1 Executive Summary Executive Summary In today s complex business environments, corporate executives must contend with an array of challenging and sometimes conflicting issues. Business managers are expected to offer secure application services, to support more customers, to create new and innovative products, and to enhance the company s responsiveness to rapid market changes. At the same time, managers are required to spend less on equipment and resources, reduce staff, and cut operating costs. IT managers, especially, are driven to lower both capital and operating expenditures, while increasing capacity for more application services and growing markets. To help meet these conflicting demands, managers must determine ways to reduce both the number and complexity of the systems in the corporate infrastructure, while, at the same time, increasing performance, capacity, and security. Many of these challenges can be addressed by effectively implementing high-speed networking, fast encryption, and innovative virtualization technologies available on Sun s chip multithreading (CMT) technology-based servers. Cost-effective virtualization running on Sun s CMT servers helps to create simplified and standardized IT environments, while improving the ability to deploy services and maximize system usage efficiencies. This white paper is intended to inform senior decision makers about the business benefits associated with virtualizing IT infrastructure using breakthrough CMT technology from Sun. The paper shows how businesses have reduced costs in some cases in excess of $4 million USD over five years. The paper also describes how virtualization can help organizations reduce the number of datacenter servers, reduce datacenter power and cooling costs, and achieve a rapid ROI on datacenter equipment purchases. Other key features of CMT technology-based servers described include: Sun is the only vendor to bundle virtualization technology, cryptographic acceleration, and the operating system (OS) at no extra cost. Sun offers the first server with built-in, no-cost virtualization technology with Sun Logical Domains (LDoms) and Solaris Containers with savings up to $10,500 per server. Sun is the first vendor to bundle integrated on-chip cryptographic acceleration and on-board 10 Gbit Ethernet for secure computing and high-speed networking. Sun offers the only mainstream processor and virtualization hypervisor for LDoms provided as open source under the GPL license. Sun SPARC Enterprise servers offer up to four times higher performance for as little as one-fifth the cost of competitive systems. Sun CMT-based servers have set more than 60 world record benchmarks.

2 Design Innovation with Sun s Open Network Systems Architecture Design Innovation with Sun s Open Network Systems Architecture Open Network Systems (ONS) is Sun s innovative platform architecture that helps businesses get better returns on their application investments. ONS is focused on converging open compute, open storage, open networking, and open source technologies into a secure, integrated solution helping companies realize multiple benefits, including: Millions of dollars saved in capital and operating expenses Dramatically improved application ROI Deploy enterprise infrastructure up to 75% faster than with traditional approaches Up to 6 times faster application performance Sun s ONS helps companies build and run business, Internet, and HPC applications with speed, simplicity, and savings. Calculate the Savings Consolidating the workloads from legacy systems onto Sun servers with CMT technology can deliver significant hardware savings, rapid ROI, and power and floor space reductions. For example, a datacenter that hosts eight legacy HP servers, including the HP Integrity Superdome, HP 9000 rp3440, and HP Integrity rx7620 server models can be consolidated and virtualized onto a single Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server to realize the following results: 1 Up to $4M in savings within five years on hardware costs alone Up to a 12% performance improvement 80% to 90% reduction in power and floor space requirements, substantially reducing environmental expenses An ROI of 1696% based on an initial investment of $226,892 USD (with an internal rate of return of 182%) The consolidation project pays for itself in 16 months Virtualization helps address the challenges At the core of Sun s ONS strategy is server virtualization. Virtualization is a combination of hardware and software technologies that essentially decouples users and applications from the specific characteristics of the systems they are running on. With virtualization, an IT manager can deploy two or more computers, running two or more completely different environments for example the Solaris 8 Operating System (OS) and the Solaris 10 OS on one piece of hardware. Virtualization technology better utilizes existing infrastructure to reduce space, power, and cooling requirements and helps reduce time to market for new services. This technology can assist in increasing service levels while delivering security that once required the isolation provided by individual servers. Developing the appropriate virtualization strategy for the business is an important decision, and Sun has the server portfolio along with the virtualization technologies to help executives make the right determination. Many business challenges are addressed by utilizing the virtualization capabilities provided by Sun s CMT technology-based servers including rackmount Sun SPARC Enterprise servers, and Sun Blade T6320 and T6340 server modules. Companies can consolidate operations onto fewer servers reducing server count by as much as 85% helping to minimize equipment costs as well as operating expenses. In addition, facility costs are lowered as a result of the reduced floor space, and power and cooling requirements can be lowered by up to 90%. 1 Data in this cost saving example is provided for informational purposes only and is not a Sun Microsystems proposal or guarantee of results. Data is calculated with a Sun tool that illustrates the potential ROI, TCO, and other financial results customers may achieve by implementing various IT solutions. The results shown are based upon application of assumptions to the particular data input. Actual results may vary depending on factors including the accuracy of the assumptions and the data.

3 Technology Leadership with Sun s CMT Software licensing and system administration costs also can be greatly reduced. As shown in the sidebar example, Sun estimates that IT departments can save more than $4 million USD over 5 years and achieve an ROI of 1696% with a 16 month payback when replacing HP servers with Sun CMT servers. Technology Leadership with Sun s CMT Using CMT technology, Sun put an entire system into a single chip for higher throughput, cooler running, and greater energy savings. The UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors, the industry s first systems on a chip, pack the most cores and threads of any general-purpose processor available. These processors contain up to eight processing cores with each core supporting up to eight simultaneous compute threads providing the highest compute density available with up to 256 threads per server and up to 6,144 threads per rack. In addition, servers powered by UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors (shown in Figure 1) are available for as little as one-fifth the cost of competitive systems, while delivering up to four times higher performance and up to four times higher performance per watt. Figure 1. Sun s CMT technology-based servers and blade modules offer industry leading performance while reducing operating costs

4 Technology Leadership with Sun s CMT ONS increases flexibility Based on Open Network Systems (ONS) design principles, the Sun Blade 6000 Modular System maximizes flexibility by supporting Sun Blade server modules powered by UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors with CMT technology, as well as AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon processors. With up to two UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors, the Sun Blade T6340 server module supports a total of 128 threads that can be used to maximize consolidation and virtualization opportunities. As a result, datacenters built around Sun s CMT-based servers offer better application performance while reducing electricity costs, lowering cooling expenses, and minimizing floor space usage. With the most open technology stack available, these servers offer some of the highest levels of application choice and investment protection in the industry. Sun servers with CMT technology support the Solaris 10 OS and provide full binary compatibility with earlier UltraSPARC systems, preserving investments while lowering development, testing, and deployment costs. No-cost Features Included in CMT Servers Sun provides a complete family of CMT-based servers in a range of rackmount and blade server configurations. With Sun servers based on CMT technology, there is no need to buy additional high-performance cryptography cards or high-speed networking interfaces. In addition to including virtualization technologies and the Solaris OS, Sun is the first vendor to bundle integrated on-chip cryptographic acceleration and on-board 10 Gigabit Ethernet for secure computing and high-speed networking. Applications requiring security can take advantage of the ten industrystandard, security ciphers embedded in each CMT-based processor. Sun s CMT servers are future-ready as more companies upgrade their corporate networks to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Sun is also the only mainstream vendor offering a virtualization hypervisor for LDoms as open-source software under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Virtualization Designed In From the Start Virtualization requires significant system resources to help keep performance levels where they need to be for today s enterprise applications. Unlike many conventional blade servers, Sun Blade 6000 server modules were designed with the datacenter in mind and feature powerful processors, large memory, and significant I/O throughput so essential for virtualization. Virtualization technology is integrated into Sun s CMT-based processors. Sun is the only vendor to bundle virtualization technologies (along with cryptographic acceleration, the OS, and high-speed I/O) at no additional cost. As a result, Sun servers with CMT technology are available at substantially lower prices than traditional x86 systems and other competitive servers. When used in conjunction with Sun LDoms and the Solaris Containers feature in the Solaris OS, Sun s CMTbased servers provide the flexibility and power of up to 128 virtual systems in a single physical system. The range of virtualization capabilities in Sun s family of CMT servers is shown in Table 1.

Virtualization is fundamental to Sun Blade Modular Systems from the design of the processor, to the architecture of the server modules, to the innovative chassis design. Sun Blade T6320 and T6340 server modules with UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors respectively take advantage of Sun s CMT technology to offer fine-grain control of processing resources. By supporting up to two UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors, the Sun Blade T6340 server module offers a total of 128 threads that can be used to maximize consolidation and virtualization opportunities. As a result, Sun Blade Modular Systems offer outstanding flexibility and expansion simplicity, and can help organizations realize significant cost savings. Some of the advantages of Sun Blade servers over competitive systems include: Exceptional consolidation capability (6:1 vs IBM), saving capital equipment costs Up to 6 times higher Web and Java application server performance with the Sun Blade T6340 Server Module compared to IBM JS22 P6 blades In addition, Sun s new Virtual NEM (Network Express Module) is an incredibly cost efficient way to connect multiple blade servers to networks and I/O. This new approach to I/O connectivity gives you virtualized 10 Gbit Ethernet I/O to the network and between Sun Blade modules in the chassis. The module reduces cabling by a factor of ten, eliminates management and interoperability problems, and comes with a distinct cost advantage over traditional blade switches.

6 Organizations Benefit with Sun s Virtualization World s First Servers with Built-in, No-cost Virtualization Technology There are hundreds of virtualization tools to choose from. Most of the tools are not designed for specific hardware and do not take full advantage of the hardware s features. Consequently, there can be substantial performance penalties from selecting the wrong virtualization tool for a given platform. For mission-critical, enterprise-level applications, however, the synergy created from the combination of Sun s CMT-based servers running purpose-built Solaris Containers and Sun LDoms provides a robust, secure, high-performance environment. Sun s advanced CMT-based hardware designs enable individual servers to be divided into separate, isolated domains. Domain isolation helps assure users that different applications do not interfere with each other. Sun LDoms exploit the thread-intensive model of the UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors, letting multiple instances of the Solaris OS to run concurrently on a single processor. Sun CMT-based servers offer the highest compute density available with up to 256 simultaneous compute threads per server and up to 128 domains per server. This virtualization of server instances helps IT managers effectively consolidate multiple physical servers onto a single system, thereby reducing footprint and lowering costs. Within domains, Solaris Containers provide virtualization inside a single Solaris OS instance. Solaris Containers isolate applications and services using flexible, softwaredefined boundaries so that multiple private execution environments can be created within an OS instance. With the ability to run literally hundreds of Solaris Containers in a single server, businesses can more quickly deploy new applications on easilydefined server instances, helping achieve faster time to market and shorter time to generating revenue. Since Sun LDoms and Solaris Containers virtualization technology is built-in at no additional cost, IT managers can save as much as $10,500 USD per server compared to competitive offerings such as IBM s proprietary virtualization technology. Sun also offers the most flexibility with the only mainstream processor and virtualization hypervisor offered as open source under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

7 Organizations Benefit with Sun s Virtualization Organizations Benefit with Sun s Virtualization Virtualization strategies are necessary for today s businesses that are cutting costs and improving business agility. From providing more efficient utilization of existing hardware to facilitating the creation of a low-cost disaster recovery solution, virtualization technologies can help save money in a variety of ways, including: Increasing server efficiency Lowering the number of software licenses Reducing datacenter footprint Reducing operational impact power and cooling Reducing maintenance costs Furthermore, CMT-based servers from Sun improve business agility by helping IT managers rapidly deploy new application instances to meet the needs of a changing market, while increasing ease of administration. Innovative features and unusual technologies are interesting, however, businesses only really value those features that impact application performance and cost and preferably both. Running Businesses on Sun CMT Servers Enterprise applications such as Oracle databases, Sybase databases, Oracle Siebel CRM, SAP ERP, Oracle Peoplesoft ERP, IBM WebSphere, and Symantec Security Management form the backbone of business operations. These demanding applications provide businesses with the essential functions of enterprise resource planning (ERP), supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), product lifecycle management (PLM), and business intelligence (BI). During challenging economic times, effective execution of these applications can help maintain customer loyalty and reduce IT costs, yielding the fastest ROI and growing the bottom line. Running these applications on inadequate hardware can lead to insufficient performance, unsustainable growth, inconvenient outages, and unhappy customers. By taking advantage of Sun servers with CMT technology, organizations acquire a solution that provides superior performance, scalability, and reliability. In addition to enterprise applications, the number of people taking advantage of Web services to interact, conduct business, research, and communicate is increasing dramatically. Companies need to build robust Web infrastructures that provide sufficient throughput and effective data protection. The growing numbers of systems deployed in the Web tier are increasingly costly to manage, and many organizations are running out of power and space in the datacenter. Not only do Sun CMT-based servers offer high application performance, low energy consumption, and minimal datacenter footprint, they are also available at significantly lower cost than competitive systems.

8 Organizations Benefit with Sun s Virtualization As shown in Table 2, the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server costs as little as onefifth the price of similar-class servers from HP and IBM, when essential virtualization software, 10 Gbit networking, and accelerated cryptography are considered. Table 2. Acquisition costs of Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server and competitive products Total Cost of Acquistion (T5440) 4 Processors, 64 GB Memory SPARC Enterprise T5440 Server HP rx6600 IBM p560 IBM p570 $74,393 $92,587 $81,683 $380,083 (32 cores, (8 cores, (8 cores, (8 cores, 1.4 GHz 1.6 GHz 3.5 GHz 4.7 GHz UltraSPARC Itanium) Power6) Power6) T2 Plus) Virtualization $0 $32,840 $0 $11,008 2 x 10 Gbit Ethernet $1,788 $9,990 $8,006 $10,598 Cryptographic Acceleration $0 3rd Party $9,000 $11,912 Totals $76,181 $135,417 $98,689 $413,601 More than five times lower cost than p570 Enterprise infrastructure with inadequate performance can slow the responsiveness of business applications and bring company productivity to a halt. Optimized for the highest throughput, Sun servers with CMT technology have set more than 60 world record benchmarks to date. The Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server, for example, provides up to four times higher performance, up to four times higher performance per watt, and costs as little as one-fifth the price of competitive servers. This makes the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server an excellent platform for virtualizing and consolidating traditional midrange applications as demonstrated by the following benchmark. The Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server, running the Solaris 10 OS and Oracle Database 10g holds the highest four-processor result on the SAP sales and distribution (SD) standard application benchmark 2 an industry-standard measure of enterprise resource planning (ERP) performance. This breakthrough score, shown in Table 3, exceeded the mark achieved by systems based on IBM Power6 and Intel Itanium2 processors and confirmed the claim that the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server (with four processors, 32 cores, and 256 threads) is the leading four-socket server running most ERP applications. In addition, Sun s server is the first quadprocessor system to exceed 37,000 SAPS the hardware-independent metric that describes the performance of a system configuration in the SAP environment all while maintaining the best rack unit (RU)-to-users ratio. 2 SAP and all SAP logos are trademarks or registered trademarks of SAP AG in Germany and in several other countries. Results of two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmarks as of October 10, 2008: SPARC Enterprise Model T5440 (4 processors, 32 cores, 256 threads, UltraSPARC T2 Plus, 1.4 GHz) running Solaris 10 OS, Oracle 10g, and the SAP ERP application Release 6.0 (2005): 7,520 SAP SD benchmark users, Cert#

9 Success Stories Table 3. SAP SD benchmark competitive comparison SAP SD Benchmark Results (T5440) SPARC Enterprise T5440 Server HP rx6600 IBM p560 IBM p570 Space (RU) Performance (Users) Users per RU (Higher is better) The benchmark is a two-tier test that represents full business workloads of order processing and invoice processing, while demonstrating the ability to run both application and database software on a single system. The benchmark simulates the critical tasks performed in real-world, ERP business environments. In the SAP benchmark, the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server supported 7,520 users, almost twice the number of users in half the space compared to the IBM p570 server equipped with four dual-core 4.7 GHz Power6 processors and running AIX 5.3 OS. The Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server delivered 7.5 times more users per rack unit, when compared to the HP rx6600 equipped with four dual-core Itanium2 processors and running the Windows Server Enterprise Edition 2003 OS. The Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server also supported 2.4 times more users per rack unit, when compared to the IBM p550 server equipped with four Power6 processors and running AIX 5.3 OS. These results show that the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server helps businesses support more users processing more ERP functions, faster. Additionally, this benchmark shows that the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server, with Oracle Database 10g running on the Solaris 10 OS, is well suited as an online transaction processing (OLTP) database server, providing dramatic levels of compute density. The result also highlights the vertical consolidation capability of the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server by running both the SAP application and Oracle database on the same physical system. Clearly, the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 is a powerful system that can help companies meet the challenges of today s demanding business environments.

10 Success Stories Success Stories International Fund Services (IFS), a State Street company, and the Capabilities Integration Environment (CIE) group of the United States Air Force have improved the overall efficiency and effectiveness of their IT operations while cutting expenses with the virtualization technologies in Sun CMT-based servers. The company also plans to deploy Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 servers. Virtualization through Sun LDoms and Solaris Containers helps IFS consolidate hundreds of physical servers, and the high performance of Sun s CMT technology offers IFS the computational capacity to scale with ongoing business growth. As a result, IFS decreased the average time for processing trades by one-third. In addition, IFS cut the total number of physical servers from 320 to 40 (a consolidation ratio of 8:1) and lowered IT power consumption by 30 kva. Military Accommodates Growth Using Sun Virtualization Solution The Capabilities Integration Environment (CIE) group is part of the 643 rd Electronics Systems Squadron at Maxwell-Gunter U.S. Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. As a managed service provider to the Unite States Air Force, the CIE group develops and tests software applications in various real-world environments prior to putting them into production. The CIE organization emulates multiple network configurations and server infrastructures to conduct proofs of concept and evaluations of software programs. In order to reduce costs and address future requirements, the CIE IT staff needed to optimize system utilization, build a scalable architecture, keep pace with growth, expand the customer base, and conserve datacenter floor space, power, and cooling. The CIE group consolidated servers using Sun CMT technology, Sun LDoms, and Solaris Containers, reducing rack space to achieve a 13:1 consolidation ratio. The IT staff also reclaimed nearly 50% of their datacenter floor space and cut
