Major Myths If you re applying for college but haven t decided upon a major, then you re like most students who will make up the next freshman class! Did you know that n Not everyone knows what to major in 75% of students who enter college with a declared major will change their mind at least once. n Not all careers require specific majors In most cases, there is not one specific major required to enter a career field. Ryan Kibel 13, Hospitality Management For Ryan, it s all about hospitality. That s why he chose a school that practices what it teaches making students feel welcome, introducing them to opportunities, and helping them navigate both college life and careers. I chose Pace for its location. It s a small community within the big city, so it was not incredibly overwhelming. One thing I love about the hospitality department is that it is really small so students try to help each other out. The professors at Pace also have many years of experience in the field and many connections. Through these connections, I was able to get a job at a hotel in Midtown! Julie Gill 12, Computer Science Julie was looking for a school that was large enough for her to spread her wings, but still small enough to feel like home. I was looking for a college where I wouldn t get lost in the masses where I would know my professors, know my classmates, and have a memorable experience. I wanted a college where I would be able to take courses outside of my major and explore various interests. I wanted a school where I could have jobs and internships during my education and have a chance to test out life in the real world before graduating. I felt instantly at home and knew that Pace was the place for me. Hatsue Masuyama 14, Childhood Education and English Inspired to become a teacher after using therapeutic horseback riding to work with people with disabilities, Hatsue was looking for a school that would help her improve herself and the world. Teaching is a way I can live my life fulfilled by living for the sake of others. Pace allows education majors to have fieldwork experience earlier than many other universities, and it is also one of a few schools that uses the Avatar TeachLivE Lab where education majors can practice their classroom skills in a realistic simulation. Andrew Dalessio 14, Nursing For Andrew, it was the hands-on experience that made the difference. After completing gerontological rotations at Bethel Health Care and Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, he s on to medical surgical and maternity clinicals, and one step closer to saving lives as an emergency room nurse. There is nothing like being able to apply what you ve learned in class to help patients. Even if all I can do is comfort a patient in a time of distress, my job as nurse is successful.
