THE NATIONAL FOREST MONITORING SYSTEM (NFMS) BASED ON RAPIDEYE DATA Gerson Perdomo ICF
Honduras is located in the north-central part of Central America Land area: 112,090 sq km Population: 8.5 million 91 Protected Areas the world's second largest barrier reef
National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS) Committe working on that. Each institution knows its roles We are in progress to officialize NFMS

FORESTRY AND LAND COVER MAP
Forest Map Officialized by presidential mandate Used as the basis for all the planning done in the state institutions. Fire risk map Forest vocation map Ecosystems map Drought map Map of susceptibility to infestation
Current approach to forest stratification mapping Due to the severe pest attack suffered by the country s forest it has become necessary to develop a new map that includes this category if possible. (Landsat) Satellite data requirements Preprocessing satellite imagery Mosaic generation (vertical mosaics in the case of rapid eye images) Availability of images with 10 percent of cloudiness or less.
Calibration and validation Calibration to be done by the company with advanced technologies to perform that task. Validation in the case Honduras is by systematic mesh points. (high-resolution images) Obstacles to operational use Funding for product subscription, approximately four dollars per square kilometer
Ongoing access With continuous access many products that are developed separately in the country and are necessary to achieve the state s plans can be improved We need to have permanent access to the Satellite Data (Wildfires, Deforestation, Pest attack) Methods limited by a lack of automation or simplicity The use of all methods of classification can be automated but still rely on manual editing in a highly efficient program. Needs a lot of field experience to take reality as well as possible.
IT/infrastructure needs Geographic Information System in the ICF with reduced working space. Server and an internet connection independent to the state network. A technical programmer to achieve better process automation R&D requirements More qualified personnel is necessary to perform these tasks and achieve better product generation. The deadlines for the research process are not defined (REDD)
