1 3M xdsl Line Conditioners 3620 Instructions 1.0 General 1.1 Document Purpose This document provides general and installation information necessary to install the 3M xdsl Line Conditioner. 1.2 Description The xdsl line conditioner is an analog device that is designed to improve available bandwidth through noise filtering and intelligent signal line conditioning. The line conditioner system employs patented TripleStream technology and is packaged in a sealed 3M enclosure which can be installed aerial, polemount and underground environments. Reach Placement The 3M xdsl Line Conditioner is placed at an approximate mid-point between the DSLAM equipment and customer premises equipment, as determined per loop resistance. The line conditioner tunes its internal circuitry to compensate for distance, wire gauge and other plant variables, and conditions the DSL line to maximize rate and reach. See physical specifications in Table 1. Line powering requires a maximum of 6 ma at -48VDC above voice needs.
3 2.0 Outside Plant (OSP) Considerations 2.1 Line Powering Line power will require the normal POTS line power of -48 to -55 VDC. This assumes one cable pair carries both power and signal. 2.2 Express Powering Express power will require a separate power source of a -48 to -55 VDC from the CO or RT and also a separate cable pair to transport the power to the unit. Up to 5 units(pairs) can be powered with a single power pair. WARNING Be careful not to damage any buried cables or service wires while digging to prepare a hole/trench, to expose cables or while driving stakes. 3.0 Installation 3.1 Installing the Unit 1. Choose DSL circuit - Per Company practice, ensure that the circuit is DSL ready. Remove load coils, bridgetap and verify that the pair is fault free. 2. Determine loop-placement location. Place the 3M xdsl Line Conditioner as close as possible to the ideal placement location within the total CO/DSLAM-to-CPE loop, per local or company practice; also refer to the Product Placement chart or the 3M DSL LC Placement calculator. The Placement Calculator can be found at: calculator/calc3m/calculator.aspx. 3. Route cable tail. Route the cable tail toward the splice case, pedestal, or housing. Follow company practice for cable support, slack, and storage concerns or trenching requirements. 4. Determine mounting type. The 3M line conditioner can be mounted in underground, aerial or pole mount applications. Consult local company practices to determine the mounting or installation type and the required equipment. 5. Mount the unit. Gather all materials, follow all safety precautions and local codes, prepare the installation site, and mount the unit. 6. Determine, measure, and mark cable tail sheath opening point. Sheath preparation and the length of exposed cable wire for splicing will depend on the type of splice housing used when splicing the cable tail. Adequate cable stub wire should be made available according to the existing splice arrangement. Mark the cable sheath opening point on the cable tail stub after determining or establishing an adequate length of cable wire to match the existing splice. 7. Score, cut, and open cable sheath. Always follow safety precautions when working with cables and cable opening and cutting tools. Perform the cable sheath opening procedure, per local practices. 8. Bond cable tail. Perform cable bonding with a cable bond clamp at the cable tail sheath opening, then bond the cable at the clamp to an approved ground with a bond strap or wire, all per local company practice. 9. Ground the line conditioner s ground stud. Connect the ground stud on the unit to an approved earth ground, per local company practice. 10. Perform splicing. Open the splice case and perform splicing per local company practice. Refer to the line powered or express powered Color Code Chart on the next page as needed. 11. Test. Test or verify the connections for proper operation and make any needed corrections, changes or adjustments, per local company practice. Verify -48 VDC is on the blue wire of the unit.
4 GROUNDING WARNING Always follow local codes and company practices for performing proper cable and site bonding and grounding. Perform all bonding and grounding prior to any electrical and communications connections. 3.2 Splicing the Unit Use the charts below to determine the LC pairs to splice to your network wires Color Code for 5 Line LPTP Central Office Pair 1 Tip/Ring White/Blue Central Office Pair 2 Tip/Ring White/Orange Central Office Pair 3 Tip/Ring White/Green Central Office Pair 4 Tip/Ring White/Brown Central Office Pair 5 Tip/Ring White/Slate Customer Pair 1 Tip/Ring Red/Blue Customer Pair 2 Tip/Ring Red/Orange Customer Pair 3 Tip/Ring Red/Green Customer Pair 4 Tip/Ring Red/Brown Customer Pair 5 Tip/Ring Red/Slate Color Code for 5 Line EPTP or EPER Black/Blue Black/Orange Central Office Pair 1 Tip/Ring White/Blue Central Office Pair 2 Tip/Ring White/Orange Central Office Pair 3 Tip/Ring White/Green Central Office Pair 4 Tip/Ring White/Brown Central Office Pair 5 Tip/Ring White/Slate Customer Pair 1 Tip/Ring Red/Blue Customer Pair 2 Tip/Ring Red/Orange Customer Pair 3 Tip/Ring Red/Green Customer Pair 4 Tip/Ring Red/Brown Customer Pair 5 Tip/Ring Red/Slate Power Pair Tip/Ring Black/Blue Color Code for Single Line LPTP Black/Orange Central Office Pair Tip/Ring White-Blue/Blue Customer Pair Tip/Ring White-Orange/Orange Color Code for Single Line EPTP or EPER White-Green/Green Central Office Pair Tip/Ring White-Blue/Blue Customer Pair Tip/Ring White-Orange/Orange Power Pair Tip/Ring White-Green/Green
