2 Thomas College Dual Enrollment Program The Thomas College Dual Enrollment program offers a unique opportunity for high school students to gain early access to college courses at no cost to the students or their high schools. The program allows high schools to offer students a variety of college-level courses available through Thomas. In the program, students will gain valuable academic experience and, after completion, earn college credits that they can apply to any major at Thomas or at any college that honors Thomas transfer credits. Using the guidelines in this handbook, high schools will identify a course and work with the college to recommend students and qualified instructors for approval by the college. Throughout the course, instructors are encouraged to collaborate with the faculty at Thomas to ensure they have the tools, resources, and information needed to succeed. Program Benefits Some of the Dual Enrollment benefits include: Convenient and efficient way to provide early college access for high school students No costs for the high schools or students Instructors and students have access to Thomas College resources Instructors gain experience teaching a college course Students earn college credit High Schools are provided with one voucher for a single free graduate course for each semester that an institution particpates in the Dual Enrollment program 2

3 Thomas College Dual Enrollment Student Selection Guidelines The following guidelines are provided to assist high schools in the selection of students to recommend for paricpation in the Thomas College Dual Enrollment program. 5 Required Student Paperwork Students must complete a Dual Enrollment Application (see forms section). This application must be submitted to Brittany Newman (newmanb@thomas.edu). This form must include: Name Date of Birth Social Security Number Race (unknown is an option for those unwilling to disclose) Thomas College is required by law to report students to federal agencies. If the above information is not accurate, or is not complete, it may impact the student s ability to receive college credit. If, for some reason, a student can not disclose any piece of this information, please contact Brittany Newman directly. 5 5

6 Required Instructor Paperwork For your employee file: Transcript of highest degree Resume Signed Acceptable Use Policy (enclosed) SSN Required for your class: Copy of final syllabus sent to Thomas (Brittany Newman) Class Roster Other Obligations Some of the Dual Enrollment requirements include: Dual Enrollment Instructors must log in to the Faculty Information System (FIS) at least one time per month in order to check course roster for accuracy. When a student drops your course, make sure the change reflects on your course roster in the FIS. If a student drops the course for any reason, please communicate this to Brittany within one week of drop. Please, provide the date in which the student dropped, and the reason for which they dropped the course. Check their Thomas College addresses regularly for announcements. 6 6

11 Memorandum of Understanding between Thomas College and High School Dual Enrollment Program Thomas College and provide educational opportunities for High School agree to enter into an agreement to High School students. Students accepted into the program by the College with the advice and recommendation of the school will be eligible to participate in a program which allows for the accumulation of credits at a college level. Instructors will be selected and approved by the College. The instructor will remain an employee of the High School. At no time will any such instructor be considered to have any form of employment relationship with Thomas College. Any instructor selected by the College will adhere to Thomas College academic policies with respect to the delivery and award of college credits. The instructor will provide Thomas College with a syllabus that meets Thomas College standards as outlines in the Faculty Handbook. Any such syllabus will meet the requirements of the appropriate academic department within Thomas College. The instructor shall provide Thomas College with a resume and an official transcript of the highest degree earned for review by the appropriate Department Chair and Provost. 11

12 The instructor will cooperate with the appropriate department chair and/or academic affairs department of Thomas College with respect to the resolution of any academic or student issues as outlined in the Faculty Handbook and College Catalog. Thomas College will provide one voucher to be used for one graduate course per semester for which the dual enrollment plan is offered. The High School may determine which High School employee will be the recipient of the voucher. Thomas College will provide the High School with any necessary instructional support to facilitate the administration of this program. This agreement will be reviewed and confirmed annually on or before August 15 by both the High School and the College. In the unlikely event that a dual enrollment agreement between a High School and the College must be terminated prior to the end of a term when students from the High School are enrolled in a course, the College assumes the responsibility for completing the delivery of the course for the students who are enrolled at the time such termination becomes effective. 15 IT Services Acceptable Use Policy As a member of the Thomas College community, I realize that the computer resources are available to me to pursue academic requirements. This includes course work and research. I realize these resources are made available to me provided I do not violate the College s policy regarding the ethical and academic use of these resources. The College has provided me with access to the THOMAS COLLEGE IT ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY. This policy may be revised by the Academic Computing Committee as necessary. This committee is comprised of Thomas College faculty, staff, and students. I will be responsible for periodically reviewing the policy. 17 Faculty Information System The Faculty Information System (FIS) provides instructors with access to administrative tools that manage their courses. The Faculty Information System allows faculty to: Access course schedules and directories Place and track book orders Access advising and registration tools Enter warnings, grades and absences Access Moodle Review Faculty Senate & Academic Affairs information your entire class Access student information To Access FIS: Access the Thomas College Homepage ( Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on the link entitled Information for: Students_ Faculty-Staff Select Intranet from the list of web links. Under the heading Faculty, Staff, and Trustees, select the link entitled Faculty Information. Page (FIS). 18 Instructions for Entering Grades Online The first step to enter grades is to login to the Faculty Information Systems (FIS) page on the Thomas College Intranet: When asked for username type THOMAS\yourusername and then enter the password. If that doesn t work try yourusername@thomas.edu instead of THOMAS\yourusername. If that doesn t work, use the remote desktop link: If you experience technical problems logging into the Intranet, please contact I.T. Services at or servicedesk@thomas.edu. Once logged into the Intranet, on the bottom left of the page you will see a heading entitled Grades and Evaluations. Choose #1 [Enter Grades]. Enter your course number, term, year and select find classes For each student on the class list, use the drop down box to select the final grade. Faculty cannot enter a grade of Incomplete. If you wish to assign a grade of Incomplete, leave the space for the grade blank and submit a completed and signed Incomplete Request Form to the Registrar. Upon receipt of the form, the Registrar will enter the grade of Incomplete in the system and the student will receive a copy of the form. Incomplete Request Forms are available on the Faculty Information Systems page. Refer to number 2 in the Grades and Evaluations section. Policy of Issuing a grade of Incomplete An Incomplete normally applies to work of acceptable quality in a course when the full requirements have not been met due to illness or other unusual or extenuating circumstances. The grade of Incomplete should not be assigned unless there is a specific agreement reached between the faculty member and the student regarding the remaining work for the course. Grades of Incomplete automatically revert to a failing grade 45 days after the end of the semester. Once submitted, grades can only be changed by the Registrar. Once you have verified the grades click on the Submit icon. A screen is displayed notifying you that grades have been saved. Have questions about entering grades?
