2 Welcome to TEFL in the College of Arts and Humanities at Swansea University. Our exciting and innovative teaching, research and creative/professional expertise enrich our Postgraduate Taught asters programmes. For information on the course and the structure of our programmes, please read this module information booklet. A DEGREE STRUCTURE Each programme is divided into two parts. Part One consists of 120 credits of core and optional modules. Full-time students study these over two semesters, part-time students over four. Part Two consists of the Dissertation worth 60 credits. It is undertaken following the successful completion of part one. Each programme contains compulsory and optional modules. Visit: for information on term dates. 4 SEESTER ONE ODULES ALE18 Vocabulary: teaching and learning (Compulsory) Taught: Semester 1 odule Co-ordinator: Professor JL ilton In this module we will explore the nature of vocabulary and the difficulties associated with defining and categorizing the "Word". We will examine and identify word components, and look at the ways in which larger language chunks- groups of words- sometimes behave like single vocabulary items. We will analyse what is meant by word knowledge and the various facets of this and in the light of this whether it is realistic to measure how many words a person knows. We will look at models of the L2 lexicon and use this as a basis for the investigation of the manner in which to teaching the reading, writing, listening and speaking of foreign language lexis. ALE20 Second Language Acquisition (Compulsory) Taught: Semester 1 odule Co-ordinator: Dr VE Rogers This modules examines some key topics in second language acquisition relevant to the L2 classroom. Topics include: Working memory and SLA Aptitude and individual differences Learning strategies Transfer effects 4 4

5 SEESTER ONE ODULES ALE25 Describing English (Compulsory) Taught: Semester 1 odule Co-ordinator: Dr CI Tschichold This module will equip students with the terminology and skills necessary to describe and analyse the structure of English at the word, clause, sentence and text levels. Attention will be given to both spoken and written language samples, and classes will include training in the application of linguistic description to text samples from different media ( spoken and written) and registers (formal and informal). ALE22 Communicative Language Teaching Taught: Semester 1 odule Co-ordinator: rs FH Hardy This module covers basic principles, philosophy and historical development of theory of learning and theory of language learning leading to the communicative approach to language teaching. It addresses the current debate about methods and methodologies in the context of English as an international language. 5

6 Undergraduate modules available to Visiting Students SEESTER TWO ODULES ALE21 Discourse Analysis for ELT odule Co-ordinator: DR. F Barbieri Discourse analysis is an interesting and important area of linguistics, and arguably an essential discipline for language teachers. Recent trend of communicative language teaching demands students to learn language in context, with purpose and meaning. Discourse analysis provides exactly the right concept and training for teachers to make language teaching more meaningful and situationbased. It teaches you how to analyse language beyond the word and sentence level, using various conversational principles and mental structures. hands-on practices are also included in this module, offering you adequate training in adopting spoken and written materials for teaching in an informed way. ALE24 World Englishes odule Co-ordinator: DR. RJ Penhallurick The module will cover the history and character of a selection of L1 and L2 varieties of English across the world ( including the British Isles); it will also consider emerging foreign language varieties, and the English based pidgins and creoles; it will look at attempts to model development of world Englishes, and it will consider some of the associated ideological issues. 6

7 Undergraduate modules available to Visiting Students SEESTER TWO ODULES ENA00 Classroom Teaching Practice odule Co-ordinator: rs FH Hardy Practical supervised and assessed English language teaching module open to teachers with qualifications below Cambridge TESOL or equivalent in which students apply, practice and critically appraise teaching methods and principles of A TEFL in actual classrooms. Required preparation for ENA01 Professional Reflective Practice. ENA03 Young Language Learners odule Co-ordinator: Dr G Donzelli Teaching ethod: Taught/Lecture Based This is a module about young language learners and the way children acquire a second language in instructional settings. From the study of theories of first and second language acquisition, students will move on to the analysis of the classroom environment and focus on issues such as classroom management, resources and materials for the low level young learner classroom. 7

8 SEESTER TWO ODULES ENA09 Language Testing and Assessment odule Co-ordinator: Dr H Daller This module will provide students with the necessary skills and tools to develop and administer language tests and assess learners' proficiency with quantitative and qualitative methods. Key terms in language testing, such as the reliability and the validity of language tests, will be explored. The relation between language testing and language teaching, e.g. the wash back effect of different language tests, will be investigated. ALE19 Research ethods for ELT odule Co-ordinator: Professor JL ilton & Dr Daller Teaching ethod: Taught/Lecture Based Required module for A TEFL candidates. An introduction to relevant principles and some techniques in language teaching research contexts. Assessed by a limited and guided research project. Theory underlying and practical guidelines for research in ELT contexts. Research ethics. Collecting and analysing data. Case study research. Surveys, questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential statistics Parametric and non-parametric tests of significance Correlations and regression analysis Designing, carrying out and reporting on a limited practical project in ELT, which could stand alone or be built on further for the dissertation. 8

9 SEESTER THREE ODULES ALE15 Dissertation Credits: 60 Taught: Semester 3 odule Co-ordinator: Professor JL ilton Students take this module as Part Two of the A in TEFL. They will undertake small scale research projects and write a dissertation explaining the background to the project, presenting the methodology and results and discussing the results linking them to other work in the field. Topic by close consultation and specific agreement with module co-ordinator, or designate. Indidualized TEFLrelated project by agreement before defined deadlines. Topics will normally be practically related to the aspects of TEFL practice that involve the candidate professionally. OR ENA01 Professional Reflective Practice Credits: 60 Taught: Semester 3 odule Co-ordinator: rs F H Hardy This module is a practical alternative for English language teachers with qualifications below Camb TESOL Diploma level or equivalents. Assessment is based on submission of an original Learner Profile, aterials file, and English language Test. 9
