1 Section III: WASHINGTON, D.C., METROPOLITAN AREA INFORMATION WASHINGTON, D.C., HIGHLIGHTS Washington, D.C., grew up along the banks of the Potomac River, in a central location chosen by George Washington. Using Paris as his inspiration, city designer Pierre Charles L Enfant fashioned the capital city with grand boulevards and ceremonial spaces. 3 TRAVEL within Washington BY PUBLIC TRANSIT metrorail Metrorail, commonly referred to as Metro, is the most popular public transit service. Its five color-coded lines intersect at three major transfer stations in and around downtown. Stations are located near most landmarks, including the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Union Station. The Washington Convention Center is located at the Mt. Vernon Square/ 7th Street-Convention Center station on the green and yellow lines. Metro opens at 5:30 a.m. during the week and 7:00 a.m. on weekends and is open until midnight on weeknights and until 3:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. 5 HOTEL RESERVATION PROCEDURES NAFSA has reserved a variety of hotel rooms at different price levels and amenities in downtown Washington, D.C., for the NAFSA 2008 Annual Conference & Expo. Many hotels are within walking distance of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Hotel rooms booked through the NAFSA 2008 Housing Bureau ensure that NAFSA will meet the required number of reservations for its contract obligations this year. To be eligible for the special NAFSA conference hotel rate, please use one of the reservation methods indicated below to make your hotel reservation. If needed, there is a Hotel Reservation Form on page 54 to submit via fax. (Photocopy form as needed.) Submit one form for each room, even if you are reserving a double, triple, or quad room.
