5 What is Identity Theft Identity Theft is the criminal act of assuming the identity of another person or business with the expectation of gain. The gain is normally financial. (Chertoff, Assistant US Attorney 2002) The use of a real persons: Name (Person or Business) Social Security Number (Person) Address (Person or Business) Date of Birth (Person) Mother s maiden name (Person) Wells Fargo All Rights Reserved 5
6 What it is not It is not white collar crime White-collar crimes (a term coined by Edwin Sutherland in 1939) or Business crimes are those crimes specifically performed by white collar employees. They include fraud and bankruptcy fraud, bribery, insider trading, embezzlement, computer crime and forgery. It is not identity fraud Identity fraud is the creation of a new identity a new person as opposed to stealing an existing identity. Wells Fargo All Rights Reserved 6

10 Phishing (Definition) Phishing (fish ing) The act of sending an to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The directs the user to visit a web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords, PIN s and credit/debit card, social security, and bank account numbers, that the legitimate organization already has. 11 Phishing Phishing has quickly become a major threat to internet & users How it works: Somebody masquerading as a legitimate business attempting to gather customer identity information via the Internet A spoofed message that appears to be from a legitimate business provides a call to action (via or web link) The user is asked to enter personal information into a bogus Web form The form captures the customer s user name and password or credit card /ATM and PIN The fraudster transfers funds from an online banking account Wells Fargo All Rights Reserved 11
