1 1 CSCU Pathway Transfer A. A. Degree: Social Work Studies Addendum and Justification for Designated General Education Courses Draft October 16, 2015 The Social Work Studies Transfer Pathway provides a common pathway for students graduating with an A. A. degree from the Connecticut Community Colleges and transferring to one of the CSUs. (Charter Oak does not offer a degree in Social Work.) The Social Work Studies pathway is not a straight road. First of all, Human Services and Social Work are, in many ways, very different fields. They have different histories and different purposes. The pathway work group had to balance these two divergent histories and purposes. Secondly, the pathway has to weave together one program oriented toward a 60-credit career degrees in Human Services with another program aiming at a 120-credit degree in Social Work. Part of the challenge has been to develop a pathway that serves the needs of students (1) who know they want to transfer into a Social Work program, (2) who are uncertain whether they want an Associate's career HSE degree or a Baccalaureate Social Work degree, () who begin working on the career degree and realize they want to continue with a Social Work degree, OR (4) who complete a transfer degree but realize they need HSE certification in order to work instead of/in addition to continuing their education. The proposed pathway works well for that first category of students, those knowing they want to transfer. For the other students, good, informed advising can help students develop a program of study (particular to each community college campus) that allows the student to hold off making the degree decision until the last moment. That is, it is possible for students to select credits worth of classes that fulfill both the HSE Associate degree and TAP Pathway Social Work Studies degree. The TAP comanagers have been working with the pathway representatives from each of the community colleges to see if this is possible on their campus. Please note. In the proposed Social Work Studies Pathway, line 25 provides a working list of HSE and HSE-related courses from which a student can choose. Including these courses in the pathway ensures the HSE programs remain viable and provides students the needed flexibility enumerated above. The pathway is still waiting on contributions from some campuses. Once those have been received, they will be transferred to the corresponding lines on Templates 1 and 2. The TAP Social Work workgroup recommends that 4 specific general education courses be designated in the Framework 0. These designated courses are important to the success of our students transferring seamlessly and completing the A. A./B. A./B.S.W. degrees in a timely manner.

2 2 ENG 101 Composition: This course is a standard required course for students to complete their Written Competencies in the Framework 0 as well as possible additional general education courses. It is recommended as the Written Communications I course. MAT 165/MAT 167/MAT 168/MAT 201 Principles of Statistics: This course is required by all CSU Social Work programs and is a prerequisite for the research and methods courses. Because the Framework0 requires only one Quantitative Reasoning course, designating this competency prevents students from needing to take an additional Mathematics courses before beginning their upper-division work at the CSUs. BIO 115 Human Biology: A lab science course is required by all CSU Social Work programs. Because CCSU specifies a Biology courses, and ECSU specifies Human Biology, designating BIO 115 allows students to begin upper-division work at all CSUs. SOC 101 Principles of Sociology: This course is required in the Social Work major at CCSU, ECSU, and WCSU; it fulfills a Cognate requirement at SCSU. By designating it in the Framework, students can complete the pathway and then a baccalaureate in 120 credits.

Therefore, a Taskstream account is required for pre-major students. It is the responsibility of the student to purchase a Taskstream subscription and to have that subscription activated during any semester in which the submission of electronic evidence is required. The Taskstream subscription rate will be provided once students transfer and are accepted to CCSU. Students must attend the application and admission to the social work major orientation to meet with social work faculty. The ideal time to apply to the Program is when the applicant is enrolled in SW 227 at CCSU. For TAP Transfer Students, this should be in the first semester at CCSU. (These admissions requirements are provisional as of 1 May 2016; they should be approved and ratified during the Fall 2016 term for students applying after October 1, 2016.) 1 Community Colleges*: CCSU 2 Credits Credits Framework0** 4 General Education Requirements 5 Competency: 6 Section A 7 Written I English 101 English Written II Gen Ed Skill Area I Communication 9 Scientific Reasoning Gen Ed Study Area IV Natural Sciences 10 Scientific Knowledge BIO 115 Human Biology (ACC, CCC, GCC, HCC, MCC, MxCC, NVCC, QVCC, TRCC, TxCC) 4 BIO lab Introductory Biology 4 BIO L The Human Body with lab (NCCC)
