Page 47 FOCUS ADULT UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM The FOCUS Adult Undergraduate program at Northwestern offers a variety of options in an accelerated format designed for busy, working adults to complete their Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Students complete a degree program by taking one course at a time and by meeting one night per week on-site, online, or in a blended cohort structure. Depending on the number of credits transferred into the program, the A.A. coursework takes approximately 32 months to complete and most of the B.S. major coursework takes approximately months to complete except for the B.S. major in Accounting which takes months to complete. 3 COLLEGE OF ADULT & GRADUATE STUDIES CATALOG 41 Accounting The Bachelor of Science in Accounting provides students with a conceptual knowledge of accounting and develops specialized skills in financial accounting, managerial accounting, and information systems while learning to integrate a Christian perspective into the business setting. Students will also develop specialized learning in taxation, auditing, non-profit, and governmental accounting. This program will prepare students to serve in careers as corporate controllers, financial officers, internal auditors, governmental accountants, or accountants in charitable organizations. This program meets the education requirements to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination. The State of Minnesota requires the completion of 150 credits to be licensed as a CPA; however, a 150-credit major is not required. PAUL CATALOG Communication Studies The Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies provides students with a conceptual knowledge of communication and develops skills in thinking, writing, speaking, conducting research, technology, conflict resolution, mediation, and public relations. This degree promotes the effective and ethical practice of a Christian communicator in a civil and democratic society. Communication studies is an academic field that focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, cultures, channels, and media. The program offers an overview of health psychology as well as specific courses (see required concentration courses listed below) in preparation for the Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) knowledge exam (see the BACB website at bacb.com for additional requirements). Applications of applied behavior analysis include building the skills of children in school settings; enhancing the development, abilities, and choices of children and adults with different kinds of disabilities; and enhancing the performance and satisfaction of employees in organizations and businesses. The program is designed for students who are interested in the helping professions and work in residential care, hospitals, community education programs, and behavior intervention and change programs. Whether called to be in a church, non-profit, or cross-cultural situation, students explore the knowledge, skills, and personal values that will prepare them biblically, relationally, practically, and incarnationally for service in God s kingdom work. Students are expected to be embedded in ministry during this program. Ministry learning and reflections are compiled throughout the program in the student s portfolio. The capstone course will synthesize all coursework and portfolio elements into a final philosophy of ministry document. The program is designed to prepare students for graduate study in psychology, entry-level positions in the helping professions, or careers requiring a psychology background. Biblical coursework enables students to apply psychological principles from a Christian perspective. Students have the option of taking the PYC/HMS-prefix courses in the concentration as part of their major, minor, or as electives for graduate credit (graduate policies apply for tuition charges and graduation requirements), which may be applied to the Master or Arts in Human Services degree.
