Our Coop Externship allows highly qualified LLM students to earn credit by working in corporate offices, law firms, government agencies and the courts for 15 weeks.

3 Expand your education. AMERICAN LEGAL PRACTICE The LLM is a 24-credit program for individuals who hold law degrees from accredited institutions outside of the U.S. LLM students can focus on one of four specially designed LLM course tracks or work with faculty to develop an individualized plan of study suited to their own professional goals.

4 A practical approach and a personal focus. AMERICAN LEGAL PRACTICE Drexel University is an undisputed national leader in experiential education, and the law school puts hands-on learning at the center of its curriculum through externship, clinical and community-based programs. The LLM program builds on relationships the law school has established with hundreds of externship partners in the Philadelphia area that include major corporations, global law firms, a variety of government agencies and federal and state courts. Our unique LLM Co-op Externship allows students who have a strong facility in English and have demonstrated success in the classroom to work inside a corporation, a law firm, a judicial office or a government agency. Participating students spend up to two days each week gaining hands-on exposure to the practice of law, receiving one-on-one guidance from accomplished attorneys. Every LLM student works with a faculty advisor to design a curriculum unique to his or her own interests and then gets matched with a JD student partner to navigate both the law school community and Philadelphia. LLM students take part in the life of the law school, which hosts a wide variety of speakers, panels and conferences every semester. The events are often sponsored by student organizations focused on business law, intellectual property law, international law and other areas of practice. They provide an additional opportunity to learn more about U.S. law, professional practice and career strategies, while enabling students to socialize with other members of the law school community. 7 A flexible curriculum. CURRICULUM LLM students can build a personalized curriculum taking advantage of the Kline School of Law s diverse and dynamic course offerings. The law school has also designed four specialized LLM tracks for those who have a particular interest in business and commercial law, intellectual property law, international law, or U.S. bar exam preparation. This track provides students with crucial insights into American business law that will enable them to serve a broad clientele more effectively. 12 International law. BUSINESS & COMMERCIAL LAW INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW For many lawyers, it s no longer enough to understand the framework of law in their home countries. This track enables students to understand the complex matrix of international laws that will give them a competitive edge in professional practice. 14 U.S. BAR EXAM PREPARATION Selected U.S. states permit foreign-trained attorneys with an LLM to sit for their bar examinations. This track is designed to provide students both the substantive knowledge, and the minimum curricular requirements, to sit for the bar in those states. Students seeking admission in this way should check with the individual states to determine their admission requirements. Your faculty advisor will assist you in creating a plan of study that meets those requirements. Like JD students, LLM students intending to sit for a U.S. bar exam should plan to enroll in a commercial bar preparation class after obtaining their degree. 16 Legal English Drexel LEGAL ENGLISH One of the key benefits of the LLM program is that non-native English speakers build proficiency in legal English they need to succeed in professional practice. English language courses will give students a solid foundation for understanding language and terminology distinct to American law and the U.S. legal system. Students will hone these skills, as well as their conversational English, by actively participating in their standard coursework, as well as by joining the broader community of students at the Kline School of Law. Students can supplement their training by taking an introductory course the summer prior to the program or at any time during the program, through Drexel s renowned English Language Center. The introductory course will enhance students participation in classroom discussions, their understanding of written legal materials and their ability to write about legal topics clearly and accurately.

Our faculty graduated from the most widely recognized American law schools, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, New York University, Northwestern, Duke, the University of Chicago, and UCLA. Several practiced as associates and partners in major American and international law firms in New York, Washington, Chicago, Philadelphia and the Silicon Valley while others are leaders in developing new laws and policies. Most of them served in prestigious clerkships with high level federal judges. Engaging inside the classroom and accessible outside of the classroom, these professors will provide you with a rigorous introduction to principles of law as well as keen insights about professional practice.

PROFESSOR ANIL KALHAN A recognized scholar in comparative law who handled international human rights matters while practicing with Cleary Gottlieb in New York City and holds leadership posts within the Association of American Law Schools. PROFESSOR AMY LANDERS Director, Intellectual Property Law Program and former partner in the Silicon Valley office of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, a renowned international and IP firm.

20 Philadelphia is a lively metropolitan area of more than 6 million people the second-largest city on the East Coast that has been ranked #1 for culture by Travel+Leisure magazine and named one of America s hottest cities of the future by Business Insider. Because of its central location, it is within a two-hour train ride of New York City and Washington, D.C. Drexel University is located in Philadelphia s University City neighborhood, which it shares with the University of Pennsylvania. The neighborhood feels like a small college town that features 7,500 international students within 2 square kilometers, an active intellectual community, restaurants that serve diverse international cuisines, and book stores, clothing retailers and other shops.

University City is so close to downtown that students can walk to their co-op externships. Philadelphia is an affordable city that offers a huge variety of galleries, museums, performing arts venues, athletic arenas, historic sites and the nation s largest municipal park. It s easy to find Halal meats, Indian and Ethiopian delicacies, a dim sum brunch or a Brazilian churrascaria nearby, thanks to the wide range of nationalities and ethnic groups that call Philadelphia home. 22 Drexel University DREXEL UNIVERSITY Consistently ranked by U.S. News among the nation s top up and coming universities, Drexel is a comprehensive research university that includes schools of medicine, business, engineering, computing, public health, nursing and entrepreneurship, as well as law. The university takes part in NCAA Division I sports, including basketball. Founded in 1891, Drexel has long been a pioneer in experiential learning and it was among the nation s first major universities to integrate hands-on education into its curriculum. The student body features 3,000 international students from more than 100 countries, who take part in a dynamic and lively culture on campus and in the community. 23 Admission Requirements LLM students must have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in law. All applicants must submit: a personal essay expressing their interest in the program two letters of recommendation an academic transcript verified by the LSDAS or an external service TOEFL or IELTS score $50 application fee Students who do not meet admission requirements due to a lack of English language proficiency may be accepted conditionally and required to complete a language-intensive course prior to admission. Tuition, Scholarships and Financial Aid Tuition is charged per credit. The LLM is a 24-credit program. Students preparing for a bar exam may be required to complete additional credits, depending on the state. The Kline School of Law offers exceptional applicants merit and country-based scholarships.
