4 Tepper School of Business INTRODUCTION This handbook was prepared for use by the students, faculty and staff at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. No parts of this handbook may be reproduced or distributed without written permission from Dr. Robert T. Monroe, Director, Online Hybrid MBA. While this handbook is specific to your academic experience in the Tepper School, there are several other resources and offices graduate students are encouraged to consult during their tenure at Carnegie Mellon University. > > All questions regarding this publication or the University s policies should be directed to the Student Services staff. Students are responsible for knowledge of these policies. STATEMENT ON COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS The Tepper School of Business is a diverse and inclusive community based on trust, respect and support toward all individuals, facilities, intellectual endeavors and activities. It is expected that every individual will contribute every day to recognizing, maintaining and improving the community environment of the Tepper School. It is this shared environment of the Tepper School that best communicates and differentiates our uniqueness as a special learning place to earn your Masters degree. We must continually protect and nurture our community environment.
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ CARNEGIE MELLON CODE Students at Carnegie Mellon, because they are members of an academic community dedicated to the achievement of excellence, are expected to meet the highest standards of personal, ethical and moral conduct possible. These standards require personal integrity, a commitment to honesty without compromise, as well as truth without equivocation and a willingness to place the good of the community above the good of the self. Obligations once undertaken must be met, commitments kept. As members of the Carnegie Mellon community, individuals are expected to uphold the standards of the community in addition to holding others accountable for said standards. It is rare that the life of a student in an academic community can be so private that it will not affect the community as a whole or that the above standards do not apply. The discovery, advancement and communication of knowledge are not possible without a commitment to these standards. Creativity cannot exist without acknowledgment of the creativity of others. New knowledge cannot be developed without credit for prior knowledge. Without the ability to trust that these principles will be observed, an academic community cannot exist. The commitment of its faculty, staff and students to these standards contributes to the high respect in which the Carnegie Mellon degree is held. Students must not destroy that respect by their failure to meet these standards. Students who cannot meet them should voluntarily withdraw from the university.

12 Tepper School of Business SECTION 1: ONLINE HYBRID MBA CURRICULUM & UNIT REQUIREMENTS 1.1 Online Hybrid MBA Students Entering Fall 2014 Online Hybrid MBA candidates must register for and complete a minimum of 192 units of coursework that fulfill the graduation requirements. Online Hybrid MBA students must complete all requirements for the MBA degree within four calendar years of matriculation. Standard completion time for the program is 16 mini- semesters (approximately 33 months). First Year Online Hybrid MBA Students Mini 1 Mini 2 Mini 3 Mini Managing People and Teams (6 units) Probability and Statistics (6 units) Managerial Economics (6 units) Financial and Managerial Accounting I (6 units) Financial and Managerial Accounting II (6 units) Optimization (6 units) Managing Networks and Organizations (6 units) Statistical Decision Making (6 units)

14 Tepper School of Business Third Year Online Hybrid MBA Students Minis 1-4 Electives In addition to the required 192 units of coursework, attendance and/or participation in the Leadership Assessment, Leadership Feedback and Leadership Immersion programs are requirements for completion of the Online Hybrid MBA program. SECTION 2: MBA COURSE REQUIREMENTS 2.1 Concentration Requirement Three elective courses in one of the following areas constitute a concentration. Online Hybrid MBA students must complete at least one concentration from the following list: Entrepreneurship Finance Marketing Operations Management Students may elect to complete multiple concentrations. Online Hybrid MBA entering in fall 2014 are required to have an analytical depth requirement of two electives from a provided list of courses. The Student Services office will provide students with the list.
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Conduct of Classes Faculty have high expectations of conduct to maximize the learning experience from every class in the program for all students. Students are expected to attend all access weekends. The access weekend classes and events are an integral part of the Online Hybrid MBA program and constitute a substantial portion of the instructional time for each Online Hybrid MBA course. Dates for access weekends for each academic year will be announced well in advance of the events (typically at least six months prior). Students are expected to plan accordingly. If a student will be unable to attend an access weekend they need to contact the director or associate director of the Online Hybrid MBA program as far in advance of the access weekend as they are able to do so to discuss their situation and request an excused absence from the weekend s classes. The director or associate director will discuss the request with the student and the instructors for the classes to be missed, in an effort to provide an alternative way for the student to complete the course. Depending on the nature of the course, it may or may not be possible for a student to complete the course without attending the access weekend. Access weekend classes will not be recorded. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes, virtually or in person, as appropriate. Class attendance is expected unless the professor explicitly informs the student that other ways of completing the work are acceptable. This includes access weekend classes as well as
16 Tepper School of Business the live online class sessions held between access weekends. Faculty may enforce specific attendance requirements to assist in determining class performance. Faculty are expected to be alert to absenteeism detrimental to a student s performance and to call such cases to the attention of the executive director of student services. Students are expected to attend class on time and remain in the class for the entire period. Consequences of tardiness, absence from class, or late assigned work are at the discretion of the professor. Faculty reserve the right to deny tardy students admission to the classroom or online class session. Tardiness is disruptive to the entire class and is not respectful of classmates and the faculty. If there is a credible and legitimate reason for early class exit or late arrival, the situation should be discussed with the faculty member before class for approval. This standard holds for both in- person and online class sessions. Students are expected to attend the online class meetings for the section in which they are registered. Many courses will be offered with multiple online meeting sections, each of which will meet at a different time or day of the week. Students are expected to participate in the class meeting for the section in which they are registered. If there are circumstances in a given week that will make it difficult or impossible for a student to participate in the course section for which they are registered, the student may request permission from the instructor to participate in an alternative class section (i.e., to participate in the Tuesday evening session instead of the Thursday evening session). Permission to switch class times will be granted at the
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ discretion of the instructor and will likely not be granted if doing so will harm the class experience for students properly registered in the desired section. Students should expect cold- calling in both their required and elective courses. Students are expected to complete the readings, case preparations and other assignments prior to each class session and be prepared to actively participate in class discussion, presentations and Q&A sessions. Students should expect random team formation during their first year in the program. Faculty may use Tepper Teams formed at BaseCamp for some projects, but will also randomly assign students. This simulates real work environments where different teams work on different projects. Random team formation is at the discretion of the professor in elective courses. Students should expect to participate in group work. Each class may have different group processes and expectations as defined by faculty. Students are responsible for understanding specific faculty and course group protocols. Collaboration among groups or individuals is permissible unless explicitly defined, limited or prohibited by faculty. Group work is held to the same ethical standards as individual work. If in doubt about a group assignment, project or other class activity, clarify with the professor. Be absolutely sure of assignment completion rules by group or individual. Students are expected to adhere to the Honor Code. Faculty will remind students at the beginning of each class
18 Tepper School of Business and during the mini, especially at exam times, of the adherence to the described Honor Code in this handbook. 2.3 MBA Grades 9 Point Scale Grade GPA Meaning A+ 9.0 Outstanding A 8.0 Excellent A- 7.0 Very Good B+ 6.0 Above Average B 5.0 Average B- 4.0 Below Average C+ 3.0 Poor C 2.0 Very Poor C- 1.0 Extremely Poor *D+, D, R 0.0 Failure (No Units)
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Letter Grade Conversion Table Grade 4.33 Scale 9.0 Scale A A A B B B C C C *D *D R *Tepper MBA courses do not have D or D+ grades. Students may only receive these grades in non- Tepper courses. Below are Tepper School of Business grades that do not affect Grade Point Average: Grade Meaning E Exempt (No Units) 0 Audit (No Units) P Pass (In a course taken P/N** - - also referred to as Pass/Fail) N No Pass (In a course taken P/N - - also referred to as Pass/Fail) W Withdrawal (No Units)
20 Tepper School of Business **A P grade corresponds to a C- or better. Students performing below the C- level receive an N. MBA candidates must have a cumulative GPA of at least 5.0 (a B ) for: all required courses all courses counting toward the 192 units required for graduation. All students must pass all required courses. In order to pass a required course, including a capstone course, MBA candidates must earn a grade of C- or better. Students earn credit and grade points only if they have both registered for and completed a course. Pass/No Pass courses earn units only. Audit courses do not earn grade points or units. Canvas access does not mean that you are enrolled. If a student has not registered for a course, neither course credit nor a course grade will be processed. 2.4 Grading Options Exemptions Online Hybrid MBA students are generally not eligible to exempt courses. The one exception to this policy is that students with a United States CPA certification may exempt (45-700) Financial and Managerial Accounting I and (45-701) Financial and Managerial Accounting II. Students who exempt and/or will not receive any units for the courses and are expected to take elective courses in place of the required accounting courses. Please note that there may not be an appropriate elective offered during the desired mini to replace the accounting courses exempted. In this case, the student may elect to complete the accounting course for credit. Students who would like an exemption from and/or should contact Cassandra Walker, Student Services
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Coordinator, to demonstrate CPA certification and plan an alternative schedule of courses. Pass/No Pass MBA candidates may take a maximum of 12 of the 192 required units in elective MBA courses on a pass/no pass basis. Pass/No Pass approval is at the discretion of the faculty. Courses that are offered with a default grading scale of pass/no pass are rare. If a student elects to take a class that is offered as a pass/no pass only, it will not count toward the 12 units of pass/no pass permitted in the degree requirements. To take a course pass/no pass, students must complete the following: 1. Register for course in the Tepper School Registration System. 2. Complete the Pass/No Pass form (available from an academic advisor) including signature of course professor and student. Typically, this step is completed during the Access Weekend. 3. Return form to Student Services prior to the Tepper School add/drop deadline. Once students commit to pass/no pass grading, they are not permitted to revert back to the regular grading system. Students who take a course on a pass/no pass basis will earn units towards their overall degree. Additionally, courses taken pass/no pass will count towards concentration requirements. A pass/no pass course does not affect a student s overall GPA.
22 Tepper School of Business Auditing Students who audit MBA elective courses, must maintain a presence in the classroom without earning units or grade points. Audit approval is at the discretion of the professor. Auditors may be expected to participate in class discussion, cases and take examinations, subject to the agreement of the professor. Attendance is required. Students who successfully complete an audit receive the grade, O. Tuition charges are generated for part time students who audit classes. Generally, Online Hybrid MBA student do not audit courses. Withdraw If a student wishes to drop a course after the add/drop deadline for a specific mini or semester, the student must withdraw from the course. Students should complete the MBA Course Withdrawal form (available online), obtain faculty permission ( ) and return it to Student Services. This must be done prior to the final day of that class. The W grade is listed on the transcript. Withdrawn courses are not removed from your academic record. 2.5 Retaking Courses Students may not retake, for credit, a course they previously completed. (Withdrawing from a course does not equal completed.) Schedule adjustments will not be made to accommodate such requests. The only exception to this policy is for failed required courses. Students must retake for credit, required courses they fail. Students must pass the class on the second attempt and are only permitted two attempts to pass any required course.
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Failing grades are not removed from student transcripts; they appear in addition to the new grade. 2.6 Make- up Exams Students enrolled in a course are expected to take all exams when and where they are scheduled. A make- up exam will only be given in documented emergency situations and for legitimate and unpredictable reasons (e.g., hospitalization, birth of the student s child, etc.), and only after obtaining explicit permission from the Director, Online Hybrid MBA program. In cases where a make- up exam is approved, the director will work with the student and faculty member on a case- by- case basis to find a reasonable accommodation for the student. Please note that job interviews, recruiting or leisure travel, and other personal plans will not be considered sufficient cause to justify a make- up exam. 2.7 Incomplete Grades Students must complete all course requirements on time; exceptions are determined solely by professors. 1. All incomplete required courses must be completed. An incomplete in a required course prevents the course from serving as a prerequisite for other courses. Students are encouraged to resolve the incomplete grade as soon as possible. The faculty member has the discretion to establish a timeline for completion. 2. An incomplete grade not resolved within one semester will become a failing grade, an R, by default. Students are responsible for monitoring the status of their grades and taking steps to remove incomplete grades from their
24 Tepper School of Business academic records. Incomplete grades will prevent degree certification for graduates. SECTION 3: REGISTRATION & ENROLLMENT 3.1 Course Availability The Tepper School reserves the right to withdraw any announced course if enrollment is too small to warrant offering it. The Tepper School also reserves the right to make changes in the schedule of hours, units, or instructional staff when such changes are deemed necessary or advisable. 3.2 Preregistration All first- year students have a set of required classes that are taken in the first year in the Online Hybrid MBA program. Registration for these courses is completed by the MBA Student Services office. No action is required by students during this time. Online Hybrid MBA students start choosing elective courses in mini 1 of their second year. The remaining required courses in the 2 nd year Online Hybrid MBA program will be scheduled by the student during preregistration. If you do not register for your required courses, they will be chosen by Student Services. The required course(s) take precedence and the elective course may have to be adjusted to accommodate the change. The Tepper School does not participate in online registration (OLR) at the university level for MBA courses. We utilize our own web- based registration, add/drop system.
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Registration Deadlines Adding and dropping courses must be completed by the deadline listed in the Tepper School Academic Calendar for a specific mini. (Note: Some faculty may not permit a course to be added after the first day or the first week of classes.) This deadline applies to all requests for pass/no pass and audit status. The period for add/drop, pass/no pass and audit requests is typically the first two weeks of a mini semester. The only change that can be made after the add/drop deadline is to withdraw from the course with faculty permission. A (W) will appear on the student s transcript and the course cannot be removed from the academic record. 3.4 Course Load Online Hybrid MBA Students The expected course load in the Online Hybrid MBA program is 12 units per mini- semester. Students wanting to carry more than 18 units must secure permission by contacting an academic advisor. Online Hybrid MBA students may overload courses only after 48 units have been completed (in general, after completion of minis 1-4 of the first year). SECTION 4: ACADEMIC RESOURCES 4.1 Course Descriptions Course descriptions are available online. Students must fulfill both the prerequisite course requirements and any other requirements (e.g., a minimum grade of B+ in a prerequisite course) to take certain MBA courses. Only the course professor
26 Tepper School of Business may make exceptions to these rules. Prerequisite courses are listed on both course descriptions and course schedules. Course information is available on the Tepper School Current MBA Student website (click on Course Schedule). This site is an essential tool for course planning. It is not a registration site. The course schedule lists the number, title, professor, section, days, hours, and prerequisites for each course. 4.2 Academic Calendar The Online Hybrid MBA academic calendar issued by the Student Services office and is the official calendar for Online Hybrid MBA students. This calendar differs from the official Carnegie Mellon calendar and has additional Tepper School specific dates. Students are advised to review the Tepper School Online Hybrid MBA academic calendar carefully and use it to plan for key dates and commitments. In addition to the officially published calendar, many important dates, such as Access Weekends and Accelerate Leadership workshops are listed prominently in the Access Weekends course on Canvas. Students are encouraged to review these calendars and dates carefully and mark their own personal calendars with dates that are relevant to them far in advance. 4.3 Academic Advising and Tutoring Each student is assigned an academic advisor from the Student Services staff; however, if your advisor is not available, students should feel free to talk with anyone in the office. Students experiencing difficulty in a specific class should consult with the faculty member and/or the course TA first to see what
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ class resources are available. Most required courses have TA sessions or review sessions as well as office hours with the TA or faculty member. 4.4 Examination Schedules Final examinations occur at the end of each mini- semester. Exams will typically be given on Friday afternoon of the access weekend following the last day of a mini. Final exam schedules are posted on the web. Students are responsible for knowing the current examination schedules and are expected to take exams at the published times and locations. In addition to a final examination, instructors may, at their discretion, elect to give examinations during the mini. All such exams must either occur during the scheduled online class time or be structured such that students have substantial flexibility in selecting a time to take the exam. 4.5 Course and Faculty Evaluations The Tepper School community relies on input and feedback to help drive improvement. Each mini during the final weeks of class, students evaluate both the course and faculty for each class they take. Student participation in this evaluation process is essential and the faculty, administration and the Graduate Business Association take this process very seriously. Evaluation results aid in (1) better decision making for future students considering registering for specific courses, (2) shaping/improving courses for future iterations, and (3) providing a primary tool used for tenure and promotion decisions for faculty. The expectation is that students will complete all of their course evaluations and use the document to provide honest and comprehensive information for the faculty member(s).
28 Tepper School of Business Evaluations are online and may be completed at any time during the evaluation period. Statistical results of past evaluations are available online at: students/current- graduate- students/academic- information/course- evaluation/summary- evaluation/index.aspx 4.6 Transcripts and Unofficial Grade Reports Only Carnegie Mellon s Registrars office may issue official transcripts. Unofficial grade reports are available from the Student Services office. You can access your grades via the Web at the Student Information Online (SIO) section at University policy prohibits the release of grades over the telephone, by fax or by e- mail. 4.7 Bright Ideas Do you have a question, a suggestion, an idea or topic you would like to discuss, and are not sure who in the Tepper School to contact? Bright Ideas may be the resource you are looking for. Use the link below to submit your question, suggestion or idea to the MBA Student Services office. Your submission will be acknowledged and forwarded to appropriate individual(s) in the Tepper School for response. SECTION 5: ACADEMIC POLICIES 5.1 Transfer Policy Transfer between programs can only occur at the beginning of a semester and is available to students in good academic standing.
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Only one transfer is allowed per student. When considering the possibility of transferring, students are required to take the following actions: 1. Contact your Student Services academic advisor 2. Contact a Tepper School Financial Aid staff member 3. Contact a Career Opportunities counselor 4. Contact the Office of International Education if visa status is affected Online Hybrid MBA to Full- Time Online Hybrid MBA students in good standing (i.e., overall GPA of B or better with no academic integrity offenses) and who have no admissions restrictions may transfer into the Full- Time program only after completing their first year required course sequence, mini 1 through and including mini 6. Online Hybrid MBA students may also transfer at the beginning of their 2 nd spring or their 3 rd fall semester. Students who have completed more than 144 units are not eligible to transfer. The timing of required curriculum completion, capstone completion, COC access, graduation date, and tuition charges will all be determined by a Student Services advisor based on the actual time of the transfer. Students must accept the conditions of the transfer at the time of the decision. 5.2 Taking on- site classes The Online Hybrid MBA is designed to give students flexibility in completing their MBA degree. To this end, it may be appropriate for a student to take one or more of their classes in the on campus format rather than in the online hybrid format without formally transfering to the on campus program. Students enrolled in the
30 Tepper School of Business Online Hybrid MBA program may take individual courses on campus without a formal transfer to the Fulltime or Part Time On Campus programs provided that there is space available in the on campus course. Students who would like to do so should contact Cassandra Walker, Student Services Coordinator, to discuss the logistics of doing so and to alert the Online Hybrid MBA program of their plans to do so. Online Hybrid Students who anticipate taking most of their remaining courses on campus are expected to formally transfer to an on campus program (Fulltime or Part Time). Registering for individual courses on campus may not be used as a way to circumvent transfer requirements that would normally prohibit such a transfer. 5.3 Leave of Absence A leave of absence (LOA) means that a student leaves the Tepper School of Business/Carnegie Mellon with the firm and stated intention to return. Online Hybrid MBA students may be granted a one- time leave of absence for up to one calendar year (in addition to their three year limit). Students must contact a Student Services academic advisor and complete the necessary paperwork to initiate the leave. Student s campus ID and e- mail accounts are suspended during a leave of absence. Returning from a leave of absence requires the completion of the Return from Leave of Absence form. 5.4 Withdrawal from Program A withdrawal from the Tepper School or the university means to leave with no intention to return at any time.
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Withdrawal from the MBA program is initiated by meeting with a Student Services academic advisor. Campus ID s and e- mail accounts are terminated. 5.5 Academic Review and Academic Probation The Masters Academic Actions Committee (MAAC), composed of Tepper School faculty members (appointed by the senior associate dean for education and the executive director, masters programs), reviews the academic performance of all MBA students at the end of mini 2, mini 4 and for Part Time students (Online Hybrid and On Campus), the end of mini 6. The MAAC s academic actions are communicated to students in writing by the executive director regarding the following outcomes of the scheduled MAAC meetings. Any first year Online Hybrid MBA student with a cumulative GPA less than 5.0 (B average), or a required course GPA of less than 5.0 (B average) at the end of the spring semester (after mini 4) is automatically placed on academic probation. Students on academic probation are required to seek approval from the executive director of student services for all academic activities, including selection of electives, until removed from probation. At the discretion of the executive director, masters programs, students on academic probation may be denied admission to certain courses. Students on academic probation may neither take courses pass/no pass nor register for independent studies. Students on academic probation are automatically removed from probation after the next academic review if both their cumulative
32 Tepper School of Business GPA and their required course GPA is 5.0 (B average). However, co- curricular activities may continue to be restricted until further notice from the executive director, masters programs. First Year Online Hybrid MBA students who do not achieve a 5.0 (B average) in their required courses GPA and a 5.0 (B average) in their cumulative after mini 6 of their first year, may be dismissed from the program. 5.6 Dismissal from Program The Masters Academic Actions Committee (MAAC), composed of Tepper School faculty members (appointed by the senior associate dean for education and the executive director, masters programs) reviews student progress and makes recommendations for dismissal based on established academic policies. First year Online Hybrid MBA students who do not achieve a 5.0 (B average) in their required courses GPA and a 5.0 (B average) in their cumulative after mini 6 of their first year, may be dismissed from the program. Any second year second year Online Hybrid MBA or third year Online Hybrid MBA student with overall GPA that falls below 5.0 (B average) will be subject to an academic review and may be dismissed from the program. First year Online Hybrid MBA students who fail two or more of their required courses in any mini semester or any two courses in any semester, will be subject to an academic review and may be asked to take a leave of absence or be dismissed from the program.
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Students who wish to appeal the dismissal should contact the Tepper School Dean s Office. Students who are dismissed at any time for unsatisfactory academic standing or infraction of regulations will not be refunded tuition or related fees. 5.7 Required Suspension from Program University suspension is a forced, temporary leave from the university. There are three types of suspension for students that apply to both graduate and undergraduate students: Academic suspension is the result of poor academic performance or violation of academic regulations and is imposed by the student'ʹs college or academic department. Disciplinary suspension is the result of serious personal misconduct and is imposed by the dean of student affairs. Administrative suspension is the result of failure to meet university financial obligations or failure to comply with federal, state or local health regulations and is imposed by Enrollment Services. (See Student Accounts Receivable Collection Policy and Procedures for financial obligations. Contact Student Health Services for information about health regulations). This University policy is available online: Withdrawal of a Degree The university reserves the right to withdraw an already- conferred degree, should it discover that either the work upon which the degree was based or the academic records in support of it were falsified.
34 Tepper School of Business SECTION 6: TUITION 6.1 Tuition Requirement Online Hybrid MBA program: candidates must pay tuition for 192 units and will receive their degrees only after meeting all university financial obligations. 6.2 Tuition Payments/Billing/Enrollment The Student Accounts Office in the HUB creates electronic invoices (E- Bills) each month. Once E- Bills are created, a notification is sent to the student'ʹs Andrew e- mail account alerting the student that an electronic invoice is ready to view on Student Information Online (SIO) ( Enrollment is not complete until a student pays the amount due by the due date indicated on the electronic invoice. Past due accounts are subject to a 1.5% penalty charge each month until the balance is paid in full. Students with loans or pending financial aid must complete enrollment before the funds are credited to their account. Students may view electronic invoices and check recent student account activity under the Finances section of Student Information Online at Students with Delinquent Accounts Student accounts are administered by the Student Accounts Office in the HUB. In depth information may be found on their website Students are responsible for paying their student account charges by the stated payment deadline. Please reference the current

These standards of acceptable behavior also extend beyond the campus community into the Internet. This policy applies to all users of Carnegie Mellon computing systems, including students, faculty and staff, and any others granted the use of university computing resources. It applies to the use of all computing facilities owned, leased, operated or contracted by Carnegie Mellon. As used in this policy, terms such as computing, computing/communications systems, computing resources, etc., refer to all computers, communication systems, and peripherals, software, telephones and systems with similar functions, which are owned by Carnegie Mellon, or which utilize Carnegie Mellon infrastructure such as telephone lines or computer networks. The offenses mentioned in this policy range from relatively minor to extremely serious, though even a minor offense may be treated severely if it is repeated or malicious. Certain offenses may also be subject to prosecution under federal, state or local laws. 7.6 Student Grievance Procedures For all grievances, it is important to follow the correct sequence of meetings with the appropriate individuals. These sequences with participants are described in the following material for both academic and non- academic issues. Academic Issues MBA students are urged to discuss initially their concerns directly with the involved parties. If a mutual understanding agreement cannot be reached, the student should bring the issue to the attention of the director or executive director of student services. If the matter remains unresolved, the executive director of the masters programs will be contacted and may request statements or testimony from all parties involved. The grievance then will be reviewed at the second level in an ad hoc committee composed of faculty members from the Masters Academic Actions Committee (MAAC) and the Masters Educational Affairs Committee (MEAC). This ad- hoc committee will evaluate and present its decision in writing to all parties involved. Students who wish to appeal the decision of the Ad Hoc Committee, may appeal the decision in writing to the Dean of the Tepper School of Business. The appeal, as the final level in the
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ Tepper School, must be done in a timely manner (two weeks). Any further appeal is governed by the Carnegie Mellon University regulations for appeals and can be found at: grievance- procedures.html Non- Academic Issues MBA students are encouraged to discuss initially their concerns directly with the engaged party: students, staff or faculty. Students are also encouraged to discuss situations with Tepper School staff, and in particular, the executive director of student services, or the executive director of diversity strategies and programs as the final level in the Tepper School. Students may seek additional support from non- Tepper School resources at the University level. The Graduate Programs Office in Warner Hall, provides support and resources for all Carnegie Mellon graduate students, regardless of college or program. Refer to: services/index.html Appeals Process Academic issues and Non- Academic issues that cannot be resolved through the procedures described above may be appealed to the university level. The appropriate procedure for such appeals may vary depending on the nature of the issue. A Summary of Graduate Student Appeal and Grievance Procedure is available on the Graduate Education website at: grievance- procedures.html. 7.7 Statute of Limitations Tepper School MBA students are expected to complete their required course sequence in the mini semesters they are offered.
44 Tepper School of Business MBA students are also expected to maintain the minimum unit requirements outlined in the course load section of this handbook. Students who cannot maintain the pace of the program are expected to take a leave of absence from the program. The expected leave of absence from the Online Hybrid MBA program is one year. Under extraordinary circumstances such as military or public service, family or parental leave, or temporary disability, the Tepper School may approve a more extended leave of absence and return to the program. However, students who are granted an extended leave of absence may be required to accept new graduation and tuition requirements. Once the time- to- degree limit has lapsed, the student may resume works towards a master s degree only if newly admitted to a currently offered master s degree program under criteria determined by that program. Please refer to the master s student status of limitations at: imitations.html 7.8 Grandfather Policy As the Tepper School updates degree attainment criteria and program policies/protocols; we will communicate explicitly the implication to each Online Hybrid MBA class and explain their responsibility to any new policy. While publicity, especially national and international visibility, is a strategic objective for the school, it is paramount to assure that media opportunities and messages are agreeable to the school s positioning. The director of public relations serves as the primary point- of- contact between news media and the Tepper School community, including faculty, students, administrators and staff. They connect
56 Tepper School of Business journalists with appropriate spokespersons and provide strategic council to students, faculty and staff on all media related matters. If a reporter contacts you directly, it is strongly recommended that you refer to the public relations director, before offering comment. All stakeholders have the right to refuse answering questions from journalists without first seeking counsel from the Tepper School communications staff. The PR director and communications staff will collaborate with stakeholders on publicity preparation, developing talking points and FAQs, interview training and may develop collateral including media advisories, press releases, online news stories, social media messaging, news pitches and multi- media. Persons interested in publicity relating to a program, project, event, or other activity affiliated with the Tepper School should contact the director of public relations, Mark Burd ([email protected]) or the executive director of marketing and communications, Deb Lantz ([email protected]). 8.2 Social Media Before communicating via any social media channel, please consider how your message may be received by external audiences. Always consider social media messages to be public communications, which may be shared beyond an initial target audience. Also consider social media transmissions to be permanent, searchable by important personal audiences such as recruiters and future employers. If you are participating in social media in an official capacity, as a spokesperson of the school, messages must be coordinated with the schools marketing communications web team to assure
Online Hybrid MBA Student Handbook 2014/ naming protocols are met and that there is consistency across channels. Please refer web, interactive and social media questions to Barbara Donehue We are open to opportunities to share student happenings and achievements through social media.
