3 ENGLISH Introduction Welcome to the MAX-306M1 Series. This is a WiMAX subscriber station system comprised of an outdoor unit (ODU) and an indoor unit (IDU). The ODU features a high gain antenna, advanced IP networking, and embedded Voice over IP integration, to name a few, while the IDU provides power to it. It also provides connectivity to the devices in your home or office at the same time. How It Works The ODU connects to the WiMAX network while the IDU is the management point between the WiMAX network (via the ODU) and your computer/local area network. The IDU can also function as an analog-to- VoIP telephone adapter. Firmware Caution: When your ISP upgrades your device s firmware, all of the LEDS will flash simultaneously. Do not turn off or unplug the device until they stop blinking. 3

4 Before You Begin Ensure that you have everything required to properly set up your device. 5 ENGLISH Installing the Outdoor Unit Before you begin, ensure that you are familiar with all safety and accident prevention procedures necessary for working at heights and with electricity. Do NOT install the ODU during a lightning storm. Choose a Location The ODU can be mounted on a pole or antenna mast or on a wall using the supplied bracket mount. Choose a mounting point that is sturdy enough to hold the ODU, even during high winds. When choosing a location to install the ODU, remember that the ODU s front panel should point towards your service provider s nearest base station. If you are not sure where this is, consult your service provider. You do not need to be able to see the base station from the ODU s position; there may be objects such as trees and buildings in the way without signal loss. However, if you experience difficulties with signal reception, a Line of Sight (LoS) connection may produce better results. It is suggested that you transport the ODU to its intended installation location in its original protective packaging. 5

6 Lay the PoE Cable Remove the included Power over Ethernet (PoE) cable from its packaging and lay it from your intended IDU location to your intended ODU location. The RJ-45 Ethernet connector should be at the indoor end, and the eight-pin DIN connector should be at the outdoor end. The supplied cable is designed to minimize signal loss. If you use cable extenders to cover a greater distance, signal attenuation may result. Depending on purchase location and model, you may have one of the following cables: 30m, 60m, or 100m. If you intend to use cable ties or other methods to secure the cable, do not tighten them yet. Leave the cable loose until you have finished installing the IDU and ODU. Mount the ODU See the installation instructions that came with your bracket mount for information on mounting the ODU correctly. To avoid the danger of rainwater entering the device, install the ODU with the base facing downwards. Note that the mounting process has three parts, as follows. 1. Connect the base bracket to the ODU. 2. Connect the wall/pole bracket to the mount location (using the clamping bracket if mounting on a pole or mast). 3. Connect the base bracket to the wall/pole bracket. Wall-mounting hardware (masonry bolts, plugs, etc.) may not be included with the bracket mount. 6

7 ENGLISH Setting Up Your Modem This section shows you how to set up your WiMAX Modem. You will need a valid WiMAX account to connect to the Internet. You will also need a valid SIP-based voice account to use a VoIP phone with this product. For more information, contact your service provider Connect the AC Power Cord. The Power LED shines a steady green once the device is turned on. 2. Connect the RJ-11 telephone line. 3. Connect the RJ-45 Ethernet cable. 4. Connect the PoE cable. The other end should already be connected to the ODU, as described in the previous section. 7

8 Connecting to the Internet This section shows you how to connect to the Internet with your device. 1. Open a web browser. If your service provider s WiMAX login page appears instead of your default Home page then all you need to do is enter the login information that you were given and follow the on-screen instructions. The WiMAX Modem should then automatically update itself with the settings that you need to connect to the Internet. If your service provider s WiMAX login page does not appear, then you may need to use the ZyXEL Connection Wizard (see page 9). 8

9 ENGLISH ZyXEL Connection Wizard This section shows you how to manually configure the WiMAX Modem. 1. Open a web browser and enter in the address bar. 2. Enter the default User Name (admin) and Password (1234), and then click Login. 3. Enter a new password when prompted, then click Apply to continue. This does not affect your WiMAX or voice account login. This only affects your WiMAX Modem web configurator login. 9

10 4. Click Go to Wizard Setup when prompted to select a mode. 5. Select Internet Connection Wizard. 10

11 ENGLISH 6. Enter a System Name and/or a Domain Name with the information provided to you by your service provider, then click Next. If no information was provided, simply click Next to continue. 7. Enter the Authentication Settings that were provided by your service provider, then click Next. 11

12 8. Choose a method for setting your computer s IP address. If your service provider assigns an IP address dynamically, select the Get automatically from your ISP option. If your service provider assigns a static IP addresses, select the Use fixed IP address provided by your ISP option and, when prompted, enter your fixed IP, subnet mask, and DNS information. Click Next to continue. 9. In the Setup Complete screen, click Close. Configuring VoIP Settings This section shows you how to configure the WiMAX Modem s Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) settings. Set up your Internet connection before configuring your VoIP settings. See Connecting to the Internet on page 8 for more information. 12

13 ENGLISH 1. Log into the web configurator, as described in steps 1-4 of the ZyXEL Connection Wizard section (beginning on 9). Click Go to Wizard Setup when prompted to select a mode. 2. Select VoIP Setup. 3. Enter the SIP (VoIP) server information provided by your voice account provider, then click Apply to continue. 4. In the VoIP Configuration screen, click Close. 13

14 Troubleshooting Use this section if you have problems with your WiMAX Modem. I cannot place a VoIP call: Check the telephone line connection between the WiMAX Modem and your VoIP or SIP phone and ensure that both ends are secure. Log into the WiMAX Modem s web configurator, click the VOICE icon and check your Service Configuration status. Re-enter the settings given to you by your voice account service provider if they are not correct. If the problem persists, there may be something wrong with the SIP server. Contact your voice account service provider for assistance. I cannot access the WiMAX Modem from my LAN: Check the cable connection between the WiMAX Modem and your computer or switch and ensure that both ends are secure. Ping the WiMAX Modem from a LAN computer: Click Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. When the command prompt window opens, type "ping without quotes and press [ENTER]. The WiMAX Modem should reply. I cannot log into the web configurator: Check to see if anyone else is currently logged into the WiMAX Modem. If so, you may not be able to log in until they log out first. 14
