1 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF MACCABI USA VOLUME 9 NUMBER 1 SPRING 2013 INSIDE THIS ISSUE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE 19TH WORLD MACCABIAH GAMES MACCABI USA MISSION PROGRAM MAKING A DIFFERENCE LEGENDS OF THE MACCABIAH 2013 RECENT AND UPCOMING EVENTS FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION VOLUNTEER PROFILE MEET OUR DONORS LEGENDS AND HEROES OF THE MACCABIAH 2012 NEWS GROWING UP IN SOUTH AFRICA, WHERE RUGBY IS AS REVERED AS AMERICAN FOOTBALL IS IN THE USA, Shawn Lipman fell in love with the sport at a young age. Rugby is imbedded into the culture and was mandatory in high school. Shawn was a First Team player and received full colors in high school which is awarded to only the best players. He earned a scholarship to Wits University where he played at the Under 20 level. While still at the university he was selected for the Transvaal Provincial Under 20s. Participating in Rugby was not common for many Jewish athletes in South Africa for various reasons, including discrimination and parental discouragement. So it was unusual when Shawn got to the University level that there were quite a few Jewish players on the team. They all knew about the Maccabi Movement and when they heard about Rugby becoming a full-fledged sport at the Maccabiah Games in 1985, they tried out for the team. Shawn was selected for the team and went on to represent South Africa and win the gold. Having grown up playing a sport that is traditionally not played by Jews and growing up in South Africa where the stereotype of Jews not being athletic was perpetuated, it became very important to me not only to prove myself as a Rugby player, but to also show the naysayers that not only could Jews play one of the most demanding sports in the world, but excel at it, Shawn said. After graduation from university at the end of 1985, Shawn emigrated from South Africa to the USA which has become his adopted country. He took his CPA exam and joined the Santa Monica Rugby Club where he was spotted and selected for the U.S. National Team in During this time, Jordan Weinstein 1985 Maccabiah USA Rugby Team tracked Shawn down to recruit him to play for the USA at the 1989 Maccabiah Games. Jordan was a master at going out and finding Jewish athletes on the national stage. He got me involved and I loved the idea of playing for the USA as a member of both the National and Maccabiah Teams, Shawn said. I was able to get many of my teammates from the Santa Monica team to try out for the Maccabiah and five of us made the Team. Since that time, Shawn has competed in an additional three Maccabiah Games and is the Head Coach for the upcoming 19th World Maccabiah Games in July. He was the Captain of the 1993 and 1997 teams and led the only USA Team to win the gold in In 2009, he came out of retirement to represent the USA at the 18th World Maccabiah Games, where they won the bronze medal. Shawn s Maccabiah accomplishments have included two gold medals (one for South Africa), one silver medal and two bronze medals. As an international, professional player, he was also the first Jew in the world to compete in the World Cup of Rugby in 1991, representing the USA. Shawn was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in (continued on page 2)

2 Ron Carner Let s get right to it: Why the Maccabiah Games? Why do we, at Maccabi USA - and Maccabi World Union - do what we do? Why do many hundreds of volunteers put so much effort into organizing over 8,500 participants to create the world s third largest international sports event? Why do we work so hard to raise and spend millions of dollars in order to bring all these athletes to Israel and do it again, every four years? Why do we invest so many resources to involve Jews from over 70 nations to participate and compete in 37 different sports? Why do we never question ourselves, knowing that the majority of people on this planet are prejudiced against us and do not wish us well? Actually, this is one of the main reasons. We never stop believing in our uniqueness and in the strength of our identity as Jews the very same points that outsiders might condemn us for. We want to prove to ourselves that we are bonded. We are committed to bring the younger generation into our fold so they, too, can share that connection to both our past and our future. And we wish to demonstrate to the world who we truly are honorable, proud and strong people. Rather than be cowed by a misperception of us, we put our best face forward so that the world can see what Jews are made of. Sports is our means to accomplish that. At a time when routine religious practices are becoming the focus of fewer Jews, as fastchanging realities lure our younger generation to spread its wings into fields never before known to humanity, we pull them back through sports. No other interest can physically bring together so many people as do sport competitions. Once physically with us, we take the opportunity to expose their hearts and minds to the great spirit of the Jewish people and the miracle of the State of Israel. We return to each athlete a piece of themselves he or she hadn t known was missing. When we put a Jewish youngster from Kansas together with others from Argentina, Latvia, Australia or any of the other 70 nations, he or she learns more about themselves and our people than any lecture can impart. The opportunity to compete against other Jews in soccer, swimming, basketball or track creates the backdrop for the sense of our people their similarities and their closeness across international boundaries. I have been associated with this brilliant concept and its organization for the past 27 years and I still get excited when I am told by athletes either recent participants or decades-ago alumni that the Maccabiah was one of the greatest experiences in my life or was a life-changing experience. Indeed, the Maccabiah Games are a life-altering event for the athletes, supporters and volunteers. It is a transformative experience that gives the participants a new perspective of themselves--as athletes, as Americans and as Jews. While it reinforces the centrality of Israel to Jewish security and pride, it is also an emotional journey in which many lifelong friendships are formed. What starts as a fun-filled competitive sports event turns into a journey of discovery, friendship, Jewish awareness and pride. Athletes who just happen to be Jewish, return home as proud Jewish athletes. This year in Jerusalem! sportscene Spring president s message Ron Carner, President, Maccabi USA Shawn Lipman (continued from front page) Shawn described the impact the Maccabiah has had on him as learning lifelong leadership skills and building enduring friendships. The lessons he learned as a leader were tremendous. As Captain of the 1993 and 1997 teams, there was so much Shawn learned about himself and people management. It has left a permanent mark on his life as to what it takes to be an effective leader, and he has taken those experiences and learning into his business career and as a coach. And of course, there are the friendships. Playing Rugby has defined me as a person. All my lessons of life have been defined by my sport. The lifelong friendships that the sport has given me transcend any specific accolade or accomplishment on the field, Shawn stated. At the end of our sporting careers all we have are the memories, but more importantly, the relationships that continue well past our playing years. These are the true trophies. Jeff Simon, 19th Maccabiah USA Rugby Chairman, recruited Shawn to coach the 2013 Rugby team because of Shawn s demonstrated leadership abilities both on and off the field. As his coach in 1997, Jeff saw Shawn s ability to connect with the team and lead them to victory. When Jeff asked me to coach the team, I told him I needed to do it in a very specific way to create an elite, professional team, and Jeff has given me the autonomy to build the program the way it needs to be built, Shawn said. We want to leverage this team-building experience we have created with the elite level training and fitness regimen and build a foundation we can move forward for all future Maccabiah Rugby Teams. The 1997 gold medal team was very special, the competition was very tough and everyone connected and has remained lifelong friends to this day. It was a journey not just of winning and is a big part of why Shawn is coming back to coach this year. He wants to give back and bring the USA Maccabiah Rugby team to an elite level so they can have one of the greatest experiences of their lives. Shawn is thrilled to have the opportunity to share his background, knowledge and skills with the next generation of USA Maccabiah athletes. Shawn currently lives in Southern California with his wife Karen and their three children, Scott 16, Jamie 14 and Lindsay 12. He is an owner in an Investment Group, and still loves to play Rugby on the beach.

3 19th World Maccabiah Jeff Bukantz, General Chair, 19th Maccabiah USA Organizing Committee It is with great pleasure that I share with you my excitement and pride for the upcoming Games and Team USA! I have been involved with Maccabi USA for over 30 years as an athlete and volunteer, and my father Daniel (z l) was an athlete in 1950, so to say that Maccabi USA and the World Maccabiah Games are in my blood is an understatement. This summer we will be bringing a USA Team that is members strong and another 300 supporters to Israel at a time when Jews from around the Diaspora and the State of Israel are facing ominous and existential challenges. In the face of anti-semitism and the continual fight that Israel faces regarding its very existence, it is that much more important that we are bringing such a large delegation to Israel to join over 8,000 other Jewish athletes from throughout the Diaspora to show our unity and Jewish Pride to the rest of the world and ourselves. The USA and other countries have been traveling to Israel to participate in the Maccabiah Games for the past 80 years because it is one of the most joyous celebrations of Jewish People, Culture and Heritage in the world. At this year s Games there will be delegations from Cuba, El Salvador, Curaçao, Honduras, Mongolia and Bolivia, countries with Jewish communities that many people were unaware existed. Their presence at the Games makes us all stronger Maccabi USA Mission Program EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF THE MACCABIAH! All packages include the spectacular and breathtaking Opening Ceremony at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem. This is a unique opportunity to see over 8,000+ Jewish athletes from over 70 countries parading onto the field, proudly carrying the flags of their countries and singing Hatikvah in one common language, Hebrew. One of the most compelling reasons we can provide you with to sign up for the Maccabi USA Mission Program and more unified as a People. For many, this will be their first visit to Israel. Regardless of whether it is your first trip or your second or tenth, everyone who visits Israel feels as though they are home. The Maccabiah Games provide an opportunity for everyone to develop lifelong friendships, cherished memories and to leave as positive Ambassadors for Israel. 4 SPRING 2013 UPDATE MAKING A DIFFERENCE The finish line is in sight. The teams are preparing, and our leadership is focused on the many aspects of sending Team USA to Israel. Our Maccabi USA staff in Philadelphia is hard at work in conjunction with our volunteer corps across the country, pulling all the details together so that our 1,200 Team members, supported by 300 people on our Mission, all have an incredible, memorable experience as they have since 1932, and the first Maccabiah. A key part of our job is to help generate much-needed revenue so all our hard work pays off. Our leadership is working toward our four-year campaign goal of $6 million. This consists of $3 million towards our subsidy and scholarship program for Team USA, and $3 million for our endowments so that we can ensure our future in perpetuity. At this juncture, with the hard work of our leadership, we have raised $2.5 million towards our subsidy/scholarship program and $2 million for our Endowment program for a total of $4.5 million. I am pleased to share with you that Maccabi USA has received its largest gift ever, from Stuart Weitzman and the Weitzman Family Foundation - One Million Dollars, the bulk of which will go toward our Endowment Program so that athlete scholarships to the Maccabiah can be ensured in perpetuity. Stuart stated that his participation in the Maccabiah Games in 2009 was the greatest experience of my life. After experiencing the Games myself I saw how Maccabi USA changes the lives of our athletes by enhancing their connection to their Jewish culture and heritage. I knew that I had to support the work they do so future Jewish athletes can participate in this life-changing event and feel a strong connection to the State of Israel. It is my hope that this gift spurs other individuals and foundations to support Maccabi USA and the important work they do with similar gifts. Ron Carner, President of Maccabi USA, stated, Stuart is a good friend to Maccabi USA and he understands the importance of what we do, Building Jewish Pride through Sports, because he has experienced it firsthand. He is a dynamic human being who cares very much about the future of the Jewish community. He is a terrific Table Tennis athlete too! The clock is ticking toward July 18th and the Opening Ceremony of the Maccabiah Games in Jerusalem. Help us to get there it will make a huge difference. We are not all the way home, and we need your help. Contact Jed Margolis at jmargolis@maccabiusa.com or 215/ x 121. 6 DOR L DOR FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION Since the first Maccabiah Games in 1932, there have been many generations within the same families that have shared the Magic of the Maccabiah. Over the last 80 years they have participated together some even on the same team and have participated at different Games and represented different countries as their families have moved. At Maccabi USA, there have been multiple multi-generational families that have participated in the Maccabiah Games as well as other, international Maccabi Games. As the vast majority of athletes who have represented their country at this elite event will tell you, they become a family and develop deep and lasting friendships with their teammates and their competitors, Jewish athletes from Israel and throughout the world. To have that experience is life-changing on its own, to share that experience with members of one s family is something that athletes of multi-generation Maccabiah families have that ultimately makes, and keeps, them closer. life. Before I went to Israel I was just another Jewish kid, but after I played in the Games and experienced Israel, I became a very proud Jew. This is what I want kids to experience. Stacey already has, but I am so excited that we both will be able to share that with Scott this year. I want him to have the life-changing experience that we have had. Stacey Adams: The highlight of my (2009) Maccabiah experience was being on the Open Golf Team with my mom. Climbing Masada, swimming in the Dead Sea and visiting the Wailing Wall with my mom was both an emotional and gratifying experience. It was a life-changing event for me and it made me incredibly proud to be Jewish and it also provided me with a closer connection to my mom because we were able to experience these things together. This year, the fact that I can share this experience with my mom and brother is exciting, and I can t wait to march into the Opening Ceremony with them! Scott Adams: I was incredibly happy when I learned that I had qualified for the United States Maccabiah Team and overjoyed that I get the opportunity to go to Israel and represent my country. My mom has been talking about what a great experience the Maccabiah is for so long, and I am looking forward to sharing this fantastic experience with her and my sister. I was raised in a very competitive household and believe that if you are going to do something, you should do it to the best of your ability, so I plan to represent my country to the best of my ability. This will be Scott s first Maccabiah experience, Stacey s second and Debbie s fourth. Debbie first heard of the Games when she was in high school in Philadelphia, through her mom. She applied and qualified for the 1989 Open Golf team and the entire Maccabiah experience got her hooked. Debbie has always regaled her family with stories of the Opening Ceremony, meeting other talented Jewish athletes from around the world, and of course, the competition. She felt that by the time she and Stacey left for the 2009 Games, that Stacey was tired of hearing all these stories and thought they were exaggerated. Debbie was thrilled that once Stacey experienced the things she had been telling her about all her life, Stacey was as impressed and moved by her Maccabiah experience as her mother. Debbie Adams: To be able to represent my country and be with Jewish athletes from around the world was amazing it was one of the best experiences of my sportscene Spring & 81 Maccabiah; 19th Maccabiah Masters Men s Basketball Team TODD SCHAYES 1993, 97, 2001 & 05 Maccabiah; 1995 & 99 Pan Am MICKEY FERRI 2005 Maccabiah ABI GOETTSCH 2001 & 05 Maccabiah; 2003 & 07 Pan Am CARLA GOETTSCH 2001 & 05 Maccabiah; 2003 Pan Am RACHEL GOETTSCH 2001 & 05 Maccabiah; 1999 & 2003 Pan Am Dolph Schayes is one of the greatest Basketball Legends in NBA history and he coached the USA Open Men s Basketball team at the Maccabiah Games in He had the pleasure of watching three generations of his family participate in the Maccabiah Games. Dolph coached his son Danny at the 1977 Games and watched his nephew Todd compete and coach at more recent Games. However, one of his greatest joys has been watching four of his grandchildren participate in the Maccabiah Games. Both Dolph and Danny had such profound and meaningful experiences when they participated in the Games, it was a catalyst for future generations of their family to get involved. Danny will be returning to the Games this summer as a coach of the Masters Men s Basketball team. Todd has participated in the Maccabiah Games as both an athlete and coach, also in Basketball. The Schayes family s participation in the Maccabiah Games has doubled with each generation. Dolph has had four grandchildren participate in the Games. Three granddaughters, Abi, Carla and Rachel Goettsch have all competed as members of the Open Women s Volleyball Team and one grandson, Mickey Ferri, competed in Track & Field. All members of the family have had extraordinary Maccabiah experiences and it is just a matter of time before the fourth generation of Schayes athletes participates in a future Maccabiah Games.

7 Dolph Schayes: I have received many awards and honors in my life but the greatest thrill I ever had in sports was participating in the Maccabiah Games as Coach for the Men s Basketball team in The excitement of marching into the Opening Ceremony with the U.S. Team in front of tens of thousands of people still sends chills down my spine. I have attended seven Maccabiah Games as a supporter since then, many of them to watch members of my family compete, and I always get that same, incredible feeling at the Opening Ceremony when the USA marches in and everyone sings Hatikvah. It is an experience that I recommend for every qualified Jewish athlete. I look forward to going to Israel this summer and cheering on Danny s team. Danny Schayes: My first time playing in the Games in Israel as a high school athlete was a life-altering experience. My dad was the coach of the Men s Basketball team and not only did we win the gold medal, but I got to experience Israel and really connect with my Jewish Identity. Three generations of my family have participated and other brothers and sisters have attended as spectators, which has been extremely satisfying for all of us. My Maccabiah experiences made my connection to Jewish life real, and I hope that in four years, when my son is old enough to participate, I will be able to share this experience with him. Mickey Ferri: I tried out for the Maccabiah Games because of the opportunities they offered the chance to compete at a very high level against other Jewish athletes; visit the historic sites in Israel and learn more about my Jewish heritage; and to make friends with Jewish athletes from around the world. The excitement of the Opening Ceremony was tremendous, particularly seeing Jews from so many countries including India and China. I had the opportunity to watch my three cousins compete in Volleyball and was proud beyond words to sit with my mom and grandfather as we watched them play against Brazil in the final match. Abi Goettsch: I tried out for the [2001] Maccabiah Games when I was 16 because my sister had had such a great time in Mexico City at the Pan Am Games and I know it meant a lot for my grandfather to see his granddaughters play together. My most memorable experience was having the opportunity to tour Israel and visit sites like the Dead Sea and the Old City in Jerusalem, it was like living off the pages of a history book. Of course having my sisters with me at this time is something I will always be thankful for. I always talk about the friendships I have made and the experiences I have had, they have changed my life and made me who I am today. Rachel Goettsch: I learned about the Games from my grandfather and first participated with Maccabi USA as a member of the Volleyball team competing at the Pan Am Maccabi Games in Mexico City. That experience propelled me to qualify for future Maccabiah and Pan Am Maccabi Games. Of the many memorable experiences I have had, is the first time I visited Jerusalem, just being there and seeing the Old City is an experience that is hard to describe. The amazing people I met and the experiences I had were priceless. If it weren t for my grandfather I wouldn t have gone, and I am so thankful to him for this opportunity. Knowing that he, my uncles Dan and Todd, all participated in the Games before me made me feel like I really belonged. It was special, like I was continuing a legacy. Beginning with Ruth and Nachum Koltun, Israeli pioneers who were involved with the establishment of Israel as a country, both ran Track & Field at the first Maccabiah Games in 1932, representing Eretz Yisrael. Ruth and Nachum s oldest daughter, Anita, was discovered at the age of four in a pool in their local community, where her uncle would take her to swim and cool off during the hot summer. The lifeguard recognized how fast she swam and started to train her. Anita was then picked up by another trainer and later qualified to compete in the Maccabiah Games in 1953, representing Israel. Anita came to the USA as a teenager and met her husband in the pool at the 92nd Street Y. She had two children who both participated in sports and her daughter Jennifer became an accomplished athlete in both Swimming and Tennis. Jennifer married Gregg Goldberg and it was because of his interest in the Maccabiah Games that they both competed, she in Swimming and Gregg in Tennis. Jennifer and Gregg have four very talented sons who all compete in Tennis. Their two oldest, Ari and David, both competed as members of the Juniors Boys Tennis team at the 1999 Pan Am Maccabi Games, along with their dad who was also involved with Maccabi USA as a volunteer and member of the Board of Directors. Now their youngest son, Yale, who is ranked in the top-10 by the USTA in his age bracket, will compete in Israel this summer. Anita Deutsch: Everything is luck and I have been very lucky. I am lucky for the opportunities I have had, from being discovered at a young age, training competitively and competing in the Maccabiah Games. Coming to the USA afforded me a great life, family and opportunities. I am so proud of Yale, he is ranked number one in doubles and number five in singles by the USTA in his age bracket and I do hope to go to Israel this summer and watch him compete. Jennifer Deutsch: I heard about the Games while growing up and have a rich history of my family participating since the first Games and thought it would be such a great experience for our family to compete in an event with all Jewish athletes. When Gregg qualified for the Tennis team in 1997, I told him I wasn t going to Israel to watch him compete, but would compete with him and qualified for the Swim team. It is such an amazing experience; we have made lifelong friendships and I am so thrilled that Yale will have the opportunity to compete in the Games. I think that Yale s participation will create a greater connection to Judaism for him. He is very excited about the competition and his participation will provide him a better sense of his heritage and religion. Gregg and I plan on cheering him on in Israel along with all his brothers. Gregg Goldberg: The Maccabiah Games had a large impact on my life. I got involved as my athletic career was winding down and it was the perfect capstone for me. Being a member of the USA Team along with my wife was very special and a great way to meld athletics, socialization and religion. The connection and bonds to the people on our team were quicker and deeper than most other relationships because we had similar backgrounds. The experience changed my life and gave me a different, positive perspective. This year s Games will be a great opportunity for Yale to play tennis for the love of the game and enjoy the religious and cultural experience of being in Israel. Our son Mark plans to try out for the 2015 Pan Am Maccabi Games. I feel very fortunate that our family can participate in the Games, and I do believe it makes us closer. sportscene Spring

Their dear friend, Frank Velie 1993 and 1997 Maccabiah announced to them that he was competing in the Masters Triathlon at the 93 Maccabiah Games. They told Frank that if he made the Team, they would go to Israel to cheer him on. Susan and Harvey went as spectators in 1993 and fell in love with what Maccabi USA does and decided to get involved. In 1997, Harvey and Frank raised over $75,000 to take the Open Triathlon Team to Israel and Susan co-chaired the Masters Mission with Frank s wife, Sunny, which had over 200 people in attendance. When asked why they have stayed involved as supporters and volunteers for Maccabi USA, both Susan and Harvey responded that it s a fun thing to do. It supports the continuity of Jewish Life which is very important to them. They have been very lucky in that their children have stayed Jewish and continue to raise their own children as Jewish, and wanted to help make staying Jewish a reality for all Jewish kids. They can t think of a better way to do it than through sports and supporting the mission of Maccabi USA. Maccabi USA provides enrichment of Jewish Life and a connection for kids to Israel and their Jewish Heritage, the Morgans explained. We both come from families that are very active in the Jewish Community which was a big influence on our lives. Maccabi USA is a fun, proactive and direct way to be involved with making a difference in building the Jewish Community and helping to provide Jewish Continuity. sportscene Spring
