Active E mail Phishing Threat from DISS Erie County has been notified of an active phishing e mail threat targeting government agencies and have received reports of a wellcrafted phishing circulating in the past two weeks at several US universities and in neighboring states. The notifies employees that their electronic W2s are available and encourages them to click to login and view/print their W2s. The link takes them to a landing page which has been made to look like the organization s Human Resources site. Those who fall victim to the phishing may have their personal information compromised, including login, password, tax information, bank account information, personal contact information and benefit information.

*** SCAM ALERT *** For the safety of our members' accounts and financial identity, we want to bring to your attention a recent scam that has affected a few of our members. The members' that contacted us state that they received an automated call on their phone or answering machine saying that one of their debit cards has been compromised and they need to return the call to verify the information on file. They are then required to provide their card number and personal information which leaves them vulnerable to fraud. The Credit Union's Fraud Prevention Department will contact members by phone or text message to verify suspicious activity. However, they will not ask for personal information.

TARGET BREACH SCAM ALERT As many of you are already aware, there has recently been a confirmed breach into the swipe system at Target stores. It has come to our attention that a phishing scam is circulating in relation to this. Scammers are distributing s that appear as though they have come directly from Target regarding a potential compromise on their card. These s will ask you for personal information. This is a scam. While Target may be sending out s regarding the breach, they WILL NOT ask you for any personal information. It is very important to be cautious when reading these types of s. Target will not ask for personal information. The s they are sending out are informative only. Target is offering free credit monitoring & identity theft protection for one year for those who have been affected. For more details, visit creditmonitoring.target.com

We have recently been made aware of a smishing scam that is currently circulating. The text messages state they are from the National Credit Union Association. The cardholders have an important alert on their account and to call Some text messages ask you to call to confirm a debit on a cardholder s account. These text messages are fraudulent. Do not give out any financial information.

The scams which often lure victims to provide credit card numbers have grown in sophistication over the years. One hot spot: websites that offer incredible deals on designer clothes and electronics. Buy there and consumers could be giving their credit card information to fraudsters. One of the more troubling tricks is when a box is actually in the mail after something has been ordered from these sites, yet when the box is opened, you could find an odd item, maybe a toothbrush or a shower cap, instead of that designer deal. As we move into the holiday season, expect even more pitches by , text, and other digital means to encourage consumers to put their purchases on plastic. All of that convenience can create easy pickings for fraudsters. The FICO Falcon Fraud Manager Consortium research indicates that card not present fraud is a fast growing area and now accounts for nearly half of all credit card fraud.

According to an online survey released by Experian ProtectMyID, many consumers aren t doing the basics. The survey, conducted by Harris International, surveyed more than 2,000 consumers and noted the following risky practices: More than 40% of adults who use a smartphone say they rarely or never use a password to unlock it. Will a thief who picks up your phone have easy access to stored credit card information via a retail app? If a phone isn t password protected, the phone thief could have a very fast shopping spree on you, said Becky Frost, senior manager of consumer education for Experian ProtectMyID. About 57% of online shoppers do not always go to sites directly. Instead, they click on links that increase the risk of going to a fraudulent site designed to capture their personal information. Consumers should make sure they are shopping at protected sites. A site is protected by the https address and a lock icon in the web address bar. Beware of hackers, too. Public computers and public Wi Fi areas that aren t protected by a password are not good places to buy holiday items on your credit card. About 29% of adults said they carry their Social Security card or a copy of it in their wallet or purse. Social Security cards should be kept in a secure locked location. DO NOT write your PIN on the back of your debt card or keep that PIN in your wallet with a debt card. Thornton said some consumers say they cannot remember the PIN, but you re making it too easy for crooks to tap into your checking or savings account. Something else to keep in mind a car s glove compartment isn t a secret hiding place. Wallets left in glove compartments account for thousands of credit card thefts each year, said Sukhi Sahni, a spokesperson for Capital One.

We have recently been made aware of a telephone scam that is circulating. The calls are coming from and the recorded message states that the cardholder s card has been suspended and to press 1 to re activate. By pressing 1, you are prompted to enter the entire 16 digit card number. This is a scam. Please do not give out any information.

Update to NCUA Smishing Scam We have recently been made aware that this scam has escalated to telephone calls (Vishing). The automated calls state they are from the National Credit Union Association and the recorded message tells the members their debit cards were deactivated and they need to call a special number to have them reactivated. This is fraudulent. DO NOT give out any personal or financial information.

There is a new scam circulating involving credit approval letters from Union Workers Credit Services. It has been reported that these letters state that you have been preapproved for a $10,000 credit card. Though this may appear legitimate, this is a scam. Please do not give out any personal information.
