Academic Program: 2016 CLS Summer Schedule and Tuition Academic programs require diagnostic testing for all new students to determine curriculum and placement. Leap: $50 Reading and Math: $70 Learning Disabilities: $170 Includes: instruction by certified teachers, class materials, posttesting, and end of session written report and conference with teacher. 2 SUMMIT COURSE DESCRPTIONS Offers activities to encourage learning and critical thinking through hands-on activities. Putting It Together Crafts turn the ordinary into extraordinary with fun, hands-on experiences. Students will cut, paint, and sculpt to inspire creative expression. By mixing and matching materials, art will be original every time. From Galaxy slime to clay sculptors, children will create treasures to keep for themselves or to give as a gift to a friend. Explore the possibilities, and join us for this oneof-a kind craft event. Shake, Rattle, Rock, & Roll a hands-on exploration of the earth s crust Junior geologists will learn about the anatomy of the earth, identify rocks and their origins, send earthquake vibrations, and construct earthquake models and volcanoes. Taking Off! Discover the excitement of flight through hands on experience by constructing and flying paper airplanes; understanding the aerodynamics of flight through the concepts of lift, thrust, and drag; constructing AMA CUB rubber band powered model airplanes; experience launching and flight of forced air rockets and rocket balloons; compete with fellow classmates using the world record distance holder Aerobie Frisbee to achieve the longest flight distance; seeing how simple chemical reactions can propel miniature rockets in the classroom; creating a giant geyser with items you can buy at the grocery store; learning how cutting edge satellite launching rockets are being designed, built and tested to return their stages to earth to be used again. Perhaps, one of our students will be the first Martian!

3 SUMMIT COURSE DESCRPTIONS Crystals and All That Glitters Be amazed by creating snow globes, crystal geodes, fireworks (non-exploding!) creeping crystals, mystery gardens, celery printing, shimmery rock friends, sparkling sand vases, ice cream, and more. Use your imagination to create crystal and glittery masterpieces. Join us for a fun time! Butterflies, Bugs, and Earthworms Get your nets ready to catch, observe, and learn about a variety of insects. We will venture into the woods, walk the open prairie, and hike along the creek to find these six legged critters. What s that you say! Worms don t have legs! Learn more about these wiggly creatures and how they are nature s natural recyclers. Be prepared to get a little dirty and to spend quite a lot of time outdoors. By the time the week is over, you will be bugging for more! Croaking Frogs and Slow Turtles Join us for an exciting live animal study. See these animals in their natural habitat and learn more about them in the classroom. Visit a nearby creek and collect frogs and turtles. Photograph, measure, and draw them. Study their behavior; how do they eat, move, and live. Construct mazes to see how they learn. Hold frog races! Snooze through turtle races (or maybe not!). Investigate their importance to their environment and to us. Release them back into nature. Then dissect prepared specimens to learn about their anatomy. Become an expert amateur Biologist! Wildlife Explorers A & B Spend extensive time outdoors searching for wildlife, using environmental science instruments, recording data, and identifying animals and plants. Come prepared for extensive hiking in woodlands, walking in streambeds, and getting covered with mud. Continue to learn about wildlife as we learn safe, basic dissecting techniques using frogs, eyes, worms, grasshoppers, brains, hearts, and crayfish. Catch the excitement of worm racing. Enjoy Mr. Grey s worm brownies as we learn about the wildlife around us!

4 SUMMIT COURSE DESCRPTIONS Who Dunnit A & B Join us for this exciting class and discover who dunnit by using several authentic crime scene investigators techniques! Students will solve a murder throughout this exciting week by using ink chromatography, fingerprinting, handwriting samples, forensic dentistry, and much more. Students will engage in hands-on experiments including creating a baseline for a lie detector test, which we will design, and create in class. We also plan on have a real life forensic dentist visit as well as deputies from the Coroner's office. Don t miss out on this opportunity to get a head start on a criminal justice career or just learn more about solving crimes! Our Amazing World Come along with us as we discover the fantastic world of science in our own back yard. Explore a pond, view the inhabitants of the ecosystem under a microscope and discover nature s early warning system. We will also enter the marvelous world of amphibians. Learn all about these fascinating creatures their habits, how they live and how to care for pet frogs and turtles. Join us as we take a delightful journey in nature. Aquatic Adventurers A & B Do you wonder what kinds of critters live at the bottom of the creek? Or what lives in the sand and mud? Then Aquatic Adventures is for you! Be ready to be wet and have fun in the water! Fossils Journey into our distant past through fossil records. Learn how to collect, identify, and classify our discoveries. Dig through rocks to find your own fossil! Exploring Chinese Culture and Customs Join us as we travel to China to discover one of the oldest cultures in the world. We will learn about Chinese history, significant inventions, fascinating festivals, creative crafts, challenging language, and delicious food. This hands-on interactive class will enable students to explore China and learn about this rich culture. Students will learn to speak and write simple phrases in Chinese, eat with chopsticks, and make their own festival crafts. Get your passports ready to join us for an interesting journey to the other side of the world!

5 SUMMIT COURSE DESCRPTIONS Jurassic World...Rockford Style Are you a dinosaur fan-atic? Do you have a great idea for the next Jurassic movie? Would you like to tinker with the science behind the movie? Pack up your creativity and join us. We will use Jurassic style plant life to set the scene as we create original movies complete with lots of action and amazing sound effects. In addition, we will focus on the science behind the movie, and we will even extract DNA to learn more about genetic engineering. Cardboard Furniture Challenge SUMMIT Are you the type of person who notices cool design? Someone who likes to sketch, create, and then just needs to make it a reality? Oh, Tinkerers, then this class is for you! Join us as we transform simple cardboard into stylish AND functional furniture. Meet a professional furniture maker and local carpenter. Learn valuable techniques used when form and function meet to create something FABULOUS. Gizmos & Gadgets Join us for breaking, tinkering, building, and remaking featuring the techy phenomenon LittleBits and Strawbees? If you love to take things apart, hack, and create cool gadgets using recycled materials and circuits, come tinker with us! Kitchen Chemistry and Concoctions For the young chemist who enjoys hands-on experiments in a fun and safe environment while learning about mixtures, reactions, and solutions. See how everyday household items turn into slime, chemical volcanos, bubbles, and much, much more in this activity packed class!

6 SUMMIT COURSE DESCRPTIONS Robotics Students are mentored into becoming lifelong learners and leave this class with a strong sense of accomplishment while developing new friendships as well as increasing their personal confidence. Students design, build, and program awe-inspiring robots. Classmates work as a team to complete projects and win games created specifically for LEGO robots. LEGO robot command module features improved digital sensors, a seven state color-light sensor, new gyro sensors, touch sensors, and an improved ultrasonic sensor. Join us as we develop real world skills by project creation, troubleshooting, learn engineering techniques for drafting top-quality designs, and learn the basics of robotics programming. Lego Engineering Enter the world of technology as we discover how simple machines function using LEGO pieces. Through hands-on guided discovery, students have the opportunity to learn how machines function while applying skills to invent new devices and work-saving implements. The aerodynamics of flight is discovered through interactive, hands-on experience. The opportunity to study the concepts of lift and thrust through design and construction of paper aircraft. Does their paper aircraft fly straight like a dart, returns like a boomerang, or flies in a loop? Through forced air, rockets and rocket balloons will soar as high as the trees. Join this adventure into the world of of Taking Off.
