1 Welcome to the Master of Teaching Early Childhood Mid-Year Intake July, 2016 Enrolment and Orientation Information Semester 2 classes commence Monday 18 th July
2 ORIENTATION Your attendance at the orientation is required. Save the date: Compulsory Teacher Education Induction: Friday 15 July am-1.00pm Please for further details and confirmation This booklet provides information for mid-year entrants into the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) program. Please read it carefully as it contains important information about your enrolment and course. Please contact the Course Coordinators (phone ), if you have any queries or require assistance. Academic Conduct Essentials (ACE) All students enrolling at UWA for the first time at any level are required to complete the online unit Academic Conduct Essentials, which addresses issues of academic conduct including plagiarism, ethical scholarship and academic integrity. This short compulsory unit, is not onerous, complements UWA s Academic Conduct Guidelines, and requires approximately 30 minutes to complete through the LMS (Learning Management System). The results for this work ( Ungraded Pass or Not Completed ) will be recorded on your statement of academic record. This should be completed within the first 10 weeks of the course. COURSE UNIT INFORMATION The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) comprises core units, which are highly integrated. This means that if you wish to enrol part-time, some units are best undertaken in the first year and others must be taken concurrently or before undertaking Professional Practice units. Please do not deviate from the recommended part-time pathway without first obtaining permission from the course coordinator. The four semesters of the course (generally two years of full time study) represent key stepping-stones in a sequenced developmental journey of Orientation, Exploration, Immersion and Reflection and Intervention towards understanding and skills commensurate with Graduate Teacher competencies. There are common units within the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary) course. Such units include differentiated workshops and assignments according to the specialisation. This structure recognises the need for greater communication between 1
3 professionals across all levels of education, the wide developmental spread that occurs in any classroom and the need to support and extend all pupils. COURSE STRUCTURE There are 16 units, generally taken over 4 semesters of study for the course code EDUC5500 Professional Practice B is worth 12 points (equivalent to 2 units). 7 INFORMATION Handbook You will be provided with a Pre-service Teacher Course Information Booklet, which details the structure, organisation and content of the Master of Teaching course. 2. Professional Practice Placement The Master of Teaching Early Childhood specialisation is a pre-service professional course in which the integration of theory and practice is the major organising principle. It is a Masters level course, hence a research project is taken in the final semester and critical engagement with research takes place throughout the course. Professional Practice (Centre based education and care settings and school experience) is the focus of the course; other components have been designed to relate to Professional Practice and to complement and interrelate the contribution that each makes to the course as a whole. Professional Practice forms a substantive element of the course in all semesters. Please note: The photo taken for your Campus Card is also used to send to a Center based Education and Care setting and School prior to Professional Placement. Please be mindful of this when presenting yourself for your photo. In Semester , Professional Practice will comprise 3 distributed days (one or two days a week for 2 or 3 weeks) followed by a 3-week block. This is followed by a further 2 distributed days and then a three-week block in Semester 2. Students are encouraged to engage in voluntary work in schools throughout the time of their course. Semester 3 provides the largest professional practice placement with five distributed days (one day a week) followed by a six-week block. Semester 4 provides opportunities for students to reflect upon and refine teaching skills with targeted interventions that include a further period of professional practice. In addition, many of other units in the course also include authentic school experiences that range from observation to teamteaching in specific learning areas. Over the duration of the course you will engage with a wide range of Early Childhood educational settings. 3. Professional Practice Placement Form As a 2016 mid-year entrant, you will not be enrolling in a professional practice unit until At the beginning of 2016, to enable us to organise the teaching practice placements, you will need to complete the enclosed Professional Practice Placement form and return it to the Graduate School of Education. This information will be used to assist us in finding the most suitable practice placement for you. If you have any questions, please contact the Professional Practice Office. Please ensure that you supply correct details as it will not be possible to change your placement in a school once confirmed. 6

Teachers Language and Numeracy Competency The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) require pre-service teachers to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills within the top 30% of the Australian population. This is a result of professional and community concerns about unsatisfactory levels of teacher literacy and numeracy competency. In 2016, an online test that all pre-service teachers in Australia must pass before graduating from their teacher education course will become available. To help them prepare for this national test, pre-service teachers will sit some short UWA literacy assessments on orientation day. These will involve the assessment of spelling and grammar, as well as essay writing using appropriate text structure and vocabulary. To assist you in preparing for this, we recommend that you purchase the following book and read it before the orientation day: Faigley, L. (2012). The Little Penguin Handbook, Pearson, Australia. (Available from the UWA bookshop, packaged version of text includes online access code to My Writing Lab Global, where you can self-test and access online resources). In addition to the tests mentioned above, a high standard of literacy must be demonstrated in all assignments and on professional practice. Pre-service teachers who do not perform at a satisfactory level in the GSE tests will not be placed on professional practice. Oral language standards will be assessed in several units through student presentations. You will be required to sit a UWA numeracy test in week 3 or 4 of Semester 1. Pre-service teachers who do not meet the minimum standard will enrol in the Maths Online online resources in order to improve their skills and will be required to provide evidence of this improvement at the beginning of the second year of their studies (date to be advised), in the format of end-of-topic tests from Maths Online. More information about this will be provided at orientation. The purpose of the UWA tests is to prepare you for the national literacy and numeracy test. It is recommended that pre-service teachers experiencing serious difficulties with their literacy should seek help to improve their reading and writing skills through Student Support Services (telephone: or online: 6. Computer Labs There is a computer lab in the Education building and computers in the EDFAA library. You will be provided with a UWA pheme account and a UWA address. You are expected to check your UWA address daily. 8
