NFSEN - Update 13th TF-CSIRT Meeting 23. September 2004 Malta Peter Haag 2004 SWITCH
NFSEN ( NetFlow Sensor ) 12th TF-CSIRT Meeting Hamburg: 2004 SWITCH 2
NFSEN A lot of positive feedback: Is this tool available? How do you track botnets? 2004 SWITCH 3
NFSEN Short Review: With NFSEN you can: Display the network traffic situation. Easily navigate through the netflow data. (time based) Profile/monitor specific Networks/Hosts and events. Extensively filtering netflow data. Analyse the netflow data using the web based as well as the command line based interface. Create Top N statistics. Post process the netflow data for reporting and alerting SWITCH 4
NFSEN - Web Interface 2004 SWITCH 5
NFSEN - Web Interface 2004 SWITCH 6
NFSEN - CLI output 2004 SWITCH 7
NFSEN Incident: 1. Customer calls - and reports a hacked system: 2. IRC connection found on hacked host. 3. Profile Command Master: 2004 SWITCH 8
NFSEN Host list: 2004 SWITCH 9
NFSEN Software: Summary: monitored:..... Web Front-end CLI Post Processing Input Backend tools: nfdump 2004 SWITCH 10
NFSEN nfdump Tools are available as Sourceforge Project. Run on *nix: Linux, Solaris ( 32/64 bit ), OpenBSD ( 32/64 bit ), FreeBSD, MacOSX. Comparable to tcpdump but for netflow data. Processes netflow v5 and v7. Efficient filter engine: > 4 Mio flows/s on 3GHz Intel. Fast Statistics ( Top N ) 2.5 s for 1.5Mio flows. Top N flows, packets, ( src/dst ) IP addresses Powerful pcap like filter syntax. ( tcp and dst net /16 and dst port > 1024 ) or ( src as Work in progress: Implementation of netflow v9 for IPv6 and 64bit counters. Web Frontend : Improved Interface will become public SWITCH 11

Internet Background Noise 13th TF-CSIRT Meeting 23. September 2004 Malta Peter Haag 2004 SWITCH
IBN What I am going to present: History of IBN. What is IBN? IBN in use. Implementation of IBN SWITCH 14
IBN - History Question: Why not make use of the unused IP address space? The Hunter Gatherer way of life: Instead of dropping unaddressable IP packets - collect and analyze the garbage SWITCH 15
IBN - Highlights Packets hitting the IBN sensor should have never arrived. IBN collects IPv4 packets ( TCP, UDP, ICMP ) packed in 5 minutes slices, conserved in 24 h boxes and archived for later use. What we see: More or less aggressive scanning activities. Misconfigurations of servers. Start of new worms. Backscatter packets from a DDoS. What we do: Provide Early Warning support for our customers. Notify our customers of infected systems. Local Internet weather map. Correlation with other sources e.g. isc.sans.org, dshield.org Web based and CLI interfaces. Public view: Top 10 SRC/DST IP addresses as well as top 10 SRC/DST ports. Visualization as scan matrix SWITCH 16
IBN Web based interface - graphical view: 2004 SWITCH 17
IBN Web based interface - numerical view: 2004 SWITCH 18
IBN 2004 SWITCH 19
IBN 2004 SWITCH 20
IBN History graphs: 2004 SWITCH 21
IBN Matrixplots: IP address: y.x Filter: port 445 y 256 x 2004 SWITCH 22
IBN Matrix Plots: TCP and port 5000 TCP and port SWITCH 23
IBN Matrix Plots: TCP and port SWITCH 24
IBN Implementation: The entire SWITCH address space points to the IBN sensor with a very low metric. IBN Web IP packets Post processed AS559 addr space.. Reporting Summary: monitored:..... Alerting From: cert@switch.ch To: security@ Subject: most likely compromised system Dear Security Team,... please check & act accordingly to your own policy SWITCH 25
IBN - Design and Implementation Summary: monitored:..... Web Front-end CLI Post Processing Input Backend 2004 SWITCH 26
IBN Figures: SUN E220R 1GB RAM OpenBSD 12GB data space. 100MB Ethernet. ~ 3 x /17 IP address space ~= addresses. ( less used IP space ) ~ 300 kb/s input. ~ GB data/day. ( snaplen 68 bytes ) Data archive on another host 120GB ~ 1 year SWITCH 27
IBN Next steps: Port History. Add bogon IP address space ( RFC 1918 ) to IBN sensor. Profiling specific ports/ip addresses over time. Footprints from worms/malware for known scan patterns. More automatic pre-analyzing. Ideas for combining more sensor on a national level More detailed ( explained ) Internet weather map SWITCH 28
