RESEARCH FROM THE SME S
HIPs Collaborative Assignments and Projects Collaborative learning combines two key goals: learning to work and solve problems in the company of others, and sharpening one s own understanding by listening seriously to the insights of others, especially those with different backgrounds and life experiences. First-Year Seminars and Experiences The highest-quality first-year experiences place a strong emphasis on critical inquiry, frequent writing, information literacy, collaborative learning, and other skills that develop students intellectual and practical competencies. Undergraduate Research Many colleges and universities are now providing research experiences for students in all disciplines.
Collaborative Learning Collaborative learning has been proven to increase sense of community among students, which in turn, has been closely linked to learner satisfaction and retention. Brindley, Walti, & Blaschke, 2009 Collaborative learning has also been found to play a significant role in the retention of first-year students. Laux, Luse, & Mennecke, 2016
Collaborative Learning The focus of learning is not limited solely to the knowledge of the instructor. Dewiyanti, Brand-Gruwel, Jochems, & Broers, 2007 Exposing students to collaborative learning helps develop important skills to guide them through their academic progression and prepares them for the global workplace, since many employers consider readiness to engage in productive teamwork a requirement for success. Barkley, Cross, & Major, 2005
Information Literacy Despite their easy access to information, most students enter into college with poor information literacy skills, as they frequently are unable to effectively use and critically assess information resources. By academically challenging and supporting students learning, college and universities help students develop skills in assessing, critiquing, and using information, skills essential for lifelong learning. Thus, it is imperative to improve students information literacy skills immediately upon college entry. Information literacy is a skill common to all disciplines and the first college year is unique in that it provides experiences common to all students designed to ease their transition into college. Fosnacht, 2015
Undergraduate Research The development of research and information literacy skills in first year students is essential, but challenging. Approaches to developing these skills that are embedded within subject design, and use a blended approach between online and face-to-face delivery are considered best practice in this area. Yager, Salisbury, & Kirkman, 2015
COLLABORATIVE SOFTWARE & THE CLOUD
Hat trick of online interaction Swan, 2004
Further defining collaborative software ICT tools support and improve learning by providing endless opportunities for both students and lecturers to communicate, share and engage in collaborative assignments Herrington, et al. 14 INTRODUCING COLLABORATE
Blackboard Collaborate Cloud based software supplied by the University System of Georgia (USG) Accessible via the statewide LMS (Desire to Learn Brightspace D2L)
Seeing is believing Collaborate in real-time Combine cooperative projects, research, information literacy and team-based projects into a single learning experience Active (and collaborative) learning Students control the process by sharing their problem(s). Students help other students. Students learn by teaching other students.

Results Let s see how we did..
Conclusion Collaborative technology can be used to create an environment in which students learn to work and solve problems together. Instructors can take on the role of passive observer while students assume the role of active teacher as they share their findings and insights with their peers. Cooperative projects, research, information literacy and team-based projects can all be combined into a single learning experience using cloud based collaboration software.
In short Cloud based technology can help you get your HIPs moving!
