The DFA said the Philippine government is extending all assistance to the OFW, whom it identified as Jennifer Dalquez, radio dzbb s James Agustin reported. Citing information from the DFA, Agustin said Dalquez was found guilty of killing her employer on Dec. 7 last year. The Embassy has extended all necessary assistance, including hiring a lawyer, the DFA said. It added the Philippine embassy will assist Dalquez in appealing her sentence. Also, it said her family has been informed of the development. The Embassy will assist OFW Dalquez appeal her sentence. The family has been informed of these developments, the DFA said. GMA News Philippines backs support for small enterprises at APEC meet MANILA: The Philippines top trade official yesterday called for support for the integration of micro, small and medium enterprises in global trade, which he said would help reduce poverty and inequality in the Asia-Pacific region. Trade has been a powerful growth engine in the 21 economies comprising the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation, where MSMEs account for over 97 percent of all businesses, said Philippine Trade and Industry Secretary Gregorio Domingo. Manila is pushing for greater support for the integration into the global trade and value chain of MSMEs, which provide jobs to more than half the workers in the Asia-Pacific region. Domingo opened an APEC trade ministers meeting Saturday on the central Philippine resort island of Boracay, one of many meetings hosted this year by Manila before the APEC summit in November, a government statement said. Domingo said these small businesses play an important role in poverty alleviation and long-term growth in each of the APEC economies and the region as a whole. Such enterprises represent 98 of all registered businesses in the Philippines, employ about 60 percent of the nation s work force and account for about one-third of the country s gross domestic product, according to the Philippines Department of Trade and Industry. Leave immediately...you go! a Chinese radio operator told the aircraft, where a CNN team was also on board. The US used a P8-A Poseidon, their most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, which flew at 15,000 feet, its lowest point. It was the first time the Pentagon had allowed to show a video of China s building activities and the Chinese Navy s warning to a US plane, CNN said. The surveillance plane appeared to have taken off from Clark Air Base in Pampanga based on the video shown by CNN. Jim Sciutto, the CNN senior correspondent who joined the mission, also went live on air in Manila. During the mission, which aimed at monitoring Chinese activities, the US military pilots were ordered out of the airspace eight times. The CNN report said the Kagitingan Reef (Fiery Cross Reef) and Panganiban Reef (Mischief Reef) that fleets of dozens of dredgers could be seen hard at work, sucking sand off the bottom of the sea and blowing it in huge plumes to create new land above the surface. Panganiban Reef is within the Philippines exclusive economic zone. The Philippines has also experienced warnings from China in its air patrols over the West Philippine Sea recently. China claims most parts of the resource-rich West Philippine Sea, which is also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei. Satellite images released in recent months suggest significant progress in China s reclamation efforts, as it converts reefs into artificial islands. The militant, identified as Mindas Manda, died in a gunfight Wednesday after he refused to surrender when he was cornered in the market of Jolo, the capital of southern Sulu province, said provincial military task force commander Col. Allan Arrojano. Arrojano said that Manda also was suspected in other kidnappings in Malaysia, which is close to Tawi-Tawi, a province farther south consisting of a cluster of islands close to the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah where Manda had operated. Malaysian media reports say the families of the kidnap victims - a man and a woman - have received ransom demands. The two Malaysians were seized by gunmen from a sea food restaurant in Sabah on May 14 and were believed to have been taken to one of the many southern Philippine islands. The Abu Sayyaf has an estimated 400 members and has had links with al-qaida. It has turned to ransom kidnappings and extortion to survive following years of setbacks from U.S. military-backed offensives. 5 MONDAY, MAY 24, Former UP Law dean nominated to Int l Criminal Court Ayear after Miriam Defensor Santiago resigned from the International Criminal Court (ICC), the vacancy she created will be filled up. Remember that the senator stepped down in June 2014because of a debilitating ailment, chronic fatigue syndrome. She was the first Filipino to be elected ICC judge. In June, the Assembly of States Parties will meet in The Hague, where the ICC is based, and choose from two candidates: Raul Pangalangan from the Philippines and Ibrahim Mashhoor Aljazy from Jordan. The third candidate from Bangladesh withdrew. The ICC is an independent Court and the world s first permanent international criminal court established to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. In a note verbale, the Philippine government nominated Pangalangan, law professor and former dean at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law, based on his established competence in international law... He was also a Philippine delegate to the 1998 Rome conference that established the ICC. (READ the note verbale here.) Pangalangan, 56, graduated from the UP College of Law and received his doctorate in international law from Harvard. Apart from teaching law at UP, Pangalangan is currently the publisher of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. If chosen, he will serve a term of 9 years and will be one of 18 judges. In a very transparent process, the credentials of the two candidates as well as their evaluation by the Advisory Committee on Nomination of Judges of the ICC are all available online. Both candidates were asked to reply to a long questionnaire that includes questions on why they want to be elected judge of the ICC, the challenges facing the Court, their experience and qualification. In a report by the international sports network, Mayweather was said to have earned $6 million per minute during his record-breaking welterweight unification fight against Pacquiao last May 2 (May 3, Manila time), bolstering his earnings to the top of the list.
