Philip Jeffery BBC CiN Funding Information April 2010

General Grants Programme There are four general grant deadlines each year: 15 January, 15 April, 15 July, 15 October. Within our general grants programme, you can apply for: NEW!! Small Grants of 10,000 or less per year for up to three years Main Grants over 10,000 per year for up to three years

NEW!! Small Grants Programme A Small Grant is 10,000 or less p.a. for a maximum of three years 4 deadlines and decision dates p.a. (timetable as per Main Grants) Small Grants: making a big difference in your area We want to reach those who may not have considered applying to us before Applying to us is easy to do We are friendly and are here to help

Who Do We Fund? Not for Profit Organisations (include registered charities, voluntary organisations, schools, local authorities, churches, social enterprises, community interest groups, universities etc) BBC Children in Need wants to fund stable, well-managed and effective organisations. Therefore, you will need to ensure that your organisation has the following: sound financial management processes a stable financial position an involved and effective management committee an informed and considered approach to safeguarding children a staff team which is knowledgeable about and able to implement your child protection policy

What Do We Fund? "To positively change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK." Children must be: Aged 18 years and under Living in the UK And meet one of our definitions of disadvantage: - illness, distress, neglect, abuse - any kind of disability - behaviour or psychological difficulties - living in poverty or situations of deprivation

What Don t We Fund? Trips or projects abroad Medical treatment/research Unspecified expenditure Deficit funding or repayment of loans Retrospective funding (projects taking place before the grant award date) Projects unable to start within 12 months of the grant award date Distribution to another/other organisation/s General appeals or endowment funds Relief of statutory responsibility The promotion of religion Projects for pregnancy testing or advice, information or counselling on pregnancy choices Individuals

How much should you apply for? We have no upper or lower limit on grants BUT, we do not make many grants over 100,000 The vast majority of our grants are for much less. The total amount of money requested each year is much more than we have available to give Therefore requests for larger grants are inevitably more competitive.

How to Apply

How to apply TIP! Read the Guidance for Applicants Two stage assessment process Your assessor will contact you to arrange a telephone assessment Complete telephone assessment We will inform you of the decision three months after the application deadline

Application Workshop

Common Reasons for Failure Missing information Insufficient evidence of disadvantage Management capacity Projects where children are not safe from harm Poor planning Not child focused Insufficient disability controls Statutory responsibility

10 Steps to Planning Your Project 1. Identify the need you want to address 2. Identify the differences (outcomes) you want to make for the children and young people 3. Decide what your project will do 4. Ask difficult questions: is this the right project? 5. Target your project

10 Steps to Planning Your Project 6. Involvement of children and young people 7. Plan what skills and resources you need 8. Think about timing 9. Write your project budget 10. Don't forget about monitoring your project You may also find it useful to download our user-friendly Guide to Self Evaluation

Task 1 Identify the need you want to address Describing Disadvantage

Sample Answer 1 Insufficient Focuses on the remoteness of the community Does not tell us how the children and young people are affected by the disadvantage they face Living in a rural community is not sufficient evidence of disadvantage on its own

Sample Answer 2 Stronger Tells us about the area that the young people live in It gives examples of how this impacts on their lives and opportunities The answer would have been even clearer if they had given the percentage or number of children taking part who are disadvantaged

Sample Answer 3 Insufficient Offers only general statistics about the local area Who are the young people that the project will work with? How does the disadvantage affect their lives?

Building a Picture of Disadvantage A Toolkit Facts such as schools data on the number of children and young people receiving Free School Meals Having consultations with children and young people, the local community and partner organisations Running a pilot project Using research from your own or other organisations. Evidence from referring agencies e.g. police, schools, local authority. Anecdotal and narrative evidence can also be useful.

Task 2 Identify the differences (outcomes) you want to make for the children and young people

Task Defining Outcomes Try to pick which of the following BBC Children in Need would accept as an outcome:

Task Project Planning Using the Planning Triangle:

Planning Triangle AIM OUTCOME/DIFFERENCE OUTPUT/ACTIVITY

Scenario The children who will attend our project live on the Anywhere Estate - a community that is among the most deprived in the country and has been designated by the Government as an area for targeted intervention through the 'Community Regeneration' initiative. The effect on the aspirations and attainments of children growing up in this area can be devastating. Many lack a stable home life with positive role models and positive influences. This means they are less likely to stay in school and leave without going into employment or further education. Most lack the opportunity to take part in activities that will enable them to build the confidence and self-esteem necessary to both recognise and develop their abilities and broaden their horizons for later life.

Planning Triangle Example Improve Aspirations OUTCOME/DIFFERENCE OUTPUT/ACTIVITY

Planning Triangle Improve Aspirations Improve school performance Increase young people s self esteem Improve sociability OUTPUT/ACTIVITY

Planning Triangle Improve Aspirations Improve school performance Increase young people s self esteem Improve sociability Provide training for 12 volunteer mentors to work with the young peoples

Task 3: Write your project budget

Questions to ask yourself What will you base your project costs on? Are you applying to any other funders or commissioners to support this project to other? Could any part be a discrete project in its own right? If there is a salary how did you set the salary level?

Remember! BBC Children in Need wants to fund your project to succeed and so is looking for a realistic budget that has been properly costed. We understand that something that is value for money is not always the same thing as the cheapest.

Demonstrate Quality How are children and young people s voices influencing the project proposal? Do you have any quality systems and standards awards? How will this project fit with your organisation s other? Are there any partnership arrangements that will add value to this project?
