Job information Milk Crate Theatre is seeking an experienced Social Enterprise Manager who will support the growthof its Social Enterprise Pilot Project. Milk Crate Theatre has grown from a grass roots theatre project into a successful and sustainable theatre company producing its own authentic work with its own artistic, social and financial capital. A significant part of

2 the company s evolution has been its development in 2011 into a standalone company limited by guarantee; with a Board of directors, new staff structure, new artistic program, robust budget and diverse income streams. The artistic program is driven by the creative aspirations of the Milk Crate Theatre Ensemble. It harnesses the strengths of welfare and community partners to deliver a high quality, developmental approach to engaging with creative processes and performance, making Milk Crate Theatre Australia s leading arts organisation dedicated to working with the homeless community. On any given night 16,000 people are homeless in Sydney alone. Homelessness can affect anyone at anytime but is more prevalent in already marginalised communities including people who have a lived experienced of mental illness, people with disabilities, refugees, asylum seekers and Indigenous Australians. Homelessness is not just houselessness. Experiencing homelessness means not having stable, secure housing or a place to call home. It is comprised of people who are sleeping rough, couch-surfing, living with family and friends, residing at boarding houses, shelters and refuges. Milk Crate Theatre delivers three key programs; Stage Door, Main Stage and Back Stage. In addition to this, as part of these three programs Milk Crate Theatre is currently developing a Social Enterprise that delivers a range of Ensemble-led commissioned workshops and performances. The Social Enterprise Model Milk Crate Theatre aims to create rigorous debate within the wider community around issues of homelessness and/or social marginalisation. A success of the company is its history of creating awareness of these issues, creating forums for discussion and community debate whilst harnessing the shared generation of ideas to address and resolve complex social and political issues. In consultation with the Milk Crate Theatre Ensemble, staff and stakeholders, a unique and niche market social enterprise venture has been identified that continues to build on these successes Commissioned Advocacy Activities. Social enterprise organisations predominantly operate in the service economy. The trading activities of responding organisations, in descending order, was: provide services for a fee (62.7)%; retail or wholesale goods (26.0%); provide the use of capital assets for a fee (23.7%); produce goods for sale (23.2%); gain business through open tenders for government or other contracts (22.3%); provide a mechanism for producers to sell their goods (21.7%); and provide a mechanism for members to trade with each other (6.7%).1 The proposed Social Enterprise has the potential to offer a range of fee for service activities that exist as opportunities within the current company structurein the form of commissioned workshops and performances delivered within new and existing audiences and partnerships. The Ensemble Advocacy Program will be embedded across the organisation and will: 1Social Traders, Finding Australia s Social Enterprise Sector- Final Report

3 1) Be led by an economic, social, cultural, or environmental mission consistent with a public or community benefit; 2) Trade to fulfill its mission; 3) Derive a substantial portion of its income from trade; and 4) Reinvest the majority of its profit/surplus in the fulfillment of the enterprise and organisational mission. The Social Enterprise will involve Ensemble working in cooperation with the organisation and will benefit Ensemble by offering valuable skills and experience in researching, evaluating, developing and implementing a collaborative business model for the Commissioned Advocacy Activities. Outcomes of the Milk Crate Theatre Social Enterprise, for both the organisation and Ensemble, will include leadership, ownership and advocacy in welfare and the arts specific to homelessness. It will lead towards the introduction of a unique and sustainable social enterprise that will provide extended training, social leadership and high quality performance outcomes for the Ensemble. Concurrently, the Commissioned Advocacy Activities will work towards developing new audiences, increasing community awareness and ultimately influencing key decision makers. Objectives of the Social Enterprise Manager To date, a comprehensive Feasibility Study and subsequent Business Plan have been undertaken and will inform the implementation of the Pilot Project in The Social Enterprise Manager will manage and implement the Pilot Project for a period of 6 months. This will involve: Pilot Project-Working with the Artistic Director and Associate Director to develop a suite of Commissioned Advocacy Activities, strategically market and promote the Social Enterprise, develop and manage operational and financial business tools, systems and processes. The project is to compliment Milk Crate Theatre s values and be delivered in accordance with Milk Crate Theatre s policies and procedures. Reporting and Evaluation- Support the Artistic Director to report against the key outcomes of the Social Enterprise Project, including financial reporting against the project budget. Contribute to ongoing evaluation, in collaboration with the research partners, and an assessment upon completion of the pilot project for reporting and successional planning purposes. Key Priorities for the Social Enterprise Manager: Securing sustainability: Milk Crate Theatre has committed significant effort to developing the Social Enterprise Business Planfor the next 5 years. In order to realise this plan, its priorities, goals and objectives, the Social Enterprise Manager must continue to work with the Artistic Director/CEO and General Manager to secure and maintain a sustainable operating and financial basis for the Social Enterprise. A key priority for this position will be to market and sell the Commissioned Advocacy Activities whilst remaining true to the Ensemble and their employment and training experiences. Securing equitable employment and training opportunities:with a consistently changing Ensemble the Social Enterprise Manager needs to ensure that all Ensemble- existing and new members, are provided equitable opportunity to participate in the Social Enterprise by harnessing the strengths and skill base of individual members and maintaining a current skills audit.

4 Develop robust and high profile marketing campaign:the success of the Social Enterprise beyond the Pilot Project will significantly rely on strategic marketing and promotional activities across the welfare, education, government and corporate sectors. The Social Enterprise Manager must be abreast of current and targeted marketing trends across these areas. Position Duties: Business Management -Lead the overall direction of the Social Enterprise according to the company s values -Lead the Social Enterprise ensuring excellence and innovation in the delivery of the advocacy activities -Provide support to the Ensemble participating in the Social Enterprise. This includes regular meetings, ensuring thorough planning and individual development opportunities -Develop the structures, systems and activities of the Social Enterprise to ensure compliance with legislative, policy and funding obligations, including internal policies. Governance Work with the Ensemble in a flexible manner to deliver the objectives and outcomes of the Social Enterprise. Relationship and partnership initiation and management -Establish and maintain effective relationships with the Ensemble built on respect and reciprocity and advocate with and for the issues and aspirations important to them. -Develop and maintain strong relationships with key influencers and supporters across a range of sectors, including arts, welfare, education, community, government and media. -Manage relationships with key funders of the Social Enterprise -Identify, develop and secure new business and funding opportunities to support the growth and business sustainability of the Social Enterprise including government and non-government funding. -Manage and oversee research and evaluation partnerships with Sydney University- International Business Faculty and Mission Australia- Research and Social Policy Unit. -Initiate and consolidate partnerships with a view to undertake joint advocacy activities. Marketing and Communications Other key position duties -Oversee the overall brand management, marketing and communications directions and plans of the Social Enterprise, ensuring consistency with organisational values. - Work collaboratively with internal staff and stakeholders to develop advocacy resources, training kits and education packs. -Contribute to the annual business planning process and the wider thinking, planning and evaluation of the company -Work closely and supportively with all staff to ensure alignment and
