Each segment of the J2EE application is packaged into separate containers. According to the J2EE architecture servlets and JSPs and Java thick client applications also will have containers (not strictly limited to just enterprise beans). The containers and the code contained within them can take advantage of a wide array of standard J2EE functions and APIs that are only available in a J2EE platform (WebSphere Application Server v4.0) Copyright 2002,MVS Training, Inc., All rights reserved rights reserved, no unauthorized duplication. 19 Distribute the.war file Illustrating an HTTP Server Transmits HTML documents back to a clients web browser HTTP Request HTTP Server Clients HTML Documents When a web server is started, it defines a set of port numbers where it will be accepting connections (the default is port 80). The set of ports is defined in the servers configuration file (for IBM HTTP server it is httpd.conf). When a connection is sent to this port address, the operating system will route the request to the Web server. As long as the request is based upon the HTTP protocol, then the server will be able to service the request. Copyright 2002,MVS Training, Inc., All rights reserved rights reserved, no unauthorized duplication. Page 19 of 19.

20 The openness of the Web server is a liability when security is a concern, thus the capability to configure a secure server is available. Most web servers can be configured using Secure Socket Layers (SSL). The definition of a secure server requires the generation of encrypted keys that will be utilized for encrypting each session. The IBM HTTP server utilizes the IKEYMAN utility for this purpose. Copyright 2002,MVS Training, Inc., All rights reserved rights reserved, no unauthorized duplication. Page 20 of 20.

21 HTTP Server and Application Server The role of an Application Server is to extend the functionality of Web servers to J2EE HTTP Server Servlets and JSPs WebSphere Application Server HTTP based upon request/response paradigm The IBM HTTP Server is powered by Apache and is based upon the Apache HTTP Server and will run on AIX, Solaris, Windows NT, and Linux. Although the IBM HTTP Server does utilize the Apache Server, it has been enhanced. The Server utilizes Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as a stateless protocol for send/receive of data; each request/response is independent and contains no historical information. Any request for stateful servlets, JSP documents, or enterprise JavaBeans will be routed from the web server to the attached application server. The application server provides an application server plug-in to successfully route the appropriate requests to it from the web server. All application servers listen on port 8008 for HTTP requests and then transmit them to either; Servlet Engine, JSP Engine or the EJB Container.
