2 Dear Friend, An unprecedented number of families in our community have learned the value of having access to services from a local, nonprofit healthcare system. In the past year, Community Mercy Health Partners provided more than $27 million in community benefit, including uncompensated care. Often the result is sicker people who incur much higher emergency or inpatient costs. Area families, many of them facing tough economic challenges, have called on us more than ever to bridge the gap to healthcare services. The community relies on us for a comprehensive range of services. We are meeting those needs, not only through our hospitals -- Springfield Regional Medical Center and Mercy Memorial Hospital -- but also through Senior Health and Housing, Specialty Care Centers, Diagnostic Services, Home Health Care and others. We have also expanded our care network through a growing number of primary care physicians and specialists through Springfield Regional Medical Group. Community Mercy Health Partners strives to meet the health needs of all people, especially the poor and underserved in Clark and Champaign counties and surrounding communities. That s our mission. And it s our passion. We are proud of the strides we have made in meeting the needs of our community. In this Community Benefit Report, you can learn more about specific ways that we ve been entrusted to help others through these services and our many outreach programs. 3 Introduction Community Mercy Health Partners (CMHP) is committed to delivering exceptional care with compassion as it seeks to meet the healthcare needs of all people, especially the poor and underserved. In addition, CMHP ensures that its policies integrate and reflect the public interest in order to meet its responsibilities as a not-for-profit organization. Community Benefits are programs or activities that respond to identified community needs and meet at least one of these objectives: Improve access to healthcare services. Enhance the health of the community. Advance medical or healthcare knowledge. Relieve or reduce the burden of government or other community/charitable efforts. Value Summary During 2012, CMHP provided $27,287,214 in Community Benefits in a number of categories. This represents 10.36% of the region s total operating expenses. Financial Contributions: $102,788 Community Health Improvement: $261,093 Subsidized Health Services: $2,280,004 Health Professionals Education: $217,165 Community Health Improvement Community Health Improvement includes services that extend beyond patient care, such as education, spiritual and emotional support, and health screenings. These activities do not generate patient care bills, although they may involve a nominal fee. Programs and events in this category include: Community Mercy Med Assist This program helps area residents who cannot afford their prescription medications. Clients can apply and obtain vouchers, which can then be redeemed at one of 20 local participating pharmacies. In addition, our Med Assist staff coordinates with over 80 area physicians to assist patients in receiving free medications from pharmaceutical companies. Challenge in 2012 to manage the need with decreased funding Med Assist was able to provide over 2.6 million in prescription assistance serving 1,997 clients. Camp Phoenix Camp Phoenix is an annual event organized by Community Mercy Hospice for area children who are experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one. The camp provides healthy interaction in a fun, safe environment that combines recreational activities with support groups. By interacting with peers who share similar grief experiences, participants recognize they are not alone in the grieving process and learn skills to cope with their loss. This one-day event is provided free of charge to children and teens between ages Seventy children and teens attended the seventh annual Camp Phoenix on June 8, A Spirited Revival Signs of the renaissance of civic pride are springing up all over Springfield, Ohio. City boosters even opened a retail store offering city-themed apparel and local artisans work. This is a community on the move, and perhaps nothing says that better than the impressive sight of the new state-of-the-art Springfield Regional Medical Center (SRMC) welcoming visitors to the heart of downtown. Unpaid Cost of Medicaid: $16,062,445 Charity Care: $8,363,719 The medical center makes a lovely gateway to our community, says Jeanne Lampe, a third-generation business owner and fourth-generation resident. More important, Jeanne says, Community Mercy Health Partners (CMHP) investment in the downtown site nearly $230 million set a new standard for confidence in Springfield s future. 2 Community Mercy Health Partners 2012 Community Benefit Report 3

4 Building downtown demonstrated their belief in our community. Now when locals talk about new ventures, they re thinking about downtown Springfield first. A 2012 study by the University of Cincinnati s Economics Center calls the medical center a cornerstone for the city s revitalization and transformation. The report documents more than $800 million in economic impact from the construction, 2012 Jeanne Lampe operations and thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in wages. At least 67 local businesses benefited from over $22 million in construction contracts, and the city obtained over $18 million in government grants and loans to upgrade infrastructure. The building project and operations make the medical center one of the region s largest economic engines. It contributes more than $2 million annually in earnings taxes and six-figure property tax income to the city. It also supports more than 1,000 local jobs in industries supplying the medical center. Jeanne says fellow employers have noticed SRMC s impact on their ability to compete for the best employees. The first thing job candidates look at is the school system. The second is healthcare. Our new medical center and the revitalization it has sparked give us the opportunity to attract people who are now living in other communities. Still, there s another aspect she wishes got more attention. We are so fortunate to have this hospital that provides the same high quality care to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. It s staggering to know SRMC subsidizes $26 million in care and services to this community annually. That truly speaks to the heart of SRMC and its commitment to all of us in Springfield. We take care of our own. Subsidized Health Services CMHP sponsors several programs that respond to specific needs within the community, even though these services generate low or negative profit margins. Community Mercy REACH The REACH program, (Recovery Education Advocacy Caring Hope), provides confidential outpatient alcohol, drug and tobacco treatment programs to residents of Clark, Champaign, and surrounding counties. Adolescents and adult programs are offered at different levels of intensity including intervention programs for adolescents to intensified treatment for both adolescents and adults. Available at no cost to local schools is a Teen Intervention Educational presentation focusing on the dangers and consequences of alcohol, drug and tobacco use. All programs are provided by licensed chemical dependency therapists, or certified tobacco specialists. REACH offers a Smoking Cessation program quarterly and programs are available on site for local companies and agencies. The Smoking Cessation program includes education, nutrition, skills to eliminate tobacco use to promote an overall healthy lifestyle. In addition, REACH provides Drug Free Safety Programs (DFSP) classes on site or at REACH to local employers participating in the Bureau of Workers Compensation Program (BWC). 5 Mercy Well Child Pediatrics Mercy Well Child Pediatrics- As a community-based medical home, Mercy Well Child Pediatrics (MWCP) identifies and addresses potential health and development concerns in children under 21 years of age. Promoting quality pediatric care with a holistic approach to meet the health, social, and emotional needs of children and their families, MWCP offers well and acute care services, including childhood immunizations. The dedicated staffs including the pediatrician, nurse practitioners, nurses, social worker, behavioral therapist, and support staff nurture, educate, and support the child and entire family unit throughout the many phases of development in close collaboration with referrals, as needed. As part of the CMHP regional care network, Mercy Well Child Pediatrics new location has provided Champaign County a larger, stand-alone facility enabling MWCP to apply for Rural Health Center (RHC) designation. Rural Health Center designation will enhance reimbursement enabling the center to provide additional services to county residents. Patient Transportation Program CMHP provides transportation for hospital patients who are ready to be discharged but do not have a car or other means for securing a ride home. Through collaboration with the Clark County Rides Plus Program, CMHP was able to support need for transportation which increased over 40% from the previous year. Charity Care Charity care is defined as free or discounted health services provided to persons who cannot afford to pay and who meet the criteria for financial assistance. Continuing the legacy of our founders and religious sponsors, CMHP provides care to all who need it, regardless of their insurance status or income level. Unpaid Cost of Medicaid Under certain public programs such as Medicaid, the costs of treatment are often greater than the payments received. This economic loss is absorbed by CMHP and totaled over $16 million in Health Professionals Education The goal of a hospital based nursing education program is to enable students to acquire the competencies required to effectively apply the nursing process at the beginning level of practice. Clark State Community College offers a two-year program with emphasis on clinical experience. Graduates of this program are prepared for the Registered Nursing Licensing Examination and can obtain an associate of Arts in Health Science degree by completing a residency with Urbana University. SRSN prepares entry-level practitioners to provide service in a variety of settings. The goal of this hospital-based nursing education program is to enable students to acquire the competencies required to effectively apply the nursing process at the beginning level of practice. SRSN, which transitions to Clark State Community College in the school year, offers a two-year program with emphasis on clinical experience. Graduates of this program are prepared for the Registered Nursing Licensing Examination and can obtain an Associate of Arts in Health Science degree by completing a residency with Urbana University. 6 Community Mercy Health Partners 2012 Community Benefit Report 7

6 Other Programs... Migrant Health Outreach For over 20 years, CMHP has sponsored annual health fairs to provide free screenings, lab tests and health education for area migrant workers and their families. For the past 3 years a collaboration with Community Mercy Med Assist, the New Carlisle Community Clinic and Clark County Combined Health District have provided a mobile clinic to area migrant workers and their families for basic healthcare services, follow-up care and education. Support Groups and Education CMHP offers a number of support groups and seminars to encourage community involvement and promote healthy lifestyles. Most of these are free, open to the public, and target specific conditions or topics, such as: Alzheimer s Support Group Cancer Caring Friends Support Group Look Good, Feel Better for women Pink Ribbon Society breast cancer Diabetes Support Group Several diabetes classes are also available, with enrollment fees Hospice / Grief Support Coffee and Conversation Hour Adult Grief Support Groups (6-week sessions) Children s Grief Support (throughout the school year) Camp Phoenix Day Camp Heart Disease ICD Support Group Mended Hearts Support Group Free Heart Check Center (kiosk at the Upper Valley Mall) Stroke Club Support Group Weight Loss Surgery Support Group About Community Mercy Health Partners Our Vision A comprehensive, integrated regional healthcare system, renowned for our quality, innovation, compassionate service, and culture.
