2 Outstanding TELACU Scholars Thousands of current and former TELACU Scholars continue to contribute to a legacy of distinguished leadership that characterizes our Scholarship Program. Here are several of their stories living testimonies of these respected leaders shared commitment to building a better future for our community. Luis Gomez MBA, UC Irvine; MS in Civil Engineering, Cal State Long Beach Class of 2005 Combined a graduate business education with engineering skills in order to serve his community at a higher level. He works as a project Manager for Lewis Operating Corporation as part of his commitment to building healthy and safe places to live and work. A dedicated TELACU Alum, Luis has invested extensive time in helping advance the Education Foundation s outreach to first-generation, minority students interested in a business profession. Alicia Fernandez PhD in Developmental Psychology, USC Class of 2004 Utilizes her multifaceted expertise as a research analyst for the Los Angeles Unified School District, helping to find positive solutions for this educational system. Also active in the classroom, Alicia teaches courses on child psychological development at Cal State LA. She continually contributes to the selection of TELACU Scholars, driven by her passion for increasing access to higher education. Jamie Zamora MPA Candidate, USC Class of 2010 BA in Political Science, San Diego State University Currently serves as an Aide to US Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez. Committed to impacting public policy in order to empower underserved communities, Jamie has gained hands-on experience working with the California State Legislature through the Senator Richard G. Polanco Fellowship. As Vice President of the Southeast LA County Young Democrats, Jaime volunteers his time to raise the public s awareness of key policy issues that impact all Americans. Fabiola Del Rio MBA, USC Class of 2005 Launched her international business career with Accenture, a leading management consulting firm. Equipped with a keen perspective on the growing Latino market, Fabiola helps Nestlé identify and import popular food products from Latin American countries. In TELACU s tradition of giving back, she also advises and mentors current Scholars pursuing careers in Corporate America. TELACU Education Foundation Scholarship Program Administered by the TELACU Education Foundation, the Scholarship Program was created in 1983 to develop and empower new generations of leaders in the communities it serves. The Program is funded by TELACU and the generous contributions of our partners colleges and universities, corporations, non-profit organizations and individuals who have joined us over the last quarter century in advancing educational opportunities for our community. The TELACU Education Foundation reserves the right to make the final selection of scholarship recipients based upon, but not limited to, the criteria described in this brochure. Eligibility Criteria Be a first-generation college student Be from a low-income family Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 Must attend one of our partnering colleges and universities (see last page) Must be enrolled full-time for the entire academic year California Applicants: Be a permanent resident of unincorporated East Los Angeles, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Huntington Park, City of Los Angeles, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pico Rivera, Pomona & the Inland Empire, Santa Ana, South Gate, or other communities selected by the TELACU Education Foundation for inclusion in the Scholarship Program Texas Applicants: Be a permanent resident of San Antonio or Austin Illinois Applicants: Be a permanent resident of Greater Chicagoland Area New York Applicants: Be a permanent resident of the state of New York Selection Criteria A select pool of applicants will be invited to interview with the Scholarship Selection Committee, which consists of representatives from our community and our corporate and educational partners. Candidates will be ranked according to their ability to demonstrate a combination of the following: Extracurricular involvement demonstrating a commitment to the community A need for financial and academic support in order to successfully complete a post-secondary program Completed applications, together with all required documents, must be postmarked no later than March 14, General Scholarship Information Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $5,000, which include any matching funds from the college or university. There are two types of scholarships: Continuing Scholarships and One-Year Scholarships. Continuing Scholarships If you will be entering college for the first time this fall, you are eligible for a scholarship that can be renewed for 4 years. To renew the scholarship for subsequent years, Scholars must: Attend all sessions of the College Advisement & Leadership Program each year Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and submit official transcripts to the Foundation for verification Inform the Foundation of any changes in address, phone number or academic standing Volunteer 20 hours of service annually to the Foundation or other community organization Plan to enroll full-time for the entire academic year
3 One-Year Scholarships If you are currently enrolled at or plan to transfer to one of our 40 partnering colleges or universities, you may apply for a one-year award if you: Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 Plan to enroll full-time for the entire academic year Agree to volunteer 20 hours of community service Meet the eligibility criteria detailed in this brochure Attend all sessions of the College Advisement & Leadership Program Note: Must re-apply to be considered for a One-Year Scholarship for the following year More Than Just Financial Support Faced with the new rigors of college life, the future leaders of our community need more than just financial support during their collegiate years. In 1992, TELACU created a retention program called the College Advisement & Leadership Program (CALP) to help ensure the success of our Scholars in attaining their educational goals. TELACU Scholars learn to successfully navigate the college experience through study skills and time management seminars, motivational talks, counseling and leadership training. Required of all TELACU Scholars entering college for the first time, CALP helps students make the transition from high school to college and, ultimately, into the workplace. Elements of CALP include: Career Preparation Financial Education Graduate School Preparation Internship Opportunities Leadership Development Mentoring Parental Involvement Additional Scholarship Opportunities The following opportunities include the College Advisement and Leadership Program. With the exception of the four TELACU Awards, these opportunities require separate applications. Citi/TELACU Scholars Program Funded through a partnership with the Citi Foundation, scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded to qualified students interested in business careers. Citi/TELACU Scholars are also matched with mentors who guide and prepare them for a variety of careers following graduation. Wachovia/TELACU Excellence in Teaching Scholarship Program Funded through a partnership with Wachovia, scholarships are awarded to qualified students pursuing a career in teaching or education. Scholars also gain classroom experience through a teacher shadowing program. TELACU Arts Award Students majoring in Fine Arts, Music, Dance, Drama or Theatre are eligible for this award. TELACU/César Chávez Leadership Award Named in honor of the great leader, this scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits outstanding leadership abilities as evidenced by both academic accomplishments and community activities. TELACU Engineering Award Students majoring in Engineering are eligible for this award. To be considered, applicants must have already completed 12 college credits/ units of engineering coursework with a minimum 3.0 GPA. TELACU Teaching Award Student pursuing a career in teaching are eligibile for this award. Graduate Programs (Each requires a different application and preliminary interview) BYU Marriott School/TELACU MBA Program TELACU s partnership with the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University enables qualified applicants to receive a scholarship to cover tuition and a small living stipend for one of the nation s finest MBA programs. David C. Lizárraga Graduate Fellowship Sponsored by Toyota, Fellowships are awarded to students who are pursuing their Masters in Business Administration or Engineering, and who demonstrate the potential and commitment to advance TELACU s mission of building self-sufficient communities through economic empowerment. Individuals pursuing advanced degrees in other fields may also be considered. Health Careers Program (Requires a different application and preliminary interview) In partnership with White Memorial Medical Center and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, the Foundation provides Rio Hondo College and Glendale Community College nursing students with a full complement of support services and resources, including scholarships of up to $10,000, book grants and living stipends. Utilizing one of the most successful approaches to community and economic development, TELACU focuses its assets on empowering the lives of individuals and families within the communities it serves. Since 1983, the TELACU Education Foundation has been advancing communities through education. Each year we provide scholarships to hundreds of Latino college students in California, Illinois, Texas and New York. We also annually provide academic programs and guidance to 2,000 elementary, middle and high school students, nursing students and veterans. 6 2009 TELACU Education Foundation Scholarship Program Application Application Submission application must include all required documents and be postmarked no later than march 14, Required Documents An application is considered complete only if it is accompanied by the following documents. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 1. Personal Narrative A written statement of at least one page addressing the following: How would you describe your dream career? Describe an event/experience in your life that inspired you to pursue this career. How are your extracurricular activities helping equip and prepare you for this career? TELACU s Mission Statement is to serve, empower, advance, and create self-sufficiency for communities. How do you believe your intended career will contribute to the fulfillment of this Mission Statement? 2. Letters of Recommendation Each applicant must submit two letters of recommendation. Letters should be on organization letterhead, be a maximum of two pages each, and address the following: Reference s relationship to applicant Length of time acquainted with applicant Applicant s strengths and weaknesses Applicant s goals Examples that elaborate on the applicant s commitment to the community 3. Official Transcripts (Recently transferred college students with 12 credits or less must also submit the prior school s transcript) 4. Copy of SAT/ACT Score Report (High school applicants only) 5.
