NUMBER OF FATALITIES CAUSED BY DROWNING DURING Many swimming accidents amongst elders 137 people drowned According to the Swedish Lifesaving Society s, SLS, summary 137 people have lost their lives in drowning accidents during. That is an increase by eight compared to when 129 people drowned. The number of deaths by drowning in is the highest since 2002 when 149 people died as a result of drowning. SLS has a zero vision when it comes to death due by drowning. The last two years has broken a positive trend. During the years 2009 to 2012 the drowning statistic showed less than 100 deaths/year. The amount of drowning accidents amongst children and adolescent under the age of 19 was five in, as an comparison to seven in both and Number of fatalities on average during different decades and 340 (4,4 per inhabitants)* 172 (2,1)* 252 (3,1)* 164 (1,8) 115 (1,3) 137 (1,3) 1960 s 1970 s 1980 s 1990 s 2000 s The amount of drowning fatilities while swimming has increased from 39 in to 49 in. An explanation to this can be due to the lovely summer weather Sweden has had the last two years. Out of the people dying from drowning accidents, close to nine out of ten are male and at a high age. Out of the 137 people during, 97 of them where over the age of 50. Out of these 97, 41 people were over 70 years of age. *Excluding foreign nationals. SLS compiling over the number of drowning fatalities shows a long-term decrease. In the 1990 s report was there an average of 164 deaths per year. The equivalent number for the 2000 s first ten years was an average of 115 deaths/year. (View the chart above.) Number of deaths by drowning page 1/5
Around the end of the 1800s, when the Swedish Lifesaving Society was founded, about 1000 people (,3 per inhabitants) drowned in Sweden each year. During the 1940s the number of fatalities declined to approximately 500/year (7,9 per inh). This thanks to a powerful investment with focus on the general public s Historical development Types of accidents swimming skills. A steady decline has been seen in correlation with increased swimming skills and knowledge of safety around water. Between 2000 and 2009 the average fatalities where 115/year (1,3 per inh). During the years the average was 107/year (1,1 per inh). and In the chart to the right it is shown the number of drowning per type of accident in compared to. On page three there is shown tendencies for the accident-types and the number of fatalities from the last 10 years. Page four contains the age distribution and allocation per month and page five the allocation per county. Swimming accidents The number of fatalities while swimming has increased to 49 people (39 people ). One explanation can be due to the lovely summer weather. The avarege of fatalities in this category in the last 10 years is 26 people per year. Many of the deceased was 50 or older. The reason for the deaths in the older age range is probably due to worse cardio in combination with lacking water knowledge and/or medical conditions. The number of fatalities in connection with leisure boat accidents has decreased from 30 to *. Several of these accidents has happened while fishing. In some cases alcohol can have been an contributing factor to the accident. From experience we know that 6 out of 10 people who is involved in drowning- and leisure boat accidents have been under the influence of alcohol at the time. Even after many years of informing the public to use life-jackets, only 1 out of 10 drowning victims wear this simple and cheap life-insurance at the time of accident. According to previous reserch, at least half of the deceased people would have survived if they had used a life-jacket. The average age among the deceased is high and several of them was over 70 years old. Swimming accidents Ice accidents Ship accidents Ice related accidents Agency and the Swedish Lifesaving Society. This is because SLS 16 people died as an result of ice accidents during reports both drowned as well as thought to have drowned Swedes. That is an increase by 8 compared to. both in Sweden and abroad, and that the Swedish Transport Agency The average number of deaths due to ice also reports about deaths occuring in leisure boats caused by other reasons than drowning, eg. fire or accidents. page 2/5 Other accidents during the past 10 years is 13 deaths/ year. Four people died from travelling on a snowscooter on the ice and went through, and three others by using another type of vehicle. It can be noted that six out these accidents occured during the month of April, when the ice s strength is very doubtful. Other accidents Other accidents include accidents where it has been hard and/or impossible to determine the exact cause of accident, within this category 49 fatalities were recorded in (50 people in ). Falls from jetties and piers are possibly the reasons in these cases. Fishing accidents A total of 12 people have died in connection with fishing from land, boats or on ice during. That is a decrease by four compared to when this number was 16. Out of these deaths in, several of them occured while fishing from a boat without using life-jackets. The average age for these deaths are above 60 years. The average number of deaths due to fishing accidents during the past 10 years is 10 deaths/year. The most common case is when people are fishing in a small boat and/or by themselves without any or inadequate safety equipment. *The result of this summary can differ between the Swedish Transport
number/ year/ type of accident 60-5 Allocation between drowning accidents over the years 200 Swimming Ice accidents Other total amount/year Long-term tendencies It s hard to see any clear tendencies over the last ten year period for different types of accidents. However in total the trend is slowly decreasing. It is clear that the number of pool and beach related accidents are increased during warm and sunny summers as can be seen for the years 2006, and. Other than that, it s hard to see any other clear tendencies regarding this type of accidents. Regarding leisure boats we can t see any clear trend in the number of deaths by drowning either. However, according to retailers, the number of sold leisure boats has increased over the last few years which could indicate that the number of drowned may have decreased overall. This type of accidents are also shown to be affected by the weather but also by the varies in the economy. Regarding ice related accidents the summary indicates a decrease part from a peak in Larger amount of victims in the same accident, and an increase regarding snow-scooters involvement in accidents explains this peak. During the spring of the ice situation were unreliable and this led to accidents claiming the lives of six people just during the month of April. page 3/5 Allocation men - women Out of the total number of deaths in, 85% were men (same as in ). Male leisure activeties with high risk exposure in combination with a greater propensity explaines this distrubution between men and women. This was shown in the attitude surveys conducted by SLS in 2007 and Allocation men/women and 20 men women
3 2 Drowning accidents age allocation and Age allocation SLS has a Zero vision regarding drowning fatalities. During the years 2007 and 2008, the number of drowning fatalities amongst children and adolescent under the age of 19 was five per year, then in 2009 this increased to eight and in 2010 there was another increase to 12 people. In 2011 the number was nine - which is the same as the average for the first 10 years of the st century. In, five children under the age of 19 drowned (seven during ). Type of accident varies. Swimming accidents dominates, however when it comes to the younger children (two under the age of four in ) the reason for accidents are probably lack of supervision. Of the total number of deaths in, 30% were over the age of % over the age of 60 and 71% over the age of 50. The average age of men and women are the same - 54 years. When does accidents occur? Not surprisingly most accidents happens during the summer months when many seeks their way to the sea or lakes for swimming and boat activities. 60% of the total number of accidents occurs between June and August. The majority of swimming and boat accidents occurs in smaller lakes and watercourses. 2 averagely 33/year Drowning accidents amongst children and adolescent under the age of 19. averagely 12/year averagely 16/year averagely 9/year 70 s 80 s 90 s 00 s Drowning accidents amongst children and adolescent under the age of A likely explanation to this is that people feels more secure and bold in smaller lakes than in the open sea and therefore takes more risks. A typical occation here is elderly people that reckons it to be unnecessary to wear life-jackets and/or have company in the boat due to the fact that the lake is so small. 5 3 Allocation between drowning accidents over the years and Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec page 4/
Drowning statistics per county The total number of drowning per year and the average drowned between the years 2005 and also the allocation of the amount of deaths by drowning per county is shown in the chart below. A number of reasons can explain the difference between counties. Tourist intense areas can for example show misleading numbers per inhabitants. The deviations between counties are however too large for excluding difference in attitudes between counties towards risks associated with water and ices. Leisure activities nearby water are further more common in some counties than other. It can be noted that the northern counties indicate for a higher number of drowned in relation to the number of population. A major factor for this is most probably the colder waters of these regions in Sweden. Drowning accidents allocation between Stockholm City and county ,7 0,7 Uppsala ,3 0,8 Södermanland ,1 1,2 Östergötland ,5 0,8 Jönköping ,7 0,8 Kronoberg ,6 1,3 Kalmar ,4 1,7 Gotland ,0 2,3 Blekinge ,3 1,7 Skåne ,5 0,7 Halland ,4 1,0 Göteborg and Bohuslän ,9 1,0 Älvsborg ,5 0,9 Skaraborg ,4 1,0 Värmland ,5 2,3 Örebro ,2 1,0 Västmanland ,3 1,0 Dalarna ,0 1,8 Gävleborg ,5 1,9 Västernorrland ,6 2,0 Jämtland ,6 3,2 Västerbotten ,1 2,0 Norrbotten ,4 2,4 Foreign nationals -* -* -* -* -* -* -* -* -* -* Internationally ,6 Total amount ,3 Average of drowned per year during a 10 year period - 107,1 * Foreign nationals is included in the county allocation since SLS accountings excludes drowning by suicide and drowning caused by crime.
