3 1.1What is SEO? SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is the process of getting traffic from the free, organic, editorial or natural listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. Payment isn t involved, as it is with paid search ads (Pay per click or PPC). The websites shown in the red boxes are paid listings, which is also called Pay Per Click or PPC. Whereas the websites shown within the blue boxes are known as Search Engine Optimization or SEO. In a nutshell, when we do SEO we are actually optimizing our webpage to increase the chances of our website ranking higher in the search engine results, which will in return bring us search traffic to generate leads. The main objective of doing SEO is to get your website listed for free on the first page of the search results, rather than having to pay for your website to be listed using PPC or Pay Per Click. However, SEO will require us to put in some effort in order to rank on the first page of the search results. 3

4 What Do We Need To Do In Order To Search Engine Optimize Our Website? In order to do SEO, there are 2 main tasks that we will have to perform, on page SEO and off page SEO. On Page SEO To do on page SEO is to simply write and create your content using specific headings, font styles and mentioning of the keywords that you want to rank on the search engine. For example if I want to rank for the keyword Singapore properties, I will have to mention Singapore properties when writing my content for the website and also at the same time using specific headings and font styles to decorate the keyword in my write up. Another very important rule we must adhere to when doing on page SEO is to make sure that our content is 100% original. Search engines like Google and Yahoo do not like plagiarism, so we will have to write contents that are 100% original in order to do well in SEO. On page SEO in a nutshell: 1. Unique contents 2. Using specific formats when writing our content for our website. (e.g Heading 1, Heading 2, bold, italice etc) 3. Mentioning of keyword in content. Now lets get started on doing our on page SEO. 4

5 Doing On Page SEO Lets first install Speedrealtor SEO plugin onto our website to help with our on page SEO. Go to your Toolbar => Downloads => Themes & Plugins and download the Speedrealtor SEO Tool. Click on Plugins => Add 5

6 Select upload => Browse and select the plugin SpeedrealtorSEO.zip and install into your website. Once done, click on activate Next, you will notice a new tab titled SpeedRealtor SEO, click on the tab 6

7 Now enter in an and also the password 1234 and save changes. This will activate the Speedrealtor SEO software. Next, select Automatic Decoration 7

8 Change the following settings according to the picture below Once done, scroll down and Save Changes 8

9 Next, we will install another plugin called Simple Meta Tag to help with our SEO. Go to Plugins => Add New and search for Simple Meta Tag and install and activate the plugin. Once done, we will proceed to the page or post that we want to do SEO for. You will see a score on the right side of your page. This software will help tabulate your SEO score for the particular page. 9

10 Next you will see the criteria that you will need to fufill in order to achieve a high SEO score. Click on the different tabs (Title, URL, Meta, Heading and Content) to check what are the criterias you will need to fulfill. Now let us run through each of the criteria that you have to fulfill in order to achieve a good on page SEO score. 10

11 Title To fulfill the title criterias, your title must first contain the keyword. The title field is shown in the picture below and the criterias needed is shown on the Speedrealtor SEO under the Title tab. URL Next, click on the url tab to view the criteria. If your domain name is the keyword that you would want to target, then you do not need to change the URL. But if this criteria is not fulfill, you will need to add in the keyword into the URL. To edit the URL, click on the yellow portion and edit the URL accordingly. 11

13 Meta Next, we will try to fulfill the Meta criteria. Scroll down the page until you see the Simple Meta Tags field. Meta tags are hidden behind as a HTML code on your website. These meta tags are use by search engine to determine what your webpage is about. Meta Title: Fill in this field using your page title Meta Description: You can copy and paste a small paragraph from your content above and paste into the meta description field Meta Keyword: Enter in your keyword in this field 13

14 Heading Next, we will try to meet the criteria for the headings. Headings are head title for your contents. To change the heading, you can highlight the keywords and then select the heading button to change your keyword into the right heading. This will change the highlighted text into the different headings. Content On the last tab, we have the criteria that we need to fulfill for the contents. Let us run through each of the criteria and what do we need to do. 14

16 Content contains at least 500 words Your content must be at least 500 words or more. However, we recommend to have at least 500 words in your content. Content has % keyword density Google also track how many time a particular keyword is mentioned in your content. For example, if you are targeting Singapore properties and your content has 100 words, 2% to 5.5% of the 100 word content must be the keyword Singapore Properties. Content contain keyword in the first words Your keyword should appear in the first words of your content. It is also recommended to start your content with your keyword. Content contains at least one image with keyword in ALT attribute To fulfill this criteria, we need to insert one image into the content and the ALT attribute contains the keyword. 16

18 Content contains at least one bold keyword We need to bold one of the keyword in the content Content contains at least one italicized keyword We need to italicized one keyword in the content Content contains at least one underlined keyword We need to underline one keyword within the content Content contains keyword in anchor text of at least one external link An external link is a link which brings us from our website to another external website. To create an external link with our keyword, first highlight your keyword and click on the link logo. Next, a window will pop-up and key in the address of the external website in the URL field. This is the address that you want to direct the visitor to when they click on your link. Once done, click on add link. 18

19 This is how a link look like and we have just created an external link. Content contains keyword in anchor text of at least one internal link An internal link is a link that direct us to another page that is within our own website. To create an internal, repeat the same process as when we created the external links but this time around, use the URL of a page within your own website. Content contains keyword in the last words Lastly, we must have the keyword in the last 50 to 100 words of your content. Once you have fulfill the criterias, remember to update the page or post and the Speedrealtor SEO plugin will tabulate a SEO score for your page. The higher your SEO score, the easier it is for you to rank on Google for your keyword! 19

20 Off page SEO After we have done our on page SEO, we can then start doing off page SEO. As for off page SEO, it involves a process call Link building. On the Internet, a link from one website to another website is considered a vote. If website A has a link that brings us to website B, website A is actually recommending or voting website B as a credible source for a particular project. These votes or links are very important as it helps search engines such as Google to determine how credible a website is. In order to beat the competition ahead of you in search engine ranking, we need to get more backlinks or votes than the website that is ahead of you. And to do so, we will need to do a little bit of Spying on our competitors to find out how much backlinks they have. Off page SEO in a nutshell: 1. Backlinks from other websites pointing to our website is consider a vote of credibility by search engines. 2. Backlinks are use by search engine such as Google to determine how credible a website is for a particular keyword or subject. The more credible a website is, the higher it will rank in the search engine listing. 3. To do off page SEO is basically to get backlinks from other websites to our website. 4. To beat our competitors that is ranking higher than us, we need to get more backlinks than them. Lets get started on our off page SEO! 20

21 Installing Market Samurai Firstly we will need to spy on our competitors and find out how much backlinks they have. To make the process easier, we will install a software call Market Samurai. Market Samurai will help us generate data such as the amount of backlinks that our competitor has. To install Market Samurai, go to Speed realtor Toolbar => Traffic => SEO => Best Keyword Research Software Next, fill in your name and to register for a free copy of Market Samurai. After you ve filled in and click on the Yes! Send me my free stuff button, you will be directed to this following page. Follow the instructions and click on Adobe AIR to install, follow by clicking on latest version of Market Samurai to install the Market Samurai software. Once the download is complete, install the Market Samurai Tool. 21

22 Once Market Samurai is installed, run the programme and fill in your registration details. The registration key can be found in your . After you ve enter in your and registration key, check the box beside I have read and accepted the End User Licence Agreement and click on Begin and you will see the following screen. Click on New project 22

23 On the next page, enter in the keyword that you want to rank for, select Singapore as the country and territories and click on Create Next, click on SEO Competition to let the software analyze your competition for your keyword. 23

24 Once the software is done analyzing, you will see a similar table as the following picture: This is the result for the top 10 webpage that are ranking for the keyword that you are targeting on Google. From this results, we can determine how difficult it is to rank for a keyword. The red cells you see in the table indicates that the keyword is very competitive. And if the keyword is very competitive, we might have to put in more effort to do the off page SEO. In order over take your competitor in the search engine, we will likely need to get more backlinks than them. To check the amount of backlinks our competitor has, we will go back to Market Samurai. Under the BLP column, you can see the number of backlinks your competitor has. 24

25 Although the amount of backlinks we have contribute to our SEO, it will affect your search engine ranking, it is not the only factor. Factors such as your domain name, your on page SEO are important as well. Next, click on the triangle beside the 1st result on the table. For my keyword, I ll click on which is the first result on the table and then click on Anchor text analysis 25

26 Market Samurai will pull the data of the backlinks that your competitor has acquired. When you click on the URL, it will open the page in your internet browser. You might realise that not all the websites that our competitor is getting backlinks from will allow you to do the same. For example, one of my competitor is getting a backlink from the following website for the keyword Singapore Properties. 26

27 When I click on the word Singapore Properties, it will bring me to my competitor s website which he/she is trying to rank for the keyword Singapore Properties. This is a backlink that my competitor has acquired. To Google and a few other search engines, this backlink counts as a vote of credibility for his/her website, for the keyword Singapore Properties. This particular page that my competitor is getting a backlink from is actually a profile page. Now not necessary all the website that your competitor is getting the backlinks from is a profile page. It could also be a blog, an article directory or from any other website. In order to get a backlink, we will try to copy how my competitor is getting a link from this page. And since this is a profile page, we will likely have to sign up for an account on this website to create a profile page, in order to create a backlink. 27

28 First, I ll sign up for an account so I could create a profile page and get a backlink just like my competitor. The following picture on the account sign up page. Under the description, the website allows us to insert a link. This is where my competitor has gotten a backlink and we will do the same to get a backlink from the same page. To create a backlink, I ll first type in the keyword that I would want to rank for in Google and then highlight the keyword. Then click on the small Insert/edit link icon. 28

29 Now I ll key in my website address into the Link URL and enter my keyword into the Title field. Once we are done, click on insert and this will transform the keyword into a clickable link. Take note that not all website will have the Edit/Insert Link button functions. In order to beat our competition, we will need to keep doing the backlinks consistently until we reach the spot on the search engine ranking that we desire. Besides getting lots of backlinks, it is important to make sure that the amount of backlinks that we get is consistent as well. Search engines are able to track not only the amount of backlinks we have, but also the velocity and speed of the backlinks we are getting. For example, if you do 100 backlinks today and stop tomorrow, Google will be able to detect that and might penalise your website. However, if you do 10 backlinks consistently over a period of time and afterwhich, you slowly decrease the number of backlinks over time, Google will not see it as unnatural, therefore we will not be penalized. 29
