2 What is the PA Research Support Scheme? A joint initiative funded by the PA Research Foundation (PARF) and the PAH Private Practice Trust Fund (PPTF). Administered through the Centres for Health Research. Aims: 1. Support PAH staff conducting high quality clinical and translational research that improves patient outcomes 2. Strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations between the PAH and its affiliated Universities

9 General Criteria 1. The CIA must (including postgraduate students): i. Be currently employed at least 0.5 FTE in the role that allows eligibility ii. Hold the appointment that allowed eligibility for the duration of the grant 2. The majority of the research must take place on the PAH campus (unless sufficient justification can be provided) 3. Projects funded by the ARC, NHMRC and their funding partners (including the Cancer Council(s), Heart Foundation, etc), or equivalent are not eligible

10 General Criteria 4. Applicants must provide details of at least two Reviewers that are: i. External to the PAH with at least one being interstate ii. Completely independent of the applicant and without conflict of interest A breach of these requirement may disadvantage the ranking of your proposal!!!! Applicants may apply for more than one category of support as long as the proposed research is different for each application

11 Postgraduate Scholarships A stipend for up to 3 yrs full-time (6 yrs part-time) study towards a Research Masters or PhD Stipend* Applicant Qualifications Amount Standard Honours graduates without medical, dental or allied health qualifications $36,000 pa** Nursing and Allied Health Qualified Nursing and Allied Health Professionals currently registered with their relevant Association $43,000 pa** Medical Qualified Medical and Dental practitioners $48,000 pa** * NHMRC benchmarked ** Includes $10,000 which must be used on project consumables Eligibility 1. The Student (CIA) should and Supervisor must: i. be a member of staff at the PAH (OR hold a formal appointment to the PAH) AND be engaged in clinical or health service delivery OR ii. be a staff member of a PAH affiliated University department (OR Research Institute based on the PAH campus) 2. The Student s principal supervisor must hold a joint appointment to UQ, QUT or Griffith University 3. The Student must begin their postgraduate studies within 3 months of award acceptance

12 Postgraduate Scholarships A stipend for up to 3 yrs full-time (6 yrs part-time) study towards a Research Masters or PhD The Student will be ineligible if they: i. are in the 3rd yr of a full-time PhD (or final year of a Masters degree) after 31 January 2014 OR ii. hold an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or Postgraduate Scholarship supported by the ARC, NHMRC and their funding bodies (including the Cancer Council(s), Heart Foundation, etc.), or equivalent

13 New Appointment Grant Assists a new clinical appointee to the PAH establish their PAH-based research program 2 yr funding $75,000 per annum Eligibility 1. The Chief Investigator (CIA) must be: i. a member of the staff of the PAH (OR hold a formal appointment to the PAH) AND ii. engaged in clinical or health service delivery 2. The application must be submitted within 18 months of the official starting date of employment at PAH

14 Fellowship in Clinical Research/SHO Assists advanced trainees/young specialists begin a research career 12 months funding $75,000 per annum Eligibility 1. The research must be conducted at the PA Hospital 2. The applicant must be: i. qualified and registered with the appropriate registration authority or association within Australia ii. Enrolled in an accredited advance training program in/within 12 months of completing vocational specialty training in Medicine Surgery Mental Health 3. The applicant s supervisor must be a specialist PAH staff member

15 Fellowship in Clinical Research/SHO Assists advanced trainees/young specialists begin a research career The applicant will be ineligible if they are awarded, or presently hold, a similar Fellowship from another funding agency To be advertised through Queensland Health website soon!!! (Watch this space)

16 Project Support Requires interdisciplinary collaboration (e.g. across medical, allied health, nursing and basic/clinical research) Research proposals must strengthen collaborative research within the PAH campus, and demonstrate the potential for the research to be translated into improved health outcomes Small Grants ($20,000 for 1 yr) Seed funding that will have the potential to build capacity and/or result in future NHMRC grants Project Grants ($75,000 for 1 yr) Stand alone support for defined projects ALH Breast Cancer Project Grants ($75,000 for 1 yr) Stand alone support for a defined breast cancer project Spirit Group Prostate Cancer Research Project Grant ($50,000 for 1 yr) Stand alone support for a defined prostate cancer project

23 Assessment Process Reviewer assessments are CONFIDENTIAL Recommendations for funding are: Made by the PA Research Committee on the basis of merit Approved by the PPTF and PARF Applications assessed according to: 1. Significance the ability of the proposed research to translate into improvements in human health 2. Scientific Quality the research proposal must be coherent with clearly presented objectives, and methods that address the stated hypothesis 3. Track Record assessed by the team s contribution to their field of research, the applicant s track record and the ability of the CIA to lead the research project Postgraduate Scholarships the Supervisor s track record is also considered 4. Originality and Innovation the ability of the proposed research to advance concepts 5. Collaborations (the Project Grant) the strength of the interdisciplinary team (i.e. strengthen of collaborative research at the PAH) 6. Budget* is it appropriate for the proposed research? * Not applicable for Postgraduate Scholarship applications

24 Assessment Process The first 5 criteria will be scored on a scale of 1-7 where: 1 - No evidence 4 - Good 7 - Outstanding by international standards (Significance, Scientific Quality, Track Record, Originality and Innovation, Collaborations) Advice: Use headings in the research proposal such as: Background Aims Hypothesis Methods Significance
