Re: Report on Career Technical Education Program Plans The attached memo from Jim Coombs, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, provides summary information regarding the Claremont High School s Career Technical Education (CTE) program plans. Mr. Coombs will introduce the item and Drs. Brett O Connor, Principal, Claremont High School, and June Hilton, Assistant Principal, Claremont High School will provide a PowerPoint presentation. Attached is a copy of the PowerPoint report that Dr. O'Connor and Dr. Hilton will present. This item is for Board information and discussion and no action is necessary at this time.

Date: May 20, 2010 From: Jim Coombs Re: Report on Career Technical Education (CTE) Program Plans Background Claremont Unified School District educational staff has consistently worked throughout the past two years toward the development and implementation of Career Technical Education (CTE) and CTE Pathways. In light of the State budget and additional financial constraints the Claremont High School's instructional team has been working throughout this year to evaluate re-development and refine their College/Career Technical Education (CCTE) plan. The CCTE plan takes into consideration the program needs and desires of students, the availability of key instructional staff, as well as the available educational and financial resources. Many of these resources are available through our educational partnerships with Citrus College, Baldy View ROP, Fairplex CTEC, and Chaffey College. It is our goal to provide all students with an educational opportunity that is both a rigorous and relevant, and that once completed students have the maximum opportunity to the level of post-secondary education they wish to pursue. This presentation will provide background into the planning and implementation of four primary pathways that are currently under development and preparing for implementation in Fall Attached is a copy of the PowerPoint report that Dr. O'Connor and Dr. Hilton will present to the Board on May 20, Board Goals This item addresses Board Goal No. 1, Quality Teaching and Learning for the Whole Child. Claremont Youth Partnership Implications This meets the Youth Master Plan goal to provide expanded learning opportunities for all students. Fiscal Impacts All of these programs are self funded and do not impact the General Fund. Recommendation This is a report to the Board of Education and does not require any action at this time. 4 Current Status CHS currently has 10 courses articulated with Chaffey College for college credit. Team of six attended Career Technical Education Institute in March 2010 to discuss development of career pathways at CHS.

5 Career Pathways Part of WASC Action Plan Based on 15 industry sectors we are focusing on 2 Arts, Media, & Entertainment Engineering & Design These were selected based on current course offerings and student interest

6 Arts, Media, & Entertainment Two pathways in this sector are currently welldeveloped at CHS Media & Design Arts Pathway Performing Arts Pathway In addition to core content (English, Math, Science, & Social Science) & World Language courses, students choose classes that are articulated in a pathway.

9 Engineering & Design Two pathways in this sector have been identified at CHS Architectural and Structural Engineering Pathway: we identified this as one to develop next year Environmental and Natural Science Pathway: this pathway will be developed in two - three years. In addition to core content (English, Math, Science, & Social Science) & World Language courses, students choose classes that are articulated in a pathway.

12 Next Steps Develop articulation agreements with Citrus and Chaffey Colleges in the designated pathways using current course offerings. Work with CHS academic departments to align current courses and develop new courses that articulate with colleges. Work with counseling staff as they develop four-year plans with students to discuss and promote pathway options.
