NATIONAL REPERTORY ORCHESTRA Fellowship Information Nurturing the Future of Music Carl Topilow, Music Director
LETTER FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: As I look back on my many years with the National Repertory Orchestra, my greatest satisfaction is to see the role that the NRO has had in helping to shape our musicians lives and careers. Playing in the NRO presents a real taste of what it is to be a member of a full time professional orchestra. In the midst of an NRO season, musicians are often caught up in the rapid pace of preparing concerts, but look back at season s end with great pride and admiration in what they have accomplished. Our musicians are all highly motivated, supportive of one another, and proud to be part of a spirited and unified team whose goal is to present dynamic and electrifying performances. NRO members have a bond that lasts for a lifetime, and our musicians feel part of a special legacy. Additionally, our members are appreciated by our staff, our board, and the Breckenridge community. Our community link program makes our musicians feel at home, providing outdoor activities, additional practice sites when needed, and wonderful home cooked meals. Although I ve been conductor of the NRO for a long time, I greet each summer with the enthusiasm and anticipation to have the chance to make music with an ensemble of dedicated and talented musicians. Whether our musicians win positions with professional orchestras, become teachers, orchestra administrators, or pursue non-musical professions, it is always my fervent hope that everyone s NRO experience is a positive one that has far reaching consequences and rewards. Carl Topilow, Music Director
ABOUT THE NATIONAL REPERTORY ORCHESTRA: MISSION STATEMENT The National Repertory Orchestra is a preeminent intensive fellowship that equips young musicians for orchestral music careers while providing the highest-level of musical experience for all stakeholders. We pride ourselves on Nurturing the Future of Music! EIGHT-WEEK SEASON The NRO performs two full orchestral concerts each week in Breckenridge s beautiful Riverwalk Center during the eight-weeks the orchestra is in residence. These performances also include several runout engagements in the area, including a concert at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail. Vail s Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival hosts summer residencies for the New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, and Philadelphia Orchestras and members of these orchestras participate as master class clinicians with the NRO. In addition to working with Maestro Topilow, NRO members work with outstanding guest conductors, participate in seminars with inspiring clinicians, and perform in chamber ensembles with their peers through our community engagement program. LIFE IN BRECKENRIDGE, COLORADO The National Repertory Orchestra is honored to reside in the beautiful and historic ski town of Breckenridge, Colorado. Beyond the picturesque scenery, incredible and numerous outdoor activities, and lively arts scene, we are fortunate to have an involved and generous community that avidly supports the NRO s mission. For more information on life in Breckenridge please visit
FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES: GUEST CONDUCTORS Prominent guest conductors are engaged each year from around the United States and abroad to work with NRO musicians. Each summer typically engages four guests for masterworks concerts. SEMINARS In addition to providing an intense and rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule, the NRO provides additional educational experiences. The NRO integrates a series of Career Development Seminars that deal with categories ranging from the philosophical to nuts and bolts survival information. These presentations utilize the expertise of special guests as well as professionals involved with the NRO. Seminar topics will include but are not limited to: Musician Health and Injury Prevention Career and Financial Planning Music Therapy and Outreach Musicians as Effective Advocates & Educators in Outreach Situations SOLO PERFORMANCES As part of the NRO s program, Music Director Carl Topilow features NRO musicians in solo performances with the orchestra throughout the season. AUDITION OPPORTUNITIES Representatives from various orchestras regularly visit Breckenridge during the summer offering opportunities for NRO musicians to audition. In addition members of the orchestra take part in mock auditions throughout the duration of the summer.
MASTER CLASSES The NRO engages several clinicians throughout the summer to conduct master classes and workshops. NRO musicians work with outstanding instrumentalists in traditional master classes and sectionals. These clinicians provide insight into the daily life of professional orchestral musicians as well as performance insights into the repertoire being performed. OUTREACH/COMMUNITY EVENTS As part of the NRO experience each musician participates in outreach and community engagement services. These events are highly diverse and offer NRO musicians the opportunity to perform chamber music with their colleagues. The events are often in the form of donor events, marketing events, educational concerts, public chamber concerts, or music therapy outreaches. COMMUNITY LINK The Community Link program links musicians with several families in the Breckenridge community. Musicians do NOT live with the family but rather the family serves as a helpful resource and a home away from home. The Community Link families create an incredible bond between the NRO and the Town of Breckenridge. Host families frequently organize hikes, dinners, and a myriad of other opportunities for their assigned musicians and interns. At the end of the summer, community link opportunities are often a significant highlight of the NRO experience.
FELLOWSHIP BENEFITS: HOUSING Shared ski resort style accommodations are provided for each Fellow. Accommodations are secured through individual housing companies in Breckenridge. Each condo is equipped with on-site parking, TV, linens, and located near free public transportation. A $100 housing deposit is due at the beginning of the festival and is held until departure. Once the condo has been inspected and is considered to be in a satisfactory state, the housing deposit will be returned. For examples of typical NRO housing, please visit STIPEND NRO Fellows receive a grocery allowance during the eight-week summer season. This stipend is split into two payments, one at the beginning of the festival and one at the beginning of the fifth week. The total allowance is $425. WORK STUDY OPPORTUNITIES Fellows who are interested in work study opportunities while attending the festival may apply to work either with the library or production staff. Space is limited for work study opportunities and is based on a first come first served basis. These opportunities offer hands on experience in the production of a summer festival. The typical stipend received for a work study position is $250. TIME-OFF POLICY Professional orchestras throughout the country often hold national auditions during the summer months. NRO understands and encourages the need to attend these auditions. In order to receive time off, requests must be submitted two weeks prior to attending the festival. Each request is subject to approval by the Music Director.
