engl 2021 page will contain electronic copies of the syllabus and schedule as well as the major assignments, handouts, and other materials. I will also use the gradebook function. ADA ACCOMMODATIONS Students who require accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act must contact the instructor to discuss their needs. Failure to notify the instructor immediately may hinder the college s ability to accommodate accordingly. Students with learning disabilities should also contact the University Disability Services Program at University Disability Services houses the Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) and the Disability Services Program (DSP). OBSERVATION OF RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS Students wishing to observe a religious holiday not celebrated on the academic calendar may do so provided advanced written notice is given the instructor during the first two weeks of the quarter. With advanced written notice, the absence will be considered an excused absence. For additional information, contact DU s Center for Religious Services ( ). THE WRITING CENTER AT TWC The Women s College Writing Center is located in the Chambers Center. A tutor will be available two weeknight evenings and during one lunch period on the weekend. Please take your assignment sheet, rough draft, and any questions you have to the session. You ll find the schedule on the TWC s website. To make an appointment, log-on to Web Central, click on Groups, choose TWC Student Community, then Message Board. Once you choose a date, click on Request an appointment here and leave your name and time of appointment. Please cancel your appointment if you are unable to make it to your appointment. UNIVERSITY WRITING CENTER (IN ANDERSON ACADEMIC COMMONS LIBRARY) As a DU student, you are able to visit the University Writing Center to consult one-on-one with a trained staff member on any writing assignment, at any stage of the project.
