3 Goals: 1. To create and implement a support system to ease the newly hired teacher into the education profession. 2. To introduce inductee to district philosophy, mission, and Code of Ethics and to school's procedures and policies. 3. To refine instructional skills and classroom management skills and to assess his/her professional development. 4. To familiarize inductee with the processes and procedures that lead to permanent certification. 5. To establish training of mentors. Assessment Processes Implementation strategies for assessing the needs of the inductees: 1. Group conference with building principal and mentor teachers to be conducted quarterly to reinforce areas of growth and to provide for the development of an individualized growth and development plan of assistance which will address specific areas of refinement. 2. An approved checklist of activities completed by the inductee. 3. An evaluation conference between inductees, induction coordinator, mentors, and superintendent to evaluate adequacies/shortcomings of the induction program. Mentor Selection The position of mentor teacher will be open to application by existing staff members and a pool of qualified members will be established. The selection of mentor teachers from the pool will be on a rotating basis. The criteria used for selection of mentor teachers by the Induction Council will include the following qualities: 1. Demonstration of mastery of instructional skills and human relation skills 2. Tenure and certification 3. Endorsement by the building principal Activities and Topics Induction Program Topics: I. Mentor Training Program A. Role and responsibilities of mentors in Northern Cambria Induction Plan B. Recommendations and procedures for conferring with the inductee(s) C. Developing an inductee s personal professional development plan II. Orientation Seminar A. philosophy, policies, and procedures B. Building level policies and procedures

4 C. Professionalism D. Beyond mere survival 1. Evaluation methods 2. Record keeping 3. Communication 4. Resources 5. Standardized testing III. Inductee training seminars (Possible topics include): A. Classroom management B. Instructional strategies C. Meeting student needs D. Assessing student progress E. Preparing instructional media F. How to use support personnel G. Test construction H. Motivating students I. Higher cognitive questioning J. Lesson planning K. Lesson design L. The mainstreamed student M. Parent conferences Evaluation and Monitoring Program Evaluation: Informal - conferences with mentor teacher with copy given to department head, supervisor, and mentor.

5 Formal - Summary report of evaluation conference held at year's end for the purpose of outlining and developing a plan of action for improvement, completion of evaluation forms, and log. Participation and Completion The inductee, mentor teacher, and building principal will participate in an exit meeting at the conclusion of the inductee's first year of service. All items below will be reviewed at this exit meeting. The following are maintained in the inductee's personnel file in the district office: 1. Record of observations and/or conferences with mentor teachers or content teachers. 2. Record of formative observations of inductee. 3. An approved checklist of activities completed by the inductee. 4. Completion of Northern Cambria Evaluation of Program - Mentor. 5. Completion of Northern Cambria Evaluation of Program - Inductee 6. Completion of Northern Cambria Log completed by Mentor.
