Man Hyok Kim, Chang Kyu Choi, Dai Youn Cho, and Hye Eun Lee agreed to establish the Midwestern Region and the inaugural meeting was held at Shilla Restaurant on July 10, It was decided that the Midwestern Region would cover the States of Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Ohio, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota, and North Dakota. They accepted the regulations of the Eastern Region, elected Chang Kyu Choi as President, Man Hyok Kim Vice President, Dai Youn Cho National Director and appointed Byung S. Yum as General Secretary. It was decided that the director systems of Eastern and Western Region would be put together and reinforced. In order to open it to many people, a cost of $300 per family was determined. At the meeting, they decided that meetings would be a standing committee and the committee would take charge of all sorts of administration. Thirteen families, including Won Ki Baek, Dai Youn Cho, Chang Kyu Choi, Kwang Sun Choi, Henry Kang, Hyung Joo Kim, Jae Hwi Kim, Kwang Jung Kim, Man Hyok Kim, Hye Eun Lee, Boo Duck Lee, Jung Kee Shin, Byung S. Yum and Keith Soon Kim, President of the Western Region in charge of organization in Midwest region, were in attendance at the inaugural meeting. Since the Eastern Region had selected three students from the Mideast as recipients in 1992, an awards ceremony for them was held in the meeting room of Foster Bank on November 20. With approximately 100 people in attendance, including many new Directors who had promised to participate, Bramm Choi (Southern Illinois U), Jang Heo (U Wisconsin),

3 Midwestern Region and Sun Jung Park (Rush Medical College) were awarded scholarships for the first time in the Midwestern Region After it was inaugurated with 13 families, the number of directors increased to 25 families by the end of December 1992 and advertisements for the first selection of scholarship recipients were run beginning in January Out of 47 applications from 5 states, 10 students were selected as scholarship recipients. Directors Kwang Sun Choi, Hyun Jae Ihm, and Haeun Koh established chair scholarships and Mr. Jae Chul Chang, President of Ribbon Webbing Corporation, pledged to provide scholarships for 3 students every year. The first scholarship award banquet was held at Radisson Hotel Lincolnwood on June 12 with and audience of 220 people. National Chairperson Young Whan Park, Western Region President Keith Soon Kim, and Southern Region President Yong Kun Kim also attended. Recollecting his own childhood, the keynote speaker David Kim, a violinist, emphasized to the students the importance of conversations with their first generation immigrant parents. Hwang, Daniel Ha, June Pomplun, Patricia Art Institute of Chicago Cathedral HS Bradley U U Minnesota 1994 Brochures for the Midwestern Region of the KASF were kept on file at approximately 110 colleges and universities in the Midwest thanks to the preparation of Director Tony Hahm, who had become the second scholarship chairperson. Foster Bank, a Korean bank, promised to donate $5,000 in scholarships for five high school students. The 2nd annual scholarship award banquet was held at Radisson Hotel Lincolnwood on June 14, Over 200 people, including 16 National Directors who were there to attend National Board meeting, participated and 17 students were awarded scholarships. 241

The 3rd annual scholarship award banquet was held on June 17 with over 200 guests and friends. The keynote speaker Keith Soon Kim, Chairperson Scholarship Recipients (1995) of the National board, who gave speech titled Leadership Vision 2000, and violinist Jennifer Koh, and soprano Yoonhee Kim performed at the banquet. 19 students selected from 75 applicants were awarded scholarships. The hole sponsors of the day were Hwa Young Kang, Byung S. Yum, Hoon Chang, Keun Moo Lee, Jang Sun Choi, Samuel Kim, Won Kyung Cho, Chang Kyu Choi, Dong Gyun Park, Dai Youn Cho, Il Chu Choi, Sung Sun Cho, Jin Hyun Song, Jung Kyu Park, and Kew Sun Chai. Forty two players participated and $3,200 was raised. A Chair Scholarship for nursing students was established by Kevin Keun Moo Lee in honor of the 84th birthday of his mother Myung Soon Lee, who had served as a nurse her entire life. This brought the total number of chair scholarships to four from the region. Three new designated scholarships were established: one for theology by the Fellowship Church, one for general studies by Peterson Bank, and one by Ribbon Webbing Corp The 4th annual scholarship award banquet was held at North shore Hilton on June 15. The keynote speaker Jinny Oh, Fox News(Ch.32) field producer, gave a speech titled Community investment for the Future. Hye Eun Kim, Kwang Sun Choi, Hyun Jae Ihm, and Myung Soon Lee who had established Chair Scholarships, and the President of Foster Bank, who established Designated Scholarships, were recognized. 22 students were awarded scholarships. Peterson Bank, Foster Bank, Kwang Sun Choi, Kew Sun Chai, Il Chu Choi, Dai Youn Cho, Keun Moo Lee, Bong Hyun Kim, Chang Bok Lee, Byung Kwan Min, Soo In Lee, and Daeho Club participated as Hole Sponsors and $3,915 was raised. At the meeting, Mr. Choi was elected to be the second President, succeeding President Chang Kyu Choi. Chang Bok Lee and Tony Hahm were elected as Vice Presidents, Sa Jik Kim as General Secretary, Won Kyung Cho as Recording Secretary, Jong Dae Yang as Treasurer, Tony S.T. Hahm as Scholarship Chairperson, Henry Kang as Fundraising Chairperson, Man Hyok Kim, Charles Kook J. Oh, and Keun Moo Lee as Nominating Chairpersons, Chang Kyu Choi as History Chairperson, Jae Eun Han and Kwang Chung Kim as Auditors, and Dai Toun Cho, Chang Kyu Choi, Bong Hyun Kim, and Man Hyok Kim as Advisors. The new officers appointed Mr. & Mrs. Dong Kyu Lee, Mr. & Mrs. Jiwhey Chung, Mr. & Mrs. Byung In Suh, Mr. & Mrs. Man Yong Choi, Mr. & Mrs. Youk Rin Lee, Mr. & Mrs. Kee Man Chang, Mr. & Mrs. Kwang Dong Jo, and Mr. & Mrs. Keun Sik Lim as new directors. The first event of the new officers was a fundraising bowling tournament between churches and it was held at Waveland Bowling Lanes on January teams participated and 90 people, including teh Directors and friends, observed. 8 KASF 40 Years pennant, specially made in Seoul, Korea, went to the team from Bethesda Church. This event raised $1,000. Two golf tournament fundraisers were held. The first tournament, which was held on May 7, at the Brighten Dale Golf Club with 54 players raised $2,500. The second tournament was held on August 27 at the Brighten Dale Golf Club with 43 golfers and raised $3,000 with the help of 16 holesponsors. The board of directors recognized the Directors and organizations who donated more than $3,000 since the inception of the Midwestern Region, such as the Hebron Church, the Holiness Church of Chicago, Korean Air, Koran American Veterans Association, Manufacturer s Bank, Jong Keun Ahn, Soo In Lee, Dai Youn Cho, Kee Nam Chang, and Chang Kyu Choi. The 5 th annual scholarship award banquet was held at North Shore Doubletree Hotel on September 13 and awarded 36 students, 13 more students than the previous year. Former President Chang Kyu Choi, who had founded and served the Midwestern Region for 4 years, was presented with a medal of appreciation. The keynote speaker of the day was Dr. Young Woo Kang who was the first blind Korean to earn a doctorate. A newsletter covering various activities of the region was published twice and the number of directors increased from 13 families at the inception of the Midwestern Region to 54 families. 10 KASF 40 Years 1998 The bowling and golf tournament fundraisers were again successfully organized and raised more than $7,000 combined. Ten new designated scholarships were established in Scholarship Recipients (1998) The 6 th annual scholarship award banquet was held on August 22 at the Double Tee Hotel in Skokie and Dr. Yoon Il Chang of Argonne National Laboratory delivered a very inspiring speech. They used for the entire application process with great success at saving costs. The 7th annual scholarship award banquet was held on August 21 at the North Shore Double Tree Hotel in Skokie. A professional TV producer, Ms. Sunmee Choi, emceed and the keynote speaker Mrs. Jae Choi-Kim, past president of Korean American Citizens Coalition, delivered a speech on the urgent need for leadership in the Korean community. 42 students were awarded scholarships and 2 students attended the leadership conference. Director Kew Sun Chai established new Chair Scholarships with donation of $150,000 and 6 new designated scholarships were added. An unexpected, noteworthy contribution in the amount of $5,000 came from Choongchung-Do Association, a Korean community organization. The award banquet was held on August 11 at the Radisson Hotel in Lincolnwood. The keynote speaker was Rev. Joshua Kang of a rapidly growing second generation church. The number of scholarship recipients was increased by 20% over the previous year to 54 students. There were two pairs of twin brothers and sisters among the recipients.
