12:30 p.m. Workshops What s New in Contraception, Evelyn Kieltyka This presentation will provide participants with an update on methods of contraception currently available in the United States with an emphasis on recent changes in use and prescription of existing methods, as well as information regarding newly available methods. Some of the methods covered include IUDs, subdermal implants, new pills and emergency contraception. Discussion will include use of long-acting reversible contraception in adolescents as well as online lesson plans about pregnancy prevention and teen-friendly health resources. Evelyn Kieltyka, MSN, MS, FNP-BC is Senior Vice President of Program Services at Maine Family Planning. She has held this position since 1992 and is responsible for Title X grants management and monitoring of clinical grants across the state. Evelyn received her nursing degree from Sacred Heart University and holds Master s degrees from Simmons College and the Harvard School of Public Health. She is board certified as an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner and a Family Nurse Practitioner. Adolescent Brain Development & Risk Reduction, Sheila Nelson Ever wonder why young people take seemingly incomprehensible risks? The science of adolescent brain development is telling us more and more about why adolescents engage in risky behavior and the reasons aren t as bewildering as we adults may think. Come learn the science behind teen risk-taking, and some brain-friendly strategies for helping young people stay safe and healthy (if not entirely risk-free). Sheila Nelson is the Director of the Adolescent Health and Injury and Suicide Prevention Program at the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Ms. Nelson began her career as a youth outreach worker and youth group facilitator. Since then, she has worked to provide education and access to care for young people, and coordinated programs focusing on promoting sexual health, substance-use prevention, suicide prevention, and positive youth development. Ms. Nelson currently oversees adolescent health and injury and suicide prevention activities at the Maine CDC in Augusta. Sexuality Education for Youth with Developmental Disabilities, Katherine McLaughlin When it comes to talking about sexuality, youth with disabilities are often excluded, almost as if they are incapable of having sexual thoughts, feelings and needs. In reality, they too are sexual beings who need information and skills for making healthy decisions about sexuality. Though professionals who work with youth with developmental disabilities know that sexuality issues need to be addressed, they don't necessarily feel comfortable or competent enough to do so. This training offers a nuts-and-bolts approach to discussing sexuality and responding to behaviors that will help professionals feel more comfortable and confident dealing with this sensitive topic. Katherine McLaughlin, an expert on sexuality and developmental disabilities, has taught sexuality education to people with developmental disabilities as well as trained them to be peer sexuality educators themselves. She has trained nationally at conferences and 2
workshops, has developed and led parent workshops on Talking to Your Kids with Disabilities about Sexuality, and has trained staff on how to address sexuality with people with disabilities. Katherine has co-authored two curricula for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England: Sexuality Education for Adults with Developmental Disabilities and Sexual Violence in Teenage Lives. Katherine worked as a sexuality educator and trainer for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England for over 20 years. She now leads workshops as a private consultant and also teaches Human Sexuality at Keene State College in New Hampshire. Working with LGBTQ Youth, Penny Sargent In this workshop we ll talk about some LGBTQ basics, including terminology, and differences between sexual and gender identity. We ll discuss how increasing our own knowledge helps us work collaboratively with youth to increase safety in schools and the community. Penny Sargent is a Disease Intervention Specialist for the Maine CDC and part-time program coordinator of Outright Lewiston-Auburn. She has worked with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth since Her work with Outright includes supporting local school-based groups such as Gay/ Straight/ Trans Alliances, providing resources and support for youth and adults concerning LGBTQ issues, and providing educational outreach to schools, programs and community groups. Some of her other Outright work includes events such as the annual drag show fundraiser, the very popular Gender Bender dances, and the annual Maine Youth Summit. In addition, Penny has 15 years experience with HIV and sexual health education. Behind the Scenes- A Look at the Best Practices in STD/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention Curriculum, Lynette Johnson & Jean Zimmerman Join us to learn about the newly revised Best Practices in STD/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention curriculum the why and the how as well as a look at the final product. In the revised Best Practices, the Maine DOE and Maine Family Planning applied evidence-based practices, aligned the content with the Maine Learning Results and the National Sexuality Education Standards, incorporated technology, added more interactive activities, and included topics on healthy relationships, the developing brain and sexual and reproductive anatomy. In this workshop, participants will learn how to use the curriculum and see a snap-shot of the lessons and activities. Participants will also learn how to access the curriculum and many additional resources from the Best Practices educator webpage, including ways to assess student learning; and how Maine Family Planning s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program can assist educators in implementing the curriculum and can be a resource for your sexual health education program. Lynette Johnson has worked with Maine Family Planning since As Director of Prevention Programs, she advocates for and trains educators from schools and community organizations across the state in implementing evidence-based programs to prevent teen pregnancy, HIV and other STIs. Lynette began her family planning career overseas, working with the Indonesian Family Planning program and has a Master s degree in International Development from American University. Jean Zimmerman is a former health teacher at Bonny Eagle High School, and currently works as a Health Education and Physical Education Consultant at the Maine Department of Education. She was also the Maine DOE HIV Prevention Education Coordinator for seven years and has been involved with the last three revisions of the Best Practices 3
curriculum, including collaborating with Maine Family Planning on the latest major revision. 2:00 p.m. Workshops Sex & Gender, Gia Drew This training is designed for people with all levels of experience working with transgender and gender non- conforming people. This interactive and situational program focuses on both understanding the differences between gender, sex, and sexual orientation, and also best practices for becoming a stronger ally to the transgender/gender non-conforming community. In addition to examining one's own gender, which will include reflecting on stereotypes and biases, participants will begin to learn what it is like to walk in a transgender or gender non- conforming person's shoes. There is open discussion about when and how to speak up in situations that may happen in day-to-day life, and how to put into action your skills as an ally to the transgender/gender non-conforming community. There will be online resources provided regarding this topic. Gia Drew is Program Coordinator at EqualityMaine. At EqualityMaine, Gia works to improve the lives of transgender Mainers, oversees youth programing, which includes leading a statewide coalition to support LGBTQ youth, provides community outreach and education, and serves as an LGBTQ liaison to the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She also serves as President of the Board of Directors Maine Transgender Network, a statewide non- profit that provides support for the transgender community. She regularly speaks about Gender and Sexual Diversity and Transgender Issues both locally and nationally. Before becoming a professional LGBT advocate, Gia was a high school teacher and coach for nearly twenty years. In that time she became one of Maine's first OUT transgender public school teachers and one of America's first transgender high school coaches. Intimacy Building Techniques for Students - Dana Fadel & Kellie Ryan A strong component of a healthy relationship is intimacy, but educators are often challenged by how to teach intimacy in a classroom setting. It is important to understand our own sense of intimacy in order to be effective educators. In this workshop, participants will participate in activities such as eye-gazing, in order to re-examine their own definitions of intimacy and how it may affect their work with teens. We will discuss the impact of being a role model for students as we practice communication techniques that will enable us to tackle tough topics with ease, comfort, and clarity. This workshop will include classroom activities for students to safely experience how to include intimacy in their own relationships. Dana Fadel is a certified sex educator through Planned Parenthood, and is the Health Coordinator at Wayfinder Schools in New Gloucester, Maine. She co-facilitates a women s sexuality workshop series, Sex of Self, with co-collaborator Kellie Ryan. She wrote a sex and relationship advice columnist for the Portland Phoenix, and regularly does trainings on assertive communication. Dana s strength is helping raise sexual consciousness, self-acceptance, and navigate choices that are right for each individual. Kellie Ryan is a Massage Therapist and Sex Educator for the Institute of Sexual Education and Enlightenment in North Hampton, Massachusetts where she primarily teaches classes on body awareness, movement and intimacy building as well as Sexual 4
Attitudes Reassessment. She lives in Portland, Maine, and along with co-facilitating Sex of Self, a women s sexuality series with Dana Fadel, she is also building a new body focused practice where she supports people around sexual issues. Cyber Abuse & Harassment, Maye Emlein & Julia Teitel This workshop will offer middle and high school health educators age-appropriate strategies, ideas and resources on the topic of cyber-harassment and cyber-abuse. Participants will gain tools to help their students navigate the technology terrain and aim for digital citizenship. Facilitators will offer participants language, tools, and best practices to help students increase their knowledge and understanding of cyber-harassment, dating violence, sexting/revenge porn, respectful communication, and basic bystander intervention. These tools will assist youth in the prevention of cyber-sexual harassment and abuse and help them understand how to support those they know who have been affected. Maye Emlein is the Education Program Manager at Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM) and holds a BA in anthropology from Wheaton College. As Program Manager, Maye supervises three educators and leads the development of SARSSM s Prevention Program that reaches over 8,500 students annually. Prior to her work as Program Manager, Maye worked as the Education Coordinator as SARSSM, where she developed and facilitated a wide range of sexual violence prevention programming, presenting to a wide range of audiences. Maye s interest in violence prevention stems from her years at Wheaton College where she worked to raise awareness about issues of violence on college campuses and implement a campus-wide bystander intervention project. Julia Teitel is the Androscoggin County Community Educator and Youth Advocate at Safe Voices. She regularly gives workshops and presentations for students from Pre-K through college on topics such as healthy relationships, recognizing gender stereotypes, and personal advocacy. She also leads trainings and seminars on domestic violence for community groups, including health professionals, law enforcement, and service organizations. Julia s great passion is working with at-risk, homeless, and LGBTQ youth on a one-on-one or small group basis, and she has a leading role in Safe Voices human trafficking prevention and awareness efforts. She holds degrees from Guilford College and the University of Rochester. STD Prevention, Jody Pierce Glover & Emer S. Smith Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) can be a complex topic to discuss with teens. As a gateway to comprehensive sexual health information, youth educators and health professionals need to communicate accurate information to help students make informed decisions about their health. The workshop will feature a lesson plan to demonstrate the principles of how STDs are contracted ( Routes of Transmission ), and a basic discussion of common STDs. Participants will be able to incorporate information learned in this workshop to enhance health education content areas of Healthy Behaviors and Personal Health (A1), Diseases and Other Health Problems (A3) Healthy Practices and Behaviors (C1), and Locating Health Resources (B2) to enhance Maine Learning Results health education content areas. Jody Pierce Glover is the Prevention Educator for New Beginnings, an agency that provides housing and services to unaccompanied youth and families in crisis. She facilitates prevention and risk reduction groups with at-risk youth, as well as training staff and peer educators who co-facilitate groups. Jody has worked in collaboration with the 5
Maine Department of Education as a trainer for the Be Proud! Be Responsible! Curriculum; the High Risk Adolescent AIDS Prevention training; Creating Safety for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Youth in your Agency; and A Place for Everyone, Welcoming Gender Diverse Youth in Your Facilities. She has worked with community agencies facilitating Parent Nurturing classes and Relationship Traffic for at-risk youth. Jody offers over 20 years of expertise and experience in HIV prevention, risk reduction and youth work. Emer Smith, MPH, has been a Public Health Educator with the HIV, STD, & Viral Hepatitis Program of the Maine Center for Disease Control since She coordinates the HIV, STD, and Hepatitis C Counseling and Testing Programs for the state. Prior to her current position, she was employed with Rensselaer County Department of Health (NY), and Bangor Region Public Health and Wellness. She earned her MPH and BS (Human Biology) from University at Albany (SUNY), where she was a sexual health peer educator. Emer has long-standing interests in human sexuality, sexual and reproductive health, and health disparities. She currently resides in Windham with her bearded partner and her cat, Clue. Reproductive Coercion, Regina Rooney & Kini-Ana Tinkham Reproductive coercion using a partner s reproductive health to gain control over that person is common in abusive relationships, and yet it receives relatively little attention when we discuss pregnancy prevention or the components of a healthy relationship with teens. This workshop will examine reproductive coercion as it plays out in young people s lives, exploring the intersection between teens relationships and their reproductive health. Participants will gain ideas for integrating reproductive coercion into their primary prevention work around teen dating violence, and tools to help students who have experienced reproductive coercion. Regina Rooney is the Public Awareness Coordinator for the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, where she focuses on bringing prevention and awareness strategies to stakeholders throughout Maine. Her work includes collaborating with and providing training for employers, educators, health care workers, members of the press, advocates and the general community, with a focus on changing the social conditions that allow abuse to go unchecked and perpetrators to remain invisible. She holds a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Women's Studies from the University of Maine, and her professional background includes work in teaching, resource development and nonprofit community outreach. She spent three years working for Spruce Run, Penobscot County s domestic violence resource center, where she worked directly with people impacted by domestic violence. She is a current member of Maine s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women. Kini-Ana Tinkham, RN has been working in fields of maternal and family healthcare and public health for over thirty years. Kini facilitated system-level changes to improve responses to domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and adolescent relationship abuse for the Maine Family Planning system and their School-Based Health Care subrecipients through Futures Without Violence Project Connect, a national public health initiative to improve the public health response to violence against women. Kini provides trainings, advocacy and technical assistance nationally to clinicians and public health programs to prevent and improve the response to violence against women and families. Her additional responsibilities at Maine Family Planning include grants management and collaboration with federally qualified health centers and school-based centers in Maine to integrate quality family planning services into primary care for adults and teens. 6
