3 Physician Shortage Overview Projected national shortage of 200,000 physicians by % of the national physician workforce is age 60 or older. 941,304 Physicians in practice - in the U. S. 42,305 licensed Physicians in Michigan - only 69% are providing patient care. 4 Physician Education and Training PHYSICIAN EDUCATION AND TRAINING More than one-third (39 percent) of the physicians active in Michigan attended a medical school in Michigan (see Exhibit 3). Almost two-thirds (61 percent) completed a residency program in Michigan. 15 percent did a post-residency fellowship in Michigan. 28 percent of Michigan physicians are categorized as an international medical graduate (IMG) and 26 percent of physicians in the United States are IMGs. Michigan is ranked fourth in the nation for the number of students enrolled in a public allopathic or osteopathic medical school for the academic year, while ranking eighth in the nation for population.

5 HRSA Michigan Health Workforce Profile No Population growth is expected between 2000 and Age 65 and over population is expected to grow by 32%. 195 physicians per 100,000 population. National average is Active primary care physicians per 100,000 population. National average is 69 per 100,000. Michigan is likely to face a physician shortage by The severity of this shortage is expected to be about 4,400 physicians, or about 12% of the number of physicians required to meet the forecasted demand for medical services in AAMC, April 2009

6 880 Freshmen Medical Students entered Michigan Medical Schools in the fall of 2009 Michigan State University College of Human Medicine: 110 freshmen, total enrollment 550. Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine: 300 freshmen in 2009, total enrollment is 900+ University of Michigan Medical School: 170 freshmen, total enrollment is 671. Wayne State University Medical School: 300 freshmen,1213 total enrollment. Approximately 4574 residents are training in Michigan.

8 International Medical Graduates: IN American Medicine In 2007, Michigan was ranked sixth in the country for the number of active physicians who graduated from an international medical school. A decrease in the number of IMGs in the United States could affect health care services in vulnerable areas due to our reliance on IMGs to provide care for patients in HPSAs.

The coalition is committed to working together to increase the number of graduate medical education trainees who upon graduation choose to remain in the Capital Area.

20 M-SEARCH and ACE What is M-SEARCH? The M-SEARCH program matches medical students, resident physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants with practice sites and clinical preceptors in underserved communities. Service includes a two to eight week clinical rotation some multidisciplinary as a health care team and can include completion of a community project.

21 M-SEARCH Program Community Examples Provide educational sessions on topics such as: Advanced directives Medicare pharmacy benefit Qualifying for Medicaid Accessing services in the community Assist with community assessments to determine gaps in health coverage or other unmet needs. Plan and implement some type of community awareness/education event Develop a directory of health resources in area

22 M-SEARCH Program Community Examples Patient screenings and education for community members on chronic health concerns, such as diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, etc. Patient education and screenings for at-risk populations, such as the elderly, migrant and seasonal farm workers, or low income individuals. Assist with immunization days and public health screenings. Health promotion and disease prevention activities Provide Lunch and Learn sessions with community groups seniors, new parents, parents with special needs children, etc.
