Stragglers trickled in and news cameras rolled as the marchers lined up, and organizers with megaphones energized the crowd and brought smiles to shivering cold faces. Amaha Sellassie, a Sinclair Sociology professor, was one of the coordinators of the event and led the march, Chris Hall T H E O FF I C I A L S T U DE N T chanting messages of unity in the front of the crowd marks 35 years since President Ronald Reagan signed into law the bill that made the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, a federal holiday, in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Dr. King, at the time was a controversial figure, and in a way still is. Two American states, Alabama and Mississippi, still observe Confederate General, Robert Lee s birthday simultaneously with Dr. King s birthday. The size of Dayton s march continued to grow as it moved down Third Street, gaining late arriving marchers and a group of over 100 more from Sinclair College. Sinclair student and African American Male Initiative (AAMI) member, Justin Baker was one of N E WS PA PE R O F S I N C L A I R dozens of young black men singing Wade Through the Water while marching behind their AAMI banner. To me this march connects me with those who marched before us to secure the rights and privileges granted to me today, that I take full advantage of, said Baker. Sinclair held an event before the march in the Great Hall in building 12, where President Steven Johnson and Chief Diversity Officer Michael Carter gave speeches to the attendees addressing Dr. King s teachings and putting them to use in today s world....we need to be fit when it comes to the principles and ideals of diversity and inclusion and those things that Martin Luther King lived for, stood for and ultimately died for, MLK Remembrance continued on page 6 C O L L EG E E E R

Policemen and women in dress uniform sprinkled the same crowd that included the friends and family members of Jamarco McShann, the 23 year old black Dayton resident who was shot and killed by two Moraine police officers Oct. 20, McShann s family has since called for a civil rights investigation. The shooting was not captured on body camera or cruiser camera, as Moraine Police do not use either one. McShann s death came while the nation is in discussion and conflict over police brutality, inequality and institutional racism. Ohio itself has in recent years made national headlines with the police shooting deaths of unarmed young black men, John Crawford III, 22, and Tamir Rice, 12. Dayton s marchers continued through the wind and snow down Third Street, then made a right turn on to Main Street to The Dayton Convention Center. Inside the convention center, marchers took seats in rows of bleachers to hear from a variety of speakers. The speakers included Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, an Ohio 10th district congressman, Rep. Michael Turner and professional motivational speaker and youth motivator, David Anthony Johnson. Johnson had the crowds full attention as he donned Dr. King s persona, and recited King s famous I Have a Dream speech. Dayton community and faith based organizations hosted events throughout the rest of the day, including a breakfast, a free screening of Hidden Figures at Neon Movies, a youth celebration, a banquet whose theme was Am I My Brother s Keeper, and a spaghetti dinner. Young children marched with the elderly, white men marched with black women, Korean Americans marched with Muslim Americans and police marched with civilians on this day of inclusion, solidarity and love. They intend to build a raft to leave their home and explore worlds outside of the Destiny The game was originally announced for the Playstation 4 at E3 2013, causing a stir among fans that were excited for the release of another main series installment. However, with the wait finally coming to an end with a solid release date for this year, fans are gearing up for when the game drops in stores. As Kingdom Hearts has always featured worlds that the characters traverse through that are based on Disney films, it comes as no surprise that the latest game would follow suit. So far, worlds for Big Hero 6, Toy Story, and Tangled have been announced to be joining the line-up. The original game was released Islands. However, enemies known as the Heartless attack during the night. Sora receives an item known as the Keyblade that allows him to fend off the Heartless. However, his home ends up destroyed along with Riku and Kairi vanishing. From there, he drifts off into space. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories was released on Nov. 11, 2004 in Japan for the Gameboy Advance. The game falls between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II and is the direct sequel to the original game. While it was the least successful commercially, it received positive reviews and high sales figures. Kingdom Hearts II takes place a year after the events of Chain of Memories and is the next Playstation game in the series. The game begins with a boy named Roxas in Twilight Town. The perspective switches away from Roxas after a man named Axel infiltrates this town with enemies known as Nobodies. Like the other two entries, Kingdom Hearts II received praise along with several rewards such as tying with Resident Evil 4 for Game of the Year according to Famitsu, as well as earning an award for being the Best Sequel. Branching off from Kingdom Hearts II, a wide range of games for the series have been released between then and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts II For example, the DS game Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days focuses more on Roxas as opposed to Sora and his crew. In Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, characters of another Square Enix game called The World Ends With You, appear in a spin-off storyline. Kingdom Hearts is a diverse series with elements that can appeal to younger children as well as adults. For long time fans, the release of the final entry into the Dark Seekers saga will hopefully end up meeting their expectations.

16 Page 16 Winter Wonderland at Sinclair Haley Edwards Reporter As we are now in the third week of class, Sinclair is aware of the struggles many students face when entering campus for the first time, and understands how hard it can be for them to connect with new people in a new environment. In an attempt to help students connect and enrich the college experience Sinclair throws an annual event called Winter Wonderland. Winter Wonderland is held in building 8 s basement stage area Jan. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is completely free. The event takes place every January, each year with a different theme. This year s theme is sports because of Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4, Winter Wonderland is put on by the Student and Community Engagement department and organized by Kates Brommeland, Coordinator of Student Engagement. Brommeland has been in this role for three years and has 11 years of experience at Sinclair. She started in the pre-college program, and then moved into the Coordinator of Student Success position, eventually moving on to run the scholarship program through the completion office. Winter Wonderland offers a wide variety of activities such as: chances to win prizes, giveaways, Sean Kahle Reporter Chase Frantz is a freshman Nursing major new to Sinclair Community College. Although many of Frantz s formative years were spent in Kettering Ohio, he also resided in both Illinois and Hawaii due to the fact that his father works in the Air Force. Many people see Hawaii as the ideal vacation spot, but Frantz has a different outlook: Living in Hawaii for four years showed that it is really just like anywhere else, Frantz said. Although Frantz feels Hawaii to be ordinary after four years of living there, he claims there are special perks. The coolest thing about Hawaii flag football, a movie, hot chocolate, popcorn, games, music and more. Student and Community Engagement teamed up with Sinclair s Marketing Department to promote Winter Wonderland. They use social media, Sinclair V., bulletin boards, and whiteboards to spread word about the event. Advertisements will begin to come out two weeks before the event, so students can make time in their busy schedules to attend. Students can also check the Sinclair website and flyers around school for Sinclair Flickr more up to date information. The Campus Activities Board and other departments pitch in to help fund the event. It is usually a large turnout, as last year s Winter Wonderland brought in around people. Winter Wonderland is a great way for students to integrate themselves into campus and jump start their college experience. Winter Wonderland will also was probably just being able to go to the beach every day. Frantz has also met Dog the Bounty Hunter, who also lived in Hawaii at the time. He was just like he was on TV, loud and obnoxious. Frantz s dad is a nurse in the Air Force, which led to Frantz and his family being relocated to Ohio before Frantz started third grade. Frantz still lives in Ohio in the present day. Frantz played the saxophone in many different bands including the marching band, jazz band, and the wind ensemble at Kettering Fairmont High School. While he primarily plays the alto saxophone, Frantz also plays the baritone saxophone. It taught me that practice means a lot, Frantz said, I met a lot of new people and some new friends through band. Although Frantz has toyed with Tartan News Tartan Spotlight: Chase Frantz have information on other events going on through the semester sponsored by the Student and Community Engagement department. One of these is a series of Ted Talk like presentations called Sinclair Talks. There are 15 total this semester that deal with issues relevant to students varying from help for those with undecided majors to dealing with math anxiety to learning more about the K-9 program in the police academy. There are also special engagement Sinclair Talks. These usually last anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. Special engagement Sinclair Talks have many different perspectives on a topic and are more Sinclair Flickr the idea of Anesthesiology, Psychology and Biology, he has ultimately decided to pursue his degree in Nursing. Frantz started his postsecondary education at Wright State University majoring in Biology, but beginning this semester has decided to attend Sinclair. Sinclair just makes more sense for me financially, Frantz said, I have heard that their Nursing program is a great place to start. Many of Frantz s good friends also attend Sinclair, which was a large contributing factor to his decision. 17 Page 17 Tyler Hilinski Paul Helmers Sports Editor Washington State Cougars quarterback Tyler Hilinski was found dead in his apartment in Pullman, Wash. Tuesday, Jan. 16, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to police. The police responded to the apartment to conduct a wellness check around 4:30 p.m. after Hilinski did not show up for practice. They found Hilinski, 21, dead in the apartment with a rifle and a suicide note next to him. We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Tyler s passing, said Cougars head coach Mike Leach in a statement. He was an incredible young man and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him was better for it. Hilinski played in eight games last season as a redshirt sophomore, completing 130 of 179 passes for 1,176 yards and seven touchdowns. Hilinski also started Washington Kelsey Fitzpatrick Reporter The 2018 Winter Olympics are set to begin Feb. 9 in PyeongChang, South Korea. This is the 22nd edition of the Winter Olympics, with the first being held in 1924 in France. Every other year a pre-decided country hosts the Olympics, summer or winter, inviting nations of the world to participate in various sports to see who is the best. Prizes are awarded as gold, silver or bronze medals. This year there are 102 Sports State s bowl game, the Holiday Bowl, against Michigan State, after normal starter Luke Falk injured his non-throwing wrist. Hilinski went 39 of 50 for 272 yards and two touchdowns. The tragic news today surrounding Tyler Hilinski is devastating to all. Tyler was a tremendous individual, great friend and teammate, and he will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, said interim athletic director John Johnson in a statement last Tuesday. Earlier tonight, the football team was brought together and informed of the tragedy, Johnson said. There, they were met by campus and department counseling and psychological services, including athletics on-staff clinical psychologist and a licensed mental health counselor, along with WSU Athletics medical team. The university will continue to coordinate and provide ongoing counseling care for all student-athletes as long as needed. 18 Page 18 Tartan News Good Samaritan Hospital to shut down Henry Wolski & Cerridwyn Kuykendall Executive Editor/ Associate Editor Premier Health announced the closing of Good Samaritan Hospital near Salem Avenue on Wednesday Jan. 17, potentially dealing a blow to West Dayton residents. The hospital has been in operation since Premier projects the hospital to be closed by the end of It is part of the Premier Health strategic plan. According to Premier, the national and local changes in health care partly lead to the decision to close Good Samaritan. Premier could not justify the cost of maintaining and operating the hospital five miles away from their Miami Valley Hospital location. Premier CEO Mary Boosalis said the cost of keeping the aging facility up to code in the next decade would reach $90 million. For her, closing the hospital was not an easy choice, but a necessary one. On a personal note, I can tell you that this is the most difficult but necessary decision that most of us ever have to make, Boosalis said in an interview with Dayton Daily News. The consequences of inaction are far too great because we know the status quo is unsustainable in this environment. Premier plans to shift the services of Good Samaritan to their Miami Valley location. They say this move will be designed to insure that the staff, and the patients access to care has minimal disruption. The organization s goal is to offer the 1,600 employees of Good Samaritan positions in other areas of the company. Premier ensures that the other satellite hospitals within the organization in Huber Heights and Englewood will not be impacted and will remain open. Current Good Samaritan locations such as Good Samaritan North Health Center, will remain open. These locations will become apart of Miami Valley locations, and undergo some name changes. The new 2020 strategic plan that closed the hospital, was put in place by Premier to better fulfill the needs of the changing health system and the community long term. Premier says the new organization of their services will help them keep pace with national health care policy. They also hope the plan will help them achieve their mission of building healthier communities. The Dayton community has reacted to this news in many ways, some shocked, some angry, but all look toward the needs of those in the area. This is disappointing and bad news for the city, but we ve had many times when companies uprooted and left without any conversation or Daniel Riley services, like Medicare and Medicaid (which make up 79 percent of patients payment) as reasons to shut the location down. Hospitals have cannibalized themselves by overbuilding in the suburbs, and this loss will be hard on West Dayton, which has endured 40 years of disinvestment, Whaley said. West Dayton has especially taken a hit in recent times, following the closure of ALDI, one of the few grocery stores in the area. Another blow was dealt last month when the Germantown Day-Mont Behavioral Health Care location was closed on Dec. 24. I m like in absolute shock cause that s a huge anchor for our community and it literally just seems like the west side is under attack, Amaha Sellassie, a community activist and professor in the Sinclair sociology department said. The west side just keeps getting gutted, and I just don t understand why. Others in the community are worried about the possibility of Daniel Riley disinvestment in the west side. Premier had previously been funding redevelopment projects in the Fairview neighborhood surrounding Good Samaritan. I want to hear Premier s plan to ensure the essential services that Good Samaritan has been providing to west Dayton is not lost, Sellassie said. Closings like this are not unheard of however, as the last major hospital in the city to close its doors was St. Elizabeth Hospital in The location is now home to various healthcare providers and offices. Premier plans to engage in community outreach to best decide what plans will be made to repurpose the Good Samaritan site. They will speak to local leaders, and send surveys to those in the community. The input of the community is not only wanted, It s absolutely critical as we work together to transform Good Samaritan Hospital as we go forward, Boosalis said. concern about the community they were leaving, Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein said. Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley also spoke on the situation; As a nonprofit and community leader, Premier should not just sell the Good Samaritan site to any buyer; it should listen to community input and ensure the site is redeveloped in a beneficial way. 19 Page 19 Tartan Opinion Here s Henry: Beyond the march Henry Wolski Executive Editor The time is always right to do what is right. These were the words in my head last week after I finished the annual march through downtown in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was an honor and a privilege to join around Daytonians in the march. After attending a supporting event held in the Great Hall at Sinclair, about 200 members of the Sinclair community and I joined with the main march on Third Street. We continued on to Main Street to head to the Dayton Convention Center where the rally was being held. We walked with signs in our hands, started chants and spoke words of unity as a police escort helped make our presence known on the cold, snowy streets. It was a sight to behold seeing thousands of people marching together for a common cause. Yet institutional racism is still a significant issue in the U. The justice system is still plagued with controversy due to discrimination. People of color have been locked up in prisons for too long especially due to charges brought from an outdated war on drugs. Then, when they are finally released, they are stripped of their rights and treated like second class citizens. Even now, more than 50 years after the Civil Rights Act was passed, many people still think it s ok to make judgements and discriminate against people based on the color of their skin. On a local level, with the closing of Good Samaritan Hospital looming by the end of the year and the Germantown Day-Mont Behavioral Health Care location closing their doors last month, it seems those in West Dayton are being forgotten when it comes to both their mental and physical health. And while marching is a powerful demonstration of our rights, by itself it does nothing to change these problems. Even though we have a large number of citizens participating in these marches, when it comes time to make a change it s only a small fraction of them that take any action. The rest are silent when those in need cry for help. The purpose of these marches are to honor and pay tribute to the memory and teachings of Dr. King, and inspire change. Yet the only way change is created is from actions. Especially actions taking place from within the corrupt systems. Motivated people have to become police officers that are unbiased and become Chris Hall high ranking officials that hold those in positions of power accountable for their actions. Inspired people wanting to make a difference need to run for political office, while not getting corrupted, and keeping their beliefs close to their roots and their cause. They are the ones who can reform the prison system and the war on drugs. Perhaps most important of all, we need to vote! There were at least 1500 people at the march, and possibly more who stayed home due to the weather, whose votes count. As an example: In the 2016 election, the percentage of people eligible to vote that actually voted was 59.7 percent. That leaves out 40.3 percent that didn t. So doing some quick math, out of the 108,317 adult population of Dayton, there are approximately 43,651 people who can vote that didn t. That is a huge number and is one that can turn a minority into a majority. As the midterm elections inch closer, it is a number that can shift the balance of power in Congress. If enough people with these ideas ran for office and were voted for by all the people who practice Dr. King s message, we would have a shot at the reforms we need to get us closer to racial equality. If we all stand united and use our ability to expunge those in power, we can create the change we seek. Now, unfortunately it isn t that simple. It s still difficult for the underprivileged to obtain an in states where it s a requirement to vote. People are corruptible, be that through money, power or having their mind changed by people close to them. We as human beings also think differently, and none of us 100 percent agree on the same issues. And it is no small task to overthrow the status quo, as those in power will go to desperate lengths to keep themselves on the throne. However we have to believe morality and justice will triumph over corruption. We need to believe that when push comes to shove, good people will do the right thing in the face of adversity. But the first (and maybe hardest) step is to create a battle plan and leap into action. Marches are a great way to express ourselves and air our grievances, but unless we transfer the passion we march with into taking steps to make our city better, it becomes pointless. In the words of Dr. King, We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. Cerridwyn Kuykendall

If you have trouble falling asleep, try doing something relaxing before laying down to sleep. - Keep a journal. Writing down your feelings can help you process them and gain new perspective. I told her how I performed horrible at the exercises and that I don t think I will ever be able to fulfill my dream of being a law enforcement officer. My mother took a moment and said You failed... Good! I was taken aback by this comment for a moment and then retorted with a What!? My mom continued and said Life has never been truly easy for anyone, we all have our crosses and burdens to bear. Every failure has a lesson and it is up to you to learn what that lesson is. So my son the best thing you can do is to fail early, fail often and fail forward. This gave me some time to reflect and think about what she had just said. I then later found out that the speech she had given me was stolen largely from a famous celebrity whose moniker began with Fresh and ended with Prince. But the words still hold true and I have taken the preparations and steps to meet my goal this semester and I encourage you to do the same. The world is a hard place and we can t just lay down whenever something doesn t go the way we want it to! We have to be strong, we have to be unstoppable and we have to learn from our shortcomings. 24 Page 24 Campus Life Quilting the Golden Rule Kali Macklin Reporter From Jan. 24 to Feb. 5 in the loggia level of the library, the Multifaith Campus Ministry office will present a display called Quilting the Golden Rule. The display will allow students to be able to explore other religions around the world. This display was created over a span of five years by Janet Bear McTavish, who was inspired to create the quilts in a vivid dream. She was seeking a way to bring people together in response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. It is a series of 16 quilts representing various traditions and religions around the world, ranging from ancient religions to modern day traditions and humanism. It is centered around the golden rule which can be found in 6 major religions and traditions. It is the teaching that we should treat others the way we would like to be treated. This is the third year Sinclair will be displaying the quilts, which are pixabay normally housed at the Dayton International Peace Museum. McTavish donated the quilts to the museum in Kathy Rowell, Professor of Sociology, brought the exhibit to Sinclair. Larry Lindstrom is the Multifaith Chaplain at Sinclair Community College. Each of those encourages people to take care of each other, said Lindstrom speaking about the quilts. Even though we are all different, and there might be places that we disagree with each other, one thing we can all agree on is that we all ought to treat each other with respect. On Jan. 31 at 12:30 p.m. there will be a presentation on Islam, and how we can move past the stereotypes that surround the religion and its followers. There will be student and faculty representatives that are Islamic, speaking about how the religion has enriched their lives. It is a place where people can explore their differences but also rejoice in the common ground Lindstrom said. To wrap up the quilt display there will be a faith fair on Feb. 5 from 11 Wikimedia a.m. to 1 p.m. with representatives from different religions. This will be an opportunity for faculty and students to not only see the quilts, but mingle with the representatives and further educate themselves on each religion that is depicted on the quilts. There will be representatives from mosques, temples and churches available to speak with. Lindstrom went on to explain the significance of the event; It has been an important part of the campus outreach to the whole community, an invitation for people to look beyond their own traditions and realize that we have a lot we can learn from each other.
