IMRE ALUMNI CONFERENCE 2012 Zero-CO2 Emission Energy Strategy: A point of view from a commercial enterprise energy department management. Project Controller Energy Structures, BMW Group, Ph.D. Program Member BMW Academy
A point of view from a commercial enterprise energy department management. Abstract Companies such as OEMs which are the leaders in sustainable management strategies are permanently on the way to improve their status quo. Elementary sustainable strategy element is to achieve an almost zero-emission energy supply during production. Furthermore, it is not only a key component of the sustainability but also a success of e-mobility. The aim of the presentation is to show a strategy manner in which the CO2-free energy supply for production companies and their manufacturing locations in developed and developing countries can be described and implemented. Objectives are based on the technical and economic potential, which have been extensively evaluated and combined in scenarios. The CO2-free heat supply (substitute natural gas) is currently only a limited economically or socially useful aim. Therefore, in the presentation, heat supply is recommended until natural gas as a "bridging fuel" that further potential towards still are under analyzing alternatives. The goal of 100% CO2-free external power source is economically feasible and is recommended for more detailed plans. A summary gives an overview of external needed factors such as political one to achieve such a zero-co2 emission during production. Keywords: zero-co2 emission, manufacturing companies, energy strategy
Content: My point of view Motivation for the conference Status Quo Courses for action How can such strategy look like Electricity Heat Case in developing country South Africa Resume
An approach from a company point of view with a discussion for political needed factors for RETs in developing and developed countries. Point of view: - World wide production and manufacturing location network - Of cause, each location needs to be supplied with energy - Individual company targets to achieve a lower CO2 emission level during production - Such strategies are dependent from local political frame works for RETs - Such strategies are dependent from stakeholder requirements - Such strategies have a different quantitative target for each company - Such strategies are long term targets till 2020 or 2050 i.e. - Such strategies are dependent from companies care for environment That s why company representatives are interested in future trends for RETs in developed and developing countries.
Motivation: - Networking - Information and experiences exchange Mexico Power Plant Landscape Germany - Power Plant Landscape
Motivation: - Credible and environmentally friendly (ie CO2 emission-free) electric mobility across the entire value chain - Influencing of the largest control lever for CO2 emissions during a car life time - Counteracting the rising number of car users (also means production volume increase) special in developing countries - CO2 emission level decreasing by decoupling from the actual linear increase during production Production Use Small cars Middle class car Uper class car Screen Source: Pritzke M.: CO2 freie Produktion im Großmaßstab, Publikationen - Sustainability Management & Engineering, 05/2010

Now we are motivated, so how can our strategy look like? Electricity Availability at the power market! According to increasing activties in developing countries Availability of green power (Reducing availability through increased international presence) economically available quantity
Now we are motivated, so how can our strategy look like? Electricity supply Zero-CO2 Strategy! OFF-SITE Passive CO2 emission improvements ON-SITE Physically and from the electricity net independent generated and self supplied electricity Procurement of green power by energy utility and supplier company plus the opportunity to trade and purchase green power at the stock market. Cooperate RETs projects with partners, based on an individual negotiated contract. RETs Projects by investment from the cooperate enterprise energy management (BMW Group Energy Management) Energy Stock Market Leipzig Wind Power Plants in Manufacturing Plant Leipzig Solar Thermal in Rosslyn Wind Power Plant Shenyang Political targets with a focus of CO2 free energy supply Net which can keep the electricity energy quality Liberal Energy Markets Energy Stock Market in Developing Countries Inividual Contract Opportunities
Now we are motivated, so how can our strategy look like? Electricity On Site Projects Project management world wide!

Now we are motivated, so how can our strategy look like? Electricity Szenarios! Scenario 1: the purchase of green power through energy utility companies. Scenario 2: use of green electricity from economically feasible projects (on-site/projects as purchasing power generation plants on direct contract or as a cooperate investment) Scenario 3: combined use of green electricity from economically feasible projects (on-site/off-site projects as purchasing power generation plants on direct contract or as a personal investment) and purchase of green power through dealers (GOs) The combination of the use of green electricity from economically feasible projects and purchase of green power through energy utility companies - Scenario 3 - is recommended. 1. The greatest potential for differentiation can be seen in the competition. 2. Flexibility and credible concept in connection with the vehicle are given. 3. Fastest way to achieve Zero-CO2 Emission
Now we are motivated, so how can our strategy look like? Heat! Opportunities for heat supply To day status quo Potentials for zero CO2 heat supply Risks Heating with fuels Lack of availability, costs / social acceptance, tech. maturity Use of renewable and alternative heat sources at locations Lack of availability and availability
Now we are motivated, so how can our strategy look like? Heat! Natural gas is currently the fossil fuel with the lowest CO2 factor, due to lack of availability of economic and socially accepted alternatives is natural gas for the foreseeable future in the heat supply replaceable. Politicians Creating the frame. Frame for an extended and environmental friendly sources back round for heating. - Bio Gas - Hydrogen - Synthetic Gas - Geothermal - Solarthermal - Waste heat using technologies
