4 2012 ANNUAL REPORT MOSQUE FOUNDATION 4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Assalamu Alaikum, We would like to thank you greatly for your continuous involvement and generous support of your second home: the Mosque Foundation. As one of the most prominent mosques in Illinois, the Mosque Foundation has established itself as a forerunner of progress and development in the American Muslim landscape, consistently focusing on improvement. It continues to radiate its services to all, addressing the spiritual, religious, and communal needs of its constituents, and it has proven itself as an indisputable and indispensable advocate for Islam in America. The essence of the Mosque Foundation lies in its religious services the core that allows it to flourish and develop. By attempting to address every facet of an American Muslim s life, the Mosque also takes a proactive, comprehensive approach to community service. Serving as the hub for numerous forms of outreach, the Mosque has initiated programs through the Community Center, a sanctuary for many children to play sports and gain spiritual and emotional support; and the Community Food Pantry, where lines of people, regardless of creed, congregate every Monday awaiting sustenance; and its Zakat assistance program which provided 677 needy families and 36 nonprofit organizations with financial assistance totaling close to $1.1M in The Mosque Foundation has garnered attention for its civic involvement and activism on multiple levels. It has initiated and led endeavors toward the realization of tangible goals in the arenas of politics, the environment, and social justice. It plays a pivotal role in encouraging community members to exercise their civic duty as American citizens by voting and taking a dynamic role in the political process.

5 The year 2012 was a remarkable year full of programs and events on a daily basis, not only weekends. Friday Night Live continues to be a successful weekly program, where about 200 youth, between the ages of 13 to 17, attend an innovative and proactive program developed and led by youth themselves under the supervision of our Imams & MFCC Director. AlSiddiq School enrollment has grown to 680 students this year, utilizing Universal and Aqsa schools. Best of all, we have completed our 14month Strategic Planning process for the years , in which we developed our strategic priorities and practical goals to address them. The 90page Strategic Plan document will be our roadmap to serve our community and address the challenges our Americanborn generation faces, and ensure the wellbeing of Muslim families. By implementing the goals and programs, laid out in this plan, we will further institutionalize our operations, and secure structured, continuous adult Islamic education as well as a more effective weekend school. We will also have highly effective human resources and more stable and healthy financial resources. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Mosque Foundation family: the board, staff and volunteers for their time and efforts invested in the process. Also, as we continue to expand to meet our community s current and future needs, we purchased a large property at Harlem and 93 rd St. (9310, 9324 and 9330 S. Harlem Ave). A down payment of $500K has been paid, and the remaining $1M is due in March of This property will be a waqf to serve our community for many years to come, insha Allah. Please examine the details of the following report, and witness the fruits of your active participation and financial support. We owe our financial health and stability to Allah (swt) and then to you, our members and generous supporters, as our total income for 2012 was $3.5 million. Finally, we pray to Allah (swt) to reward you for your trust in our leadership and for making the Mosque Foundation your second home. Wassalamu Alaikum. Hussein Ata President & Chairman of the Board Sh. Jamal Said, Imam & Director MOSQUE FOUNDATION 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 5

6 MOSQUE FOUNDATION 2012 ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL REPORT OF Eid AlFitr Prayer at Toyota Park RELIGIOUS SERVICES The Mosque Foundation provides a welcoming, spiritual environment where both men and women pray with peace of mind and a sense of belonging. In its sacred space, thousands of people learn the morals and ethics of Islam, the needy come to a tangible refuge, and the troubled find personal help. The essence of the Mosque Foundation lies in its religious services the core that allows it to flourish and develop. One might witness the parking lots overflowing with cars, as nearly 500 worshippers attend the five daily prayers, and 4,500 attend the two Jumu a congregational prayers. Ramadan is always a busy month for the community with nightly Taraweeh prayers; fundraising for numerous well reputed humanitarian and relief organizations each night; separate youth programs; Qiyam prayers during the last ten nights; and LailatulalQadr on the 27th night. The Eid alfitr prayer was celebrated at Toyota Park in 2012, with approximately 18,000 in attendance. The Mosque Foundation also offers its worshippers the opportunity to distribute their adahi with ease and convenience during Hajj season through several organizations which distribute the sacrifices to the needy in countries around the world, including the U.S. In 2012, due to inclement weather conditions, two Eid AlAdha prayers were held at the Mosque Foundation to accommodate the large numbers of worshippers.

The Mosque serves as a collector and distributor of Zakat funds, and in 2012, 677 families received financial support from these funds as well as 36 charitable organizations that serve thousands locally and internationally for a total of close to $1.1M throughout the year. The Mosque Foundation Community Food Pantry is still going strong, serving over 300 needy (Muslim and NonMuslim) families per week with supplemental food supplies. The Food Pantry marks its 8th year anniversary of service to the community in March Distribution hours are every Monday, from 10 am to 1 pm. Our pantry has no geographical boundaries; we even serve Iraqi refugees living in Rogers Park and the suburbs of West Chicago. The Food Pantry has approximately 25 volunteers who are dedicated to the smooth and efficient operation of the organization. The Pantry also allows young students to perform their community service hours at our establishment, offering a Muslim outlet to contribute their time for a charitable cause.
