1 Reporting prinicples and methodology Summary social and economic data principles Social and economic data are collected from our SAP HR system and the annual report which is audited according to standard international auditing practices. Please refer to the annual report for more information. Summary environment, health and safety data principles Environment, health and safety data is collected in the Environmental Performance Management (EPM) system, a web based application that is accessible for input by our global locations. In 2006, the EPM was implemented at all production sites to unify the data collection and validation process. Input of environment, health and safety data follows a work-flow where appointed editors at the site level enter monthly performance data which is approved by production or site management. Significant month-to-month variations are flagged in the system and are supported by clarification and necessary supporting documentation. A secondary validation occurs at corporate where existing flags are investigated with the sites directly. The frequency of secondary validation, generally depends on the performance indicator, but ranges from monthly for Performance Indicators (KPIs), and annually for other GRI. Third-party validation occurs on an annual basis and covers all GRI included in the Sustainability Report. Performance data and trends are available to our sites via the business warehouse reporting module and SAP Business Objects. Quarterly performance and progress toward targets is consolidated and displayed on the Danisco Intranet Portal (DIP). Performance Indicators are normalized using revenue (for example: water, energy, CO2). Other performance are normalized by kilogram of product. Due to the complexity in of our product portfolio, and the global reach of our operations, comparison between two quarterly periods might not be precise due to seasonal variations in ambient temperature, product demands, and production models. Specific economic data principles Financial data has been collected from our financial department as part of the consolidation of our annual performance. The figures will be published in our 2010/11 annual report. Revenue comprises invoiced sales less returned goods, bonuses and discounts granted in connection with sales. Sale of goods is recognized when the goods have been delivered and ownership and risks have been passed to the buyer. Government grants which are disclosed in a note, include grants for research, CO2 allowances and investments. Grants for research and development and CO2 allowances are recognized as income on a systematic basis to match the related cost. Investment grants are set off against the cost of the subsidised assets. Payments to governments includes any payment to governments to maintain the right to operate our business in the regions that we are located. Payments to government include all taxes and related penalties. Community investments includes the cost of donations and related engagements in the local community. Specific social data principles Includes data related to our employees and the communities that we operate in. Most data is collected from our SAP HR Management Module and covers all 6,890 employees globally, however some of the information is collected in surveys administered once per year. Gender diversity has been calculated for the entire Danisco employee population using our SAP HR Management data. Health and safety an injury or illness is considered work-related if an event or exposure in the work environment either caused or contributed to the 1 SUstainability report 2010/11 reporting principles / GRI Content Index
2 Reporting principles and methodology resulting condition, or aggravated a pre-existing condition. Work relatedness is presumed for injuries and illnesses resulting from events or exposures occurring at the employer s establishment. Work relatedness is not presumed for injuries and illnesses resulting from events or exposures outside of the employer s establishment; they are considered work related only if the worker is engaged in a work activity or is present as a condition of employment (travel to or from work is not included). Lost-Time Injuries (LTIs) are defined as those injuries resulting in at least one day away from work, counted as the next full workday following the incident. Severity is calculated as the number of lost working days/lti. Collective bargaining the percentage of employees under collective bargaining agreements is not calculated directly as it has been managed on a local site level. Instead we have used the % of employees not covered by our Short Term Incentive (STI) programme as it is an indicator of those employees that the collective agreement would not allow participation. The consolidation of these employees into the global STI system is driven from the site level to corporate. Employee turnover includes both voluntary and involuntary turnover as we are not able to differentiate between the two. We estimate that our voluntary turnover is roughly 5% during 2010/11 and is relatively unchanged from 2009/10 Specific environment data principles Definitions for environmental data follows pre-defined definitions based on international norms and standards. The definitions are standardized across the organization to all of our facilities with more than 50% ownership (excluding DuPont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol LLC, USA and Gas Natural Caxitlán, S. de R.L. de C.V., Mexico). This includes all global manufacturing sites (including Anyang, China 54% ownership), and a number of our administrative and R&D sites (Copenhagen, Denmark, Palo Alto, California, Leiden, The Netherlands). Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions includes all GHGs measured as CO2 equivalents based on: 1) supplier provided data, 2) empirically measured data, and 3) conversion factors for their 100-year Global Warming Potentials from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in order of preference. > Direct CO2e - Scope 1 includes fuels burned internally for heat and steam production, internal transportation (including company owned vehicles and forklifts. Does not include leased fleet vehicles), Kyoto gasses (CFC, NOx, methane, HFCs and PFCs Danisco does not use or emit SF6 or N20). > Indirect CO2e Scope 2 includes CO2e emissions from purchased electricity, steam and/ or heat. > Indirect CO2e Scope 3 includes empirically measured employee travel and goods transportation to customers. Use phase emission reductions, raw material transportation, retail impacts, etc. were estimated using Ecoinvent and Simapro. Direct energy consumption includes energy produced internally for electricity, heat and steam. Internal energy is produced in company owned equipment such as boilers and turbines and is measured in terms of fuel consumption in supplier invoices. The energy content of the burned fuels is either provided by the supplier or calculated using the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. Indirect energy consumption includes all electricity, steam and heat produced by external providers and is measured at the entrance to the facility and provided in the invoice from the supplier. Renewable energy the definition of sources are found in the WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Protocol and include Solar, wind, hydro electric, biogas, biomass, wood, biodiesel, bio-fuels. Non-renewable energy the definition of sources are found in the WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol and include all fossil based fuels, nuclear, and geothermal. Water consumption includes all abstraction of water that does not return to the original source of abstraction. It does not include non-contact cooling water if it is not contaminated and returned to the same source. Water sources include rain, sea, fresh surface water, ground and municipal. 2 SUstainability report 2010/11 reporting principles / GRI Content Index
