Programme Specification Every taught course of study leading to a UAL award is required to have a Programme Specification. This summarises the course aims, learning outcomes, teaching, learning and assessment methods, and course structure. Programme Specifications are developed through course validation and are formally approved by UAL Validation Sub Committee (VSC). They are available to prospective students through the course web page, and must be reviewed on an annual basis to ensure currency of information (for example, following any minor modification or local developments). Awarding Body University of the Arts London (UAL) Teaching Institution London College of Communication Final Award Relevant QAA Benchmark Statement BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design Art and Design Date of production/revision July 2015 Who we are BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design is a course that has emerged from a rich history of graphic design education at LCC: a history that also reflects design nationally and internationally. The College has been the crucible of graphic design education since the early 1960s under internationally renowned practitioners including FHK Henrion, Tom Eckersley and Anthony Froshaug. Our alumni include Harry Beck (designer of the London Underground diagram), Neville Brody, numerous Pentagram partners including Eddie Opara, Claire McManus, Nick Bell, Vault 49, Chrissie Abbott, Jeremy Leslie, Lucy Brown. Our alumni regularly contribute to the course alongside our full time experienced tutors and other specialists and we play host to a broad range of speakers who have included, Erik Speikermann, Morag Myerscough, Phillipe Apeloig, Per Mollerup, Bruce Mau, Rick Poyner, Alice Rawsthorne, Bob Gill and Tim Molloy to name a few. For more information see All the tutors on your course are actively involved in scholarly investigation and/or related professional practice; this supports the Faculty in developing and sustaining strong relationships with industry. These links are further emphasised through our unique Diploma for Professional Studies that enables students to work for a year in industry anywhere in the world, be paid for it and gain an additional qualification. Our students have undertaken placements with Stefan Sagmeister in New York, Rem Koolhaus in Rotterdam, Vince Frost in Sydney, MTV in Mumbai and many more. In addition you will be given the chance to work on live projects with industry. In previous years these have included collaborations with Diabetes UK, BFI, Graphic Thought Facility, Wellcome Trust, Provokateur, Save the Children, Spin, Interbrand, Illy Coffee, the Good Agency, NHS, Moleskine. We also encourage involvement with national and international student competitions such as those run by D&AD, the 1

Design Museum, ISTD, YCN and RSA and have a good record of successful entrants. We are a community of practice with a broad range of students who come from the immediate locality, from all over the UK, EU and also the world. There are up to 60 languages spoken within the College and this makes us truly cosmopolitan. Our students practice graphic design around the world. What we do Graphic Design has changed significantly since the subject, in its present form, was first identified in the mid-20th century. Initially purely print related, the subject has diversified and now covers a multiplicity and ever expanding range of convergent design approaches, applications and media including the digital, illustrative, photographic, virtual, interactive, physical, environmental and social media. The course addresses a growing need for designers to be inventive people with inquiring minds who can identify, analyse and solve graphic communication problems. Designers who thoroughly understand the specialist areas and are able to communicate and engage via popular culture and an increased interest in the arts and social media by integrating contextual studies. Our students are encouraged to be innovative and to initiate change, to integrate practice and theory and work individually and collaboratively. Our students possess technical skills but are not slaves to them, they make connections between disparate activities, are concept driven and capable of working across media. We also encourage our students to understand the complexities of audience and to utilise their studies to plan their future direction whether in work or by continuing their studies. Throughout your time on the course you will be encouraged, through practical and theoretical projects, to acquire a broad range of transferable skills. These skills will enable you to become a versatile design practitioner and life-long learner who can adapt to future developments within the creative industries and the ever-changing world of work. Our graduates may work in a variety of professional contexts: they are designers, of course, but are also teachers and writers and curators and above all, versatile. Facilitated through a diverse range of learning activities, the course will help you to develop a portfolio of practical and theoretical design skills which will enable you to become an autonomous, speculative and adaptable designer confidently working in a range of creative environments. How we do it 2

The course employs a number of different strategies to guide you through it, helping you to achieve its learning outcomes and become a reflective learner. We will introduce you to creative methods, techniques and ways of thinking that draw on staff expertise that encourages independent and entrepreneurial practice all the way through the course. A significant amount of the work that you do will takes place in studios where you may be introduced to key concepts and principles through practical workshops and exercises. You will also be asked to undertake projects designed to explore and expand on the concepts and principles through posed problems and design projects. These will be augmented by lectures and seminars given by studio, contextual studies staff and external visitors that will help you place the subject within practical and theoretical contexts. Research, analysis, evaluation, ideas generation and speculation are fundamental to the subject and consequently feature throughout the projects and assignments whether in practice or in contextual studies units. Critiques will offer you the opportunity to discuss your work with your peers and staff while seminars give smaller groups of students the chance to debate specific topics. We also offer you the chance to work with your peers in other year groups that gives you a valuable insight into what to expect in the following year above. Besides the scheduled teaching you will be expected to work on projects independently in your own time but equally you will work collaboratively with others in your discipline or from other subject specialisms. This reflects the nature of design as a professional activity in which you will be working with others from a multitude of disciplines. Certain aspects of the course offer an experimental space in which to play with processes and concepts in order to push the boundaries of projects. The course fosters an open environment for individuals to create, communicate and play to their strengths and to discover and apply their own visual signature. The course has very good industry links and consequently you will be working on live projects and competitions throughout the course. Regular collaborations on live projects take place with Diabetes UK, BFI, Interbrand, Design Museum, ISTD, YCN, NHS, Moleskine, D&AD. This integrated learning builds on the entrepreneurial success of recent students in addressing issues such as setting up in practice, applying for project funding and professional presentation skills. Skills learning Letterpress, 3D workshops, printmaking and photography work as integral parts of learning and should assist you in realising your solutions to either posed or selfinitiated projects or briefs. Students can select, customise and develop their own skill set. Software and digital skills are primarily delivered by online learning packages and supplemented by support from specialist technicians in the dedicated LCC Digital Hub facility. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of media and to mix and match traditional methods of making with digital and interactive elements. Projects are not media or technology-specific but solution-led. 3

Applications are normally made through UCAS. Applications for this course are assessed on the basis of qualifications, the portfolio and the personal statement. If more information is required, a member of the course team may contact the applicant and in some cases, may request the candidate to attend an interview. Student Selection Criteria / what do we look for? All applications will be considered by the course team and offers will be made based upon the following selection criteria. The team will consider three key elements when making a decision on your suitability to join the course: 1) Firstly they will look at your qualifications (or projected results). 10

2) Secondly, they will review your academic or personal reference. 3) Then they will scrutinise your portfolio and personal statement. The personal statement is a very important part of your application and should demonstrate to the team that you are interested in graphic design and that you have thought very carefully about why you want to study on this course. You should take great care when writing your personal statement to ensure that it is well written, clear and free of any spelling mistakes. It is your biggest chance to impress the team by demonstrating your appreciation of what the course can offer you and how you feel it might help you in the future. It is also an opportunity for you to state what you feel you would bring to the course. Through their personal statement, applicants should show a strong interest in Graphic Design, motivation and a willingness to learn and explore. This can be demonstrated through work experience, studying and personal experience and their ambitions for personal development as a student at the LCC. Portfolio Advice Your portfolio of work must evidence the following: Visual vocabulary: Quality of compositional skills and use of line, shape, form, scale, space, light, colour, texture and time Ideas generation: Quality of ideas and expression of conceptual thinking Research and its application (including sketchbooks) Systematic identification and investigation of appropriate resources Materials and media exploration and experimentation: Experimentation and testing of materials in realisation of concepts Contextual awareness and its influence on the portfolio: Understanding & application subject knowledge and context Interview Advice Occasionally an applicant will be invited for interview who has either requested to discuss their application with the course director or who the course director feels would benefit from discussing their application prior to final consideration. If you are invited for interview you can prepare yourself in advance by thinking of questions that you may have for the course director and also re-familiarising yourself with your UCAS personal statement- from which the course director s questions will probably arise. The interview will be relatively informal and will take place, normally, at the LCC. 11

Students are admitted to the course having fulfilled the necessary entry requirements and on the basis of their potential to benefit from the programme. 12
