2 Business opportunities/ job creation While the project objective originally was to provide cleaner and cheaper ferry service (to and from the island of Ærø), local job creation (business opportunities for small and medium sized companies) has also become an aim for the project

7 Electric ferry concept - Energy efficient Approx. 50 % energy saving achieved by energy efficient design, lightweight materials and smaller ferry - Emission free Powered by electricity from local wind turbines - Higher frequency in departures Due to the smaller sized ferry, it takes more than one ferry to replace one traditionel ferry. - Lower cost of energy if tax exemption equal to fuel - Lower overall operating cost The design allows for reduced crew size in off peak periods with fewer passengers - Comparable in cost price to traditionel ferry boats

11 Challenges 1. Design of a ferry with extremely low water resistance, also at restricted draughts and in channels. 2. Battery technology. Can batteries survive a full working day and a long lifetime of recharges (at least years)? 3. Charging. Can batteries be charged fast enough at berth? Can high peak charging effects be distributed to the ferries for short port stays? 4. Approvals of the introduction of carbon composites in the superstructure (in order to save weight to compensate for the weight of the battery) 5. Crew competences. Which crew competences are required? Are the engineers needed? 6. Taxation of electricity used to power ferries. Equal taxation for fossil fuels and electricity?

13 Business opportunities Business opportunities for innovators and producers of new technologies which meets future requirements and demands for CO2 reductions and less polluting vessels - And for small and medium-sized companies (ship designers, shipyards, sub suppliers etc.) especially if they are open to new ideas, technologies and materials
