Please note this is a six month commitment. 3 USF students participated in the mentoring program and contributed 52 hours between January June (C)Children s Cancer Center Big Buddy Program for first year medical students: Big Buddy Flyer for Medical Students 16 MCOM students served as Big Buddies. (D) Girls on the Run of Southern Tampa Bay! Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for 3rd-5th grade girls that combines training for a 5k with an interactive curriculum to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. The 12 week curriculum addresses physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being. The 24 lessons provide the girls with tools to make positive decisions to avoid risky behaviors. 12 students participated in the program throughout the semester, as well as the 5K race on May 4 th. Program led by Dr. Rita Debate, COPH faculty member.

9 (E) Spanish speaking volunteers are invited to provide evening activities for children at Shriners Hospital! Can you speak Spanish? Then here is a great opportunity! Shriners Hospital often has Spanish-speaking patients from Latin America and is in need of a few bilingual students to provide pediatric patients with evening activities, from 6-7 pm. Approximately 3 bilingual COPH undergraduate students volunteered on two different evenings (F) USF s Reach Out & Read Pediatric Literacy Program See website at 60 premedical students (primarily undergrads) participated in the weekly ROR reading and shadowing program at the Health Park and 17 Davis clinics. Ellen Kent coordinates volunteer program. (G) The USF Health Mentoring Group This initiative is dedicated to developing best practice models with regards to mentor training, community assessment/ engagement, program evaluation, and science/wellness curriculum development. A summary of each program can be found below. General questions about the USF Health Mentoring Group can be sent to Shirley B. Smith, Director, Office of Student Diversity and Enrichment (ssmith27@health.usf.edu ). BEST Program The Brain Expansion Scholastic Training (B.E.S.T) Program works with minority students to provide academic support and health career exploration. Volunteers will lead pre-determined experiments or group discussions with a small group of students. All materials and supplies will be provided by the site coordinators. The goals of these sessions are two-fold. One is to ignite interest in science, technology and health. The second is to connect the idea that success in school equates to success in life. We also discuss the immense opportunities available to students in the healthcare field. Lastly, after the experiment/discussion you will help the students complete any homework assignments or lead them through a study session. Where: Mount Calvary Academy (3111 East Wilder Ave., 15 min from USF) and Hope Learning Center When: 3:30-5:00PM Monday and Wednesday afternoon (every other week at minimum) 4 students (1 CON, 1 COPH, 1COM and 1 premedical) served as mentors to 15 youth from Mount Calvary Academy. Boys and Girls Club USF Health partners with staff and administrators at the Wilbert Davis Boys and Girls Club in the East Tampa area to develop learning activities for youth in grades 6-12 addressing a variety of health topics. The program meets on a monthly basis on Friday afternoons. 5 regular MCOM volunteers, and 3 occasional MCOM volunteers participated in four different sessions between January through April, 2013, with group sizes ranging from youth per session. Exploring USF Health Exploring USF Health connects local high school students interested in a career in healthcare with professional students from USF Health. Volunteers serve as mentors and role models for students while leading them through a curriculum that explores a public health topic and the related professions. Volunteers earn service hours for participating and can get involved in developing or leading sessions. Additional leadership opportunities are available for volunteers who want to sustain and expand the program. Where: Morsani College of Medicine campus (group learning rooms) When: 8:30-1:00PM, one Saturday/month A total of 18 USF Health students (13 COM, 4 COM grad, 1 COPH) led 5 different Saturday morning monthly sessions between January through May, for a total of 22 high school participants. (The majority of the 22 HS students came on a regular basis) VI. Collection Drives (non-clinical volunteer opportunities) February 7 th - March 7 th : Hygiene Supplies Collection Drive. Collection boxes will be located throughout USF Health with this flyer: Hygiene Supplies Collection Drive flyer. We are collecting soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. for students who will travel on international service projects, so they can distribute the items in the countries which they visit. ~ 20 boxes of hygiene items were collected, which were distributed by students who traveled to Panama for the International Health Service Collaborative (IHSC) trip and to the Dominican Republic for the Project World Health (PWH) trip. April June. Sensational Spring Book Drive for Children! See also Book Drive Flyer. Here is a great way in which you can help your families with clutter cleanup and help kids at the same time. You can bring slightly used/almost new books for young children to any of the brightly colored book donation boxes located around USF Health. Your donated books will then be distributed to these two valuable children s literacy programs: The USF Reach Out and Read Program and the Goodwill Industries-Suncoast BookWorks Childhood Literacy Program. ~ 35 boxes of books were collected.

10 VII. Special Camps for Special People with Special Health Care Needs (non-clinical volunteer opportunities) Camp Boggy Creek is a year-round camping facility for children, ages 7-16, who have chronic or life-threatening illnesses (e.g. heart disease, HIV, sickle cell anemia, and cancer).
