2 Asbestos What Is It? 1-2 Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral, found in rock form and is mined from the earth similar to iron, lead, and other minerals

3 Asbestos What Is It? 1-3 Asbestos minerals share some common characteristics Naturally occurring from Ores rich in Magnesium, Calcium, Silica, and Iron High tensile strength along the axis of the fiber Chemically inert Non-combustible

4 Asbestos What Is It? 1-4 Asbestos minerals share some common characteristics High electrical resistance and good sound absorbing properties Can be woven into cables, fabrics or other textiles, and also matted into asbestos papers, felts or mats

5 1-5 Background Asbestos is originally a Greek word that means unquenchable, or inextinguishable For hundreds of years asbestos was referred to as a Magic Mineral due to its amazing properties and versatility of use

6 1-6 Background It has yet to be replaced with a material that has the same properties Because of its amazing properties, approximately 36 million metric tons were used worldwide in well over 3000 products between the years 1900 and 1980

11 How is it Extracted? 1-11 Asbestos is a mineral that comes from the earth After it is mined, the ore is milled During the milling process the asbestos fibers are isolated

12 How is it Extracted? 1-12 The milled fibers are mixed with binders, fillers and other materials to make various products The specific use depends on the properties of the specific type of fiber
