1 Integrating the Design Studio with Eclipse-based products DB2 Data Warehouse Edition (DWE) provides the essential infrastructure and comprehensive platform required for On Demand Business Intelligence. DWE combines a select set of IBM Business Intelligence (BI) products that provide you with everything that you need to deploy a next generation data warehouse. These products include the Design Studio, which is the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for DWE Data Warehouse projects. This document explains how to integrate the Design Studio features and functionality with other Eclipse-based products, such as Rational products (RDA Version 7 and RAD Version 7) and custom Eclipse based products. The terms Eclipse-based product and product refer to Eclipse-based products other than the Design Studio, including those that are custom developed. Overview of the Design Studio The Design Studio is based on the open source Eclipse platform. All of the Design Studio functionality is supplied by the Eclipse plug-ins, and supports features that enable you to: Design physical database models using reverse and forward engineering Design OLAP objects Design and deploy SQL Warehousing data flows and control flows Design and deploy, or generate code for, Data Mining flows Browse database connections Explore data The Design Studio provides the functionality in the following Eclipse plug-ins: rad rda dwe olaptools sqwtools dataminingtools Page 1 of 5

The Design Studio is in the client component of the DWE installer. The Design Studio plug-ins are installed in the <dwe_installlocation_folder>/client/ directory. The DWE license agreement is reviewed and accepted. The products with which you are integrating are based on the same version of Eclipse as the Design Studio that you run. Integration methods Important: To integrate the Design Studio with other Eclipse-based products, the Design Studio plug-ins must be added to the Eclipse-based product in this order: 1. rad 2. rda 3. dwe 4. olaptools 5. sqwtools 6. dataminingtools There are two ways that you can integrate the Design Studio with other Eclipse-based products: Use the addsite command with the Eclipse command line mode. Use the Manage Configuration option in the Eclipse GUI. Page 2 of 5

To integrate the Design Studio with Eclipse-based products using the addsite command: 1. Shut down the Eclipse-based product. (RDA Version 7, RAD Version 7, or a custom Eclipse-based product.) 2. Change to the directory where Eclipse is installed for that product: For RDA Version 7, change to the <rda_location>/eclipse/ directory For RAD Version 7, change to the <rad_location>/eclipse/ directory. For custom Eclipse-based products, change to the <custom_eclipse_location> directory. 3. Run the addsite command for each Design Studio plug-in that you want to add to the Eclipse-based product. Be sure to add only the plug-ins that the product does not include, and to add them in the required order. For example, to add the dwe plug-in, you could run the addsite command as follows: java -cp startup.jar org.eclipse.core.launcher.main -application org.eclipse.update.core.standaloneupdate -command addsite -from <dwe_installlocation_folder>/client/dwe Now you can start the Eclipse-based product and see that the Design Studio functionality is integrated with it. 4 Using the Manage Configuration option To integrate the Design Studio with Eclipse-based products using the Manage Configuration option: 1. Start the Eclipse-based product. 2. Open Eclipse for that product, and select Help > Software Updates > Manage Configuration. Figure 2 3. Click Add an Extension Location. Figure 3 Page 4 of 5

5 4. Select the directory of the plug-in that you want to add and click OK. Figure 4 5. Restart Eclipse when you are prompted to do so. 6. Repeat this procedure for all of the remaining plug-ins that you want to add. Now you can start the Eclipse-based product and see that the Design Studio functionality is integrated with it. Summary The Design Studio is based on the Eclipse platform. Accordingly, you can integrate the Design Studio functionality with other Eclipse-based products, such as Rational products and custom Eclipse based products. By adding the Design Studio plug-ins to another Eclipse-based product, you merge the Design Studio functionality with the functionality of the other product. Page 5 of 5
