3 The sun s radiation hits the surface (SRI) Solar Reflectance Index a measure of the surface s ability to reject solar heat Solar Reflective Color Pavers reflect the sun s heat keeping the surface cooler, reducing the heat island effect, demand for air conditioning and improving air quality. SRI Colors Available in all Paver Products! For more information about SRI Colors please contact your local Basalite Solar Reflectance solar energy that is reflected by the pavers Non SRI Color Surface dark concrete and ashphalt absorb the sun s heat, causing surface and ambient air temperatures to rise, increasing the smog-producing ozone Basalite SRI colors meet or surpass the LEED SRI threshold of 29 Turn Down the Heat with Solar Reflective Colors Hotter air in cities increases the smog-producing ozone, prolongs and intensifies heat waves, and increases demand for electricity to cool buildings, which, in turn, amplifies climate change through the burning of fossil fuels. Turning down the heat is relatively easy, with planning and changes that can be incorporated in new construction and redevelopment. Basalite SRI colors can contribute to LEED points under Credit Sustainable Sites "Heat Island Effect, Non-Roof". The requirements are met when materials stay relatively cooler in sunlight and are used on at least half of the site's non-roof impervious surfaces such as roads, sidewalks, courtyards, and parking lots. The material's solar reflectance index must be at least 29 on a scale from black (0) to white (100). Where paved surfaces are required, using SRI colors can help reduce the "Heat Island Effect, reducing the demand for air conditioning and improving air quality. Basalite offers eight colors that meet or surpass the LEED SRI threshold of 29, plus our line of permable pavement systems can also contribute to additional LEED points under Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency and Materials and Resources. All Basalite paver products are available in the SRI colors shown in this brochure. Although every attempt has been made to display realistic product photographs, color may vary due to the printing process. It is recommended that actual product samples be requested, as variations in colors and shades of color on all units, as well as aggregate exposure, are inherent in all integrally-colored concrete products. No claims will be allowed regarding variations in any of the products shown.
4 Solar Reflective Colors The Basalite SRI colors below meet or surpass the LEED SRI threshold of 29. Milan Milan (paver shown: San Francisco Cobblestone) Venice Pietro Pietro (paver shown: San Francisco Cobblestone) Florence NOTE: Not all colors shown in this brochure are considered stock paver colors. Please refer to the Basalite paver brochures or for available stock colors. Custom colors are available by special order, please allow sufficient lead time. For more information please contact your local Basalite Palermo Palermo (paver shown: San Francisco Cobblestone)
5 Eligible LEED Credits The U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is based upon points and evaluates the overall performance of a green building project by assessing each of the materials and systems used in combination. The number of points earned determines the level of LEED certification the project receives (Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum). The information below represents possible LEED credits where Basalite SRI colors and permeable pavement systems may contribute. Actual credits granted will vary by project and/or product manufacturer. For more information please contact your Basalite Sustainable Sites (SS) Credit 6.1 Stormwater Design: Quantity Control Stormwater management of a building site where the existing impervious area is greater than 50% and the runoff rate and quantity is reduced by at least 25%. Basalite permeable concrete paving stone systems can reduce runoff to zero for the most frequent storms. Credit 6.2 Stormwater Design: Quality Control A treatment system designed to remove 80% of the average annual post-development Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and 40% of the average annual post-development Total Phosphorous (TP). All water captured by the Basalite permeable concrete paving stone systems and infiltrated on-site is considered 100% treated. Credit 7.1 Heat Island Effect: Non-Roof Non-Roof landscape and exterior designs that reduce heat island effect would entail the use of light-colored / high albedo materials with a solar reflective index (SRI) of at least 29 for non-roof impervious surfaces, i.e., pavements. Manufacturing permeable concrete paving stones in light or natural colors that have an SRI of at least 29 or the use of Turfstone (grid pavement) will meet this requirement. Credit 7.2 Heat Island Effect: Roof Use ENERGY STAR compliant (highly reflective) AND high emissivity roofing (emissivity of at least 0.9 when tested in accordance with ASTM 408) for a minimum of 75% of the roof surface; OR install a "green" (vegetated) roof of at least 50% of the roof area. Combinations of high albedo and vegetated roof can be used providing they collectively cover 75% of the roof area. Materials and Resources (MR) Credit 2.1 and 2.2 Construction Site Waste Management 2.1 at 50% and 2.2 at 75% waste diversion from disposal. Crush and reuse existing concrete paving stones on-site or off-site as base material. Credit 4.1 and 4.2 Recycled Content 4.1 for 10% and 4.2 for 20%. 100% credit for post-consumer and 50% post-industrial (pre-consumer) recycled waste. Calculations are cost-based and can include materials such as flyash, slag cement or silica fume. Credit 5.1 and 5.2 Regional Materials 5.1 for 10% and 5.2 for 20% extracted, processed and manufactured regionally. Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site. Innovation and Design (ID) Credit 1.1 and 1.2 Structural Advantages and Life-Cycle Benefits Design teams and projects have the opportunity to be awarded for exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED for New Construction Green Building Rating System and/or innovative performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by this rating system. Water Efficiency (WE) Credit 1.1, 1.2, 2, 3.1, 3.2 Water efficient landscaping, innovative wastewater technology and water use reduction can all be accomplished in conjunction with the use of permeable concrete paving stones systems by capturing rainwater to be used later for irrigation or gray water use.
