Funding for the Musée provincial Félicien Rops is provided by the Province de Namur and the Communauté française de Belgique Wallonie-Bruxelles. A forum of specialists of the 19 th century and of art and engraving is held bi-annually to consult with the museum on the nature of its temporary exhibitions. 2
THE BUILDING The Musée provincial Félicien Rops is located 12 rue Fumal, in the heart of historic Namur, near the artist s birthplace and the baroque church, «Saint-Loup». The museum is housed in a former 18th and 19th centuries hotel, belonging to the parentsin-law of Félicien Rops from 1834 to The Museum, founded in 1964, continues to expend with the changing times. Current expansions include the annexing of an neighboring studio which also opens onto the garden. The design includes exhibition spaces covering approximately 180 m_ (90m_ a floor) and 12m_ of storage space, all with state-of-the-art centralized security, lighting and climate control. The opening will happen in November This studio is dedicated exclusively to temporary exhibitions. Recently restored and inaugurated in 1997, this wing also serves to welcome cultural events concerning the life and works of Félicien Rops, the graphic arts in general, and other pertinent facets of the 19 th century (see «A list of temporary exhibitions», p.7). Additionally, since 2001, a new wing of the museum, formerly 14 rue Fumal, is now built. We are actually preparing the opening of this wing : installation of the air-conditioning, new lighting (fibre optics) and modern exhibition showing for permanent collections. MUSEUM PLANS 1. Main building : reception, bookshop, main hall, library, stairs to the permanent collections of the gallery Musée provincial Félicien Rops. 2. Temporary exhibitions and classrooms : gallery, ground floor of the temporary exhibitions, stairwell, second floor of the temporary exhibitions, storage, and room for workshop. 3. The permanent exhibition rooms under construction 3
SECURITY SYSTEMS General summary All the security systems (burglar alarms, fire alarms, infrared systems, magnetic doors, security cameras) are directly connected to the control post that receives all informations and signals emitted by the various alarms and control systems. Fire and security alarms are powered by an uninterrupted electrical system. In the event of a power failure, the supply is guaranteed by an independant battery. The various functions can be activated and deactivated directly from the control post. Construction materials The temporary exhibition building was constructed at the beginning of the twentieth century and restored in The original structure, both interior and exterior, is composed entirely of bricks. The renovation of the building also included the structural reinforcement of the floor, which was replaced by reinforced concrete. The old roof was replaced by a new covering of slate which provides absolute insulation from the elements. Fire alarm The fire protection system complies with all current legal requirements. The materials used in the structure of the building itself are fire-resistant for 120 minutes. The fire detection system is based in an automatic central control post covering the whole building. Alarm devices used by the Museum include : - Manual alarm buttons throughout the entire building - Ionic smoke detectors - Heat sensors (for particularly sensitive zones where false alarms may occur). Materials used to extinguish fires : - Portable CO2 dry powder extinguishers, which are distributed throughout entire building. - 2 fire-hoses All this material is checked annually. 4
Anti-intrusion security system All the windows in the building are permanently sealed. The reception area also serves as a security checkpoint, monitoring the visitors of the museum. A security guard is controlling exhibition rooms. The entrance is equipped with an electronic anti-theft system, keyed to each work. In addition, two vertical detectors are placed at the exit of the Museum. Each work has been equipped with a concealed electromagnetic strip. This electromagnetic strip is keyed to the detectors which, when triggered, immediately activates the audio and visual components of the alarm. Infrared motion detectors are in operation throughout the building and are keyed to the alarm. The range of these detectors covers the entire volume of the building and all of the connecting hallways. Security cameras are placed in each room of the museum and checked by security checkpoint at the reception and the administrative staff. The system is tested monthly by our technician. 5
EXHIBITION MANAGEMENT The Musée provincial Félicien Rops has a team of employees and technicians who are specialized in the planning, reception, installation, maintenance, assembly and dismounting of exhibitions. CLIMATE CONTROL Humidity and temperature control In the temporary exhibition Galleries : Relative humidity : 55% Temperature : Fall/Winter : C Spring/Summer : C In the storage : Relative humidity : 55% Temperature : Fall/Winter : C Spring/Summer : C Climate control and regulation of temperature (RH,T) are separately determined for each gallery. Temperatures and humidity are recorded by hygro-thermograph. Moisture levels are monitored and recorded daily with the use of hygrometers. Permanent exhibition rooms are equipped with a complete temperature regulation system which carry out the heating, the cooling and the humidity control. Material from CARRIER. Temporary exhibition rooms are also equipped with a steam boiler DEFENSOR MK4 and a dehumidifier DEFENSOR EDENAIR VWD The conditioned air is carried out by material CARRIER. All the systems are checked monthly. Lighting levels in temporary exhibition rooms The lighting system consists of track lightning ERCO throughout each room. Adjustable and anti-uv halogen lighting is used for the protection of works of art. Light intensity can be easily regulated according to the nature of the materials on display (50 lux for works on paper) per international standards. Daylight is regulated by blinds. 6
